China has closed the base camp on its side of Mount Everestto visitors who don't have climbing permits.

Authorities have resorted to the unusual move to deal withthe mounting waste problem at the site.

The ban means tourists can only go as far as a monasteryslightly below the 5,200m (17,060ft) base camp level.

More people visit the mountain from the southern side inNepal, but over the past years numbers have been rising steadily on the Chineseside as well.

The Chinese base camp, located in Tibet, is popular as it isaccessible by car - whereas the Nepalese camp can only be reached by a hike ofalmost two weeks.

The world's highest peak has been struggling with escalatinglevels of rubbish for years, as the number of visitors rises.

The Chinese Mountaineering Association says 40,000 visitedits base camp in 2015, the most recent year with figures. A record 45,000visited Nepal's base camp in 2016-7 according to Nepal's Ministry of Forestsand Soil Conservation.

Ordinary tourists will only be banned from areas aboveRongbuk monastery, which is around 5,000m above sea level, according to China'sstate news agency Xinhua.

Mountaineers who have a permit to climb the 8,848m peak willstill be allowed to use the higher camp.

In January, authorities announced that they would limit thenumber of climbing permits each year to 300.

On Chinese social media, claims have spread in recent daysthat its base camp will be permanently closed to tourists - but Xinhua citedofficials denying that.

The official announcement about the closure was made inDecember, on the website of the Tibetan authorities.

It stated that three clean-up operations last spring hadcollected eight tonnes of waste, including human faeces and mountaineeringequipment climbers had left behind.

This year's clean-up efforts will also try to remove thebodies of mountaineers who have died in the so-called death zone above 8,000m,where the air is too thin to sustain life for long.

Due to the cold and high altitude, these bodies often remainon the mountain for years or even decades.

Mendaki everest ni dah terlampau dikomersialkan. Ada duit aje boleh pergi. Hinggakan crowded setiap kali musim mendaki.

Based on dokumentari, mount everest ni bukanlah mencabar sangat bagi pendaki berpengalaman.Orang yg ada basic climbing skill boleh daki everest tetapi masih bergantung pada nasib, iaitu faktor cuaca pada hari nak summit dan badan yg boleh tahan low oxygen environment.Yang paling sukar adalah mount K2 dan Annapurna

ye btoi rinjani pon sama kotor nak mampos, i sakit lps balik rinjani tu kate doctor maybe sbb environment kotor sgt dan makanan kt sana tercemar...

ye btoi, kalo naik dr tibet lbh senang dr naik dr nepal...tp urusan nk naik everest dr tibet sgt complicated compare to nepal...sbb tu ada rakyt malaysia yg naik dr tibet tak ramai

yg naik everest ni ramai, kebanyakkan rakyat china just naik sampai base camp je sbb senang kenderaan blh sampai sana trus...mcm konsep sight seeing gitu...bab berak merata tu mmg dh tersemat kt dlm jiwa diorg, pi la memana negara pon tetap gitu perangainya

Expected kalau kat kawasan tanah tinggi akan jadi sebegitu nak2 kawasan atas gunung .  Sebab tu bagus bila ada pengembara yang bercerita mengenai sisi buruk sesuatu tempat tu dan bukan hanya bercita sisi baik dan cantiknya saja.  Jadi sesiapa yang berminat nak kesana boleh bersedia dari segala segi sebelum sampai kesana taklah jadi cultural shock pulak nanti.  Tapi kalau dah terlalu kotor dan tak berjaga elok ditutup dulu dan buat kerja pembersihan macam yang berlaku di sesetengah kawasan pantai di sesetengah negara.
