Tidak dapat dinafikan masyarakat dahulu kala mempunyai pengetahuan yg tinggi dlm bidang seni bina.  Contohnya, istana, candi2 diraja, rumah berhala, monumen, tembok, empangan dsb.

Mari kita menjamu mata dgn gambar2 senibina yg menarik ini.  Forumners dialu2kan utk menyumbang...

The famous St. Basil's Cathedral was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible and built on the edge of Red Square between 1555 and 1561. Legend has it that on completion of the church the Tsar ordered the architect, Postnik Yakovlev, to be blinded to prevent him from ever creating anything to rival its beauty again. (He did in fact go on to build another cathedral in Vladimir despite his ocular impediment!)

The cathedral was built to commemorate Ivan the Terrible's successful military campaign against the Tartar Mongols in 1552 in the besieged city of Kazan. Victory came on the feast day of the Intercession of the Virgin, so the Tsar chose to name his new church the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin on the Moat, after the moat that ran beside the Kremlin.

The church was given the nickname "St. Basil's" after the "holy fool" Basil the Blessed (1468-1552), who was hugely popular at that time with the Muscovites masses and even with Ivan the Terrible himself. St. Basil's was built on the site of the earlier Trinity Cathedral, which at one point gave its name to the neighboring square.

Barcelona Cathedral (La Seu)

The spot where the Barcelona Cathedral now stands originally held a Roman temple and a Moorish mosque.  The first church (1046 - 1058) was of Romanesque style commissioned by Ramon Berenguer I.  The church as it stands today is of Gothic style, built between 1298 - 1460.  
Interestingly enough, the front facade wasn't completed until 1889!  In 1882, Josep Oriol Mestres completed the facade while following the plans drew up by French Master Charles Galtes.

Sevilla Cathedral








A juxtaposition of the moorish and the gothic greets visitors at the entrance to Sevilla's cathedral.
Like many churches in southern Spain, this cathedral was built in the site of a mosque. The Catholics were cool with the mosque for 153 years, but once it started to crumble, they scraped most of it, and started over.








La Giralda, the belfry of the cathedral. Built in 1195, it was originally the minaret of the mosque. The lower two-thirds are the original Islamic design; the Catholics added the belfry on top much later.

Construction of the cathedral started in 1401, on top of fundaments of the 12th Century Moorish mosque. More than a hundred years later, it was finished. Later, in the 16th, 17th and 19th Centuries, more constructions were added. This explains the many baroque, neoclassical and renaissance details in the mainly gothic cathedral.

One way you can still see the cathedral has formerly been a mosque, is the Patio de las Naranjas. In Moorish times, people could wash their hands and feet before prayer, in the fountain that's located in the middle.

Background info -

The Coliseum (Coloseum, Colosseum), was built during the reign of Emperor Vespasiano c. 72 AD and dedicated in 80 AD by his son Titus. The popular name of Coliseumcame about because the immense oval stadium was situated next to a colossal statue of Nero. The original name of this ancient Roman sports arena, the largest arena of its kind, is The Amphitheatrum Flavium.

Over 160 ft high with eighty entrances, the Coliseum could hold upwards of 50,000 spectators. Public events such as gladiator fights, mock naval battles and wild animal hunts were held at the Coliseum. During the staged fights as many as 10,000 people were killed. Fighters were slaves, prisoners or volunteers. Spectators saw persecuted Christians killed by lions. After 404 AD gladiatorial battles were no longer held, but animals such as lions, elephants, snakes and panthers continued to be massacred in the name of sport until the 6th century.

Mock naval battles were arranged by removing the heavy wooden flooring and flooding the lower cells, which usually housed the animals and prisoners. As gladiator fights proved to be more popular, the naval battles were ultimately moved to another site, and the wooden floors made permanent.

During the middle ages, stones from the Coliseum were removed for new buildings.

The Meridian Gate as viewed from inside the Forbidden City. Built in 1420, it is 37.95 metres high and is the main gate of the Forbidden City. The bells and drums in the gate tower were sounded to accompany important ceremonies presided over by the emperor.



This is one of the watchtowers on the four corners of the wall surrounding the Forbidden City. Each watchtower is supported by nine beams and 18 Pillars and has three layers of eaves. There are 72 ridges on the roof with a gilded spire in the centre



This is the square between the Meridian Gate and the Gate of Supreme Harmony, just ahead. Guards of honor would line up in this square (the largest in the palace complex) before important ceremonies.



Hall of Supreme Harmony -
Built from south to north on an eight-metre-high marble foundation, the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Medium Harmony and the Hall of Protective Harmony form the Outer Court of the Forbidden City together with the Hall of Literary Glory on their east side and the Hall of Military Prowess on their west side.
The Hall of Supreme Harmony, also referred to as the throne, is 35 metres high, the highest of the halls in the Forbidden City. It was used for important ceremonies like the enthronement of the crown prince, the emperor's birthday celebrations, and the initiation of military expeditions.



The Hall of Medium Harmony is where the emperors rested before major ceremonies or receiving officials.



The Hall of Protective Harmony is where the emperors gave banquets and interviewed those who had successfully passed the gruelling imperial examinations. This is the emperor's throne.



The front chamber of the Palace of Heavenly Purity, where the emperor attended to state affairs almost everyday.



Hall of Union and Peace-
Lying between the Palace of Heavenly Purity and the Hall of Earthly Peace, the Hall of Union and Peace was used for the safekeeping of 25 jade seals of the imperial court. Representing monarchial authority, they were placed in golden boxes covered with yellow silk.



The Hall of Earthly Peace was the residence of the empress and contained her bed chamber The picture shows the east side chamber of the hall, which served as the bridal chamber for the emperor and empress during their wedding. As a rule, they stayed here only for three days before returning to their respective residences.



This would be the emperor's view upon entering the Imperial Garden, built in 1417. The large urn ahead is an incense burner.



Gate of Divine Prowess-

to the Gate of Divine Might, the rear gate of the Forbidden City.

The Forbidden City or Gugong is a maze of palaces, each with its own walls, was built between 1417 and 1420 and covers 73 hectares. It was the seat of government and the residence of the Emperor and his family. The roofs are golden tile and no one else is allowed to use that color. Off to the left is the Median Gate. after that courtyard you cross the Golden Stream and the next building is the Hall of Supreme Harmony (Taihemen). The Taihemen is the largest building in the Forbidden City. This hall is the formal throne room used on the emperor's birthday and for major festivals, and no woman, not even the Dowager Empress Ci Xi, ever set foot in it.

tak kisah la kalau sekadar in layman's word sekali pun..
lebih bererti dari sekadar menjamu mata....'perceiving eyes'

sorry mje nak up topik ni...

kat umak ni mje dapat satu channel dari mana tak tau la rasa2  blanda ker , suka sangat tengok walaupun tak paham  sepatah haram.. kat channel ni banyak sangat tunjuk building2 lama dengan macam2  reka bentuk .. cantik sungguh....

kadang2 teringin rasanya satu hari nanti rumah saye saye nak ilhamkan dari ciri binaan klasik melayu lama...dengan ukiran pucuk rebungnya..dengan seni binaan islam,dengan seni binaan rumah yg tidak berpaku..teringin nak bina..berasas kan ilham saye dan ukiran2 dulu..sebab sekarang susah rasanya nak jumpa ukiran klasik.....

kalau tak silap aku. classical architecture ni berkaitan dgn greek & roman.. tapi org selalu bayangkan klasik tu benda lama..

ni bangunan lama feveret aku... bukan classical mahupun medieval period.. tapi modern sebenarnya sebab dibina dlm kurun ke-19.






neuschwanstein... dapat dok sini boleh berangan jadik putera dlm fairy-tale

uniknya (nanti ninoz tanya).. bangunan ni tak dibina pada zaman yg sepatutnya.. tapi sebab raja tu selalu berangan pasal zaman medieval dlm opera feveret raja tu iaitu the parcifal dgn the swan knight..

walaupun dgn facade medieval.. dlm bangunan ni modern (ikut standard zaman tu la..)
