PETALING JAYA: The Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE) has reminded the education ministry to ensure that all students have equal access if the ministry intends to implement the digital textbook system.
Noor Azimah applauds the idea of using digital textbooks, saying that physical textbooks are not the main references any more.

PAGE chairperson Noor Azimah Rahim applauded the idea of using digital textbooks, saying that physical textbooks are not the main references any more.

“Many teachers currently use notes and do not rely on textbooks for references as much as before. So, this initiative is a good idea.

“However, my concern is if all students would be able to access the internet,” she said, adding that good coverage was needed to access the digital textbooks from wherever they are.

She lamented how despite so much being spent on getting schools connected to the internet, many schools still don’t have “good access”.

“I suppose these logistics have to be fixed by the time the ministry starts to implement these digital textbooks.

“Otherwise, some children will benefit while others will not because of the logistics and any related internet infrastructure problem in their area.

“If some benefit and some do not, then the objective of the inclusiveness and equity to all will fall short,” Azimah said.

She also highlighted the possible shortage of devices as she believes that their number is still not enough at every school.

“While every student is given one physical textbook, that does not mean that each student will then get one device. Some would probably have to share.

“So, I hope that the ministry ensures that there is no child left behind. Make sure that all children across the board have access to the digital textbooks,” Azimah said.

Earlier this week, Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon said that trials are under way to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of using digital textbooks in schools.

“If the system works, we believe that it will solve the problem of heavy school bags, which has been raised repeatedly by parents.

“We are confident that digital textbooks will help students become more active in class, as opposed to traditional textbooks.”

Chong admitted the plan would be costly and time is needed for the ministry to evaluate its feasibility.

The digitalisation of school textbooks is being done in three phases, as per the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2025.

In 2014, the education ministry had introduced digital textbooks, that can be accessed online, as an alternative to the printed version in a bid to take the national education system to greater heights.

Idris Jusoh, who was second education minister then, said the digital textbook would have flippable pages of text and graphics. He said it would be implemented in all schools in stages, beginning from 2014.

Idris said in the first phase of its implementation (2013-2015), the ministry had uploaded 313 textbooks that could be accessed free of charge through the 1BestariNet portal, using the identity code provided to all teachers and students.

Another concern raised by Azimah was the durability of digital textbooks.

She recalled how electronic gadgets, such as netbooks and e-books were distributed before, but most of these devices broke down after a year.

“The problem is with the maintenance of these gadgets. At least, books can be recycled but gadgets cannot be recycled.

“So again, it is not just about issuing devices but also maintaining them as well. We can’t be replacing them every year as then it would become expensive.”

jgn jd cm satu sekolah lambat bayar bil tnb kalau akak suka sekolah xbayar bil tnb hari2 cuti

selama ni pun budak2 akses wikipedia, cetak info bagai sbg keje skola

watla projek openbukuteks ke apa,
biar penulis2  tulis sndiri keseluruhan buku teks itu,
dikawal selia oleh pihak berkaitan,
kerjasama secara terbuka/tanpa lesen/tanpa royalti,
yg mcm wikipedia buat tu amalan mulia

bila dh ada bukuteks online, leh aja akses pakai tepon/tab , yg cap ayam leh baca, atau buat gzip database offline, terus extract ke internal memory,
selesai masalah

satu lagi, aku ada penah jupe budak india sekolah penang, aktif translate beratus artikel eng-> malay utk budak2 melayu baca wikipedia bagai, betapa besarnya pahala beliau brbanding sstgh meleis speaking londong tapi haram terjemahkn 1 artikel ke bahasa ibunda sendiri.memalukan sungguh set2 gini.
