A meteor spotted during the annual Geminid meteor shower on December 14, 2009. According to NASA, a "fireball" is an exceptionally bright meteor that can be seen over a large distance.

(CNN)While you were living your life on December 18th, 2018, a giant space rock exploded 16 miles above the Earth's surface, giving off 10 times the energy of the atomic bomb detonated over Hiroshima. No big deal.

The event is properly called a "fireball," NASA's term for"exceptionally bright meteors that are spectacular enough to to be seen over a very wide area."
With an impact energy of 4.2 kilotons, December's fireball was the second-most powerful to enter Earth's atmosphere in 30 years. You may recall the first -- it was that huge, blinding fireballthat rocked parts of Russia in 2013.

This may sound catastrophic, but images being shared of December's fireball are actually quite poetic in scale. This atomic, otherworldly force appears as a simple red blip above the clouds.

But you likely didn't know about it until now, because scientists only just noticed it. That's because the area where the fireball exploded, over the Bering Sea, is extremely remote.

NASA's Planetary Defense Officer Lindley Johnson told the BBC such a powerful meteor event only happens a few times every 100 years. (As a side note, "Planetary Defense Officer" is probably as close to a real-life "Avengers" title as you're gonna get.)

CNN has reached out to NASA for additional comment.

In case you're not uneasy enough about the reality that flaming extraterrestrial objects are continuously pelting our fragile planet, they do so with alarming regularity.

NASA keeps track of most of the notable fireballs and bolides (a similar astronomical term) that reach Earth. So far in 2019, there have already been five notable fireball events. Don't worry, though! Most are super tiny.

sempat ke nak track. pernah baca meteor ni kelajuan cahaya. dah masuk atmosphera bumi baru boleh detect

meteor2 ni meletup dekat lapisan tebal berlapih lapih atmosfera Bumi ja...tak perenah menghentam permukaan Bumi......lapisan ni tak dak kat planet2 lain....walaupun planet2..kalau ikut teori sains...planet Bumi ni istimewa....ngam2 kedudukan yang betui jarak dia dengan matahari, ada ayaq...tapi sains yang disembah penduboq2 etis yang PERCAYA depa ni keturunan beruk masih sampai la hanya mampu berteori akan asai usui ayaq, dan pembentukan lapisan atmosfera yang mana planet2 lain tak dak.....tapi...saya sentiasa menghormati kepercayaan penduboq2 etis bahawa etis2 ni PERCAYA ASAI USUI MANUSIA DITERANGKAN DALAM TEORI EVOLUSI....manusia itu berasai daripada lubang duboq beruk.........ghapla jingga reasoning kapla akai penduboq2 etis ni kawan2....harap kawan2 tak terpengaruh sama bowdow dengan etis...wakakakakakkakakkakakaa

kalau kecil memang ok meletup dekat atmosfera tak sempat sampai bumi tapi kalau besar memang hentam jugak. macam dekat rusia 2013 tu habis pecah cermin bangunan sekitar berderai.itu tak silap besar baru 2 meter. pernah tengok wawancara saintis negara kata kalau meteor sebesar 1 km terhempas ke bumi memang satu dunia kena tsunami setinggi 35 meter kalau jatuh dalam air sebab impact dia sama dengan 1000 biji bom atom di hiroshima tu. kalau atas darat satu dunia kepanasan dan bergelap. ini lah dukhon agaknya

iols pernah nampak meteor ke taik bintang ke apa entah lah elok je bergerak jatuh ke arah gunung ledang waktu subuh circa 1998. Dari sekolah iols memang clear je nampak gunung ledang...pengalaman yang seumur hidup sekali je la boleh dapat

yang kat russia 2013 pun tak sampai Bumi ceq...meletup kat atmosphere ja....di sini boleh saya simpuikan...terbentuknya atmosfera tu bukan sahaja untuk memerangkap wap air untuk membentuk awan lalu kondens menjadi hujan...tetapi jugak untuk melindungi Bumi dan penduduknya daripada dihentam meteor...tapi malangnya...sains masih berteori tentang bagaimana terjadinya lapisan atmosfera....saya harap penduboq2 etis yang menyembah sains yang percaya bahawa manusia berasai daripada lubang duboq beruk terutama dalam website ini boleh banyak mengkaji tentangnya....wakakakakakakakka
