MARUDI: A population survey has recorded some 550 crocodiles along the 38km Sungai Bakong in Beluru District.
According to Forest Department assistant director Engkamat Lading, this would translate to a population density of 14.5 crocodiles per kilometre along the river.
Up to 14 per cent of the crocodiles recorded were less than a year old.
Engakamat said this during the human-crocodile conflict education and awareness programme here recently, run in connection with the Forest Department’s 100th anniversary.
He said the population survey also found around 200 crocodiles along the 41.6km Batang Baram, from Kuala Tinjar to Marudi, or 4.4 crocodiles per kilometre; while the 35km from Lower Baram to the rivermouth had some 400 crocodiles, or a population density of 11.5 crocodiles per kilometre.
“This is regarding the increasing crocodile population and conflict with the community that resides in the said area. So the programme is to understand the crocodile regulation status and how to reduce the population,” he said.
He said the Forest Department has so far approved 61 licences to hunt saltwater or estuarine crocodiles, and 30 licences to sell the reptiles.
Last year, six crocodile attacks were recorded in Sarawak, with four resulting in deaths, while in 2017 there were 12 attacks and 10 deaths.
