Nampaknya Pertengahan 2005 ? ? ?

PS3 to be unveiled at next E3

Sony says its next-generation portable will be on display next May, with SDKs to come in Q2 or Q3 2005.
TOKYO--Just over a month after Nintendo announced it would unveil its next-generation console--code-named "Revolution"--at E3 2005, Sony has revealed that it will also use the event to debut the successor to the PlayStation 2. Speaking to a group of developers and media this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi was quoted by Reuters as saying, "There has been some talk that development is not going well, but we expect to have a playable version at E3. We are pushing ahead with that schedule in mind."

Kutaragi did not give a specific release date or a name for the next-generation console, most commonly referred to as the PlayStation 3. However, he did hint that the project is running about one year behind the PSP. Sony's portable is slated to hit Japan by the end of 2004 and America and Europe by March 31, 2005, the end of Sony's current fiscal year.

While surprising in its timing, Kutaragi's announcement jibes nicely with the preconceived order of the next-generation console race. Most analysts had predicted the PS3 to hit the markets in early 2006, several months after Sony stated it will begin mass production of the vaunted Cell processor it is developing with Toshiba and IBM. On the software side, Kutaragi said the first version of the PS3抯 development kit will be distributed to developers during the first half of Sony's 2006 fiscal year (calendar Q2 and Q3 2005), followed by the second SDK in the second half (calendar Q4 2005 and Q1 2006).

Sony's announcement also means that Microsoft is now the only major console maker who has not committed to show its next-gen device, most often called the Xbox Next, at E3 2005. The announcement also likely rattled some nerves in Redmond, since Microsoft has publicly stated that the Xbox Next would beat the PlayStation 3 to market

aku rasa disc biru tuh akan dapat dipiratekan, sebab ala2 format dia tuh kira grandchildren untuk CD, DVD gak. Tak macam disc gamecube dan jugak disc dreamcast yg didesign khas untuk console memasing. Lagi pun BluRay disc nih memang recordable, yg penting skang nih adakah MACHINE nyer (Ps3 ngan Xbox2) tuh modable.

PS3..sorry artikel panjang

Info taken from Playstation Insider: Next Generation

Introduction

The PlayStation 3 (also known as the PS3) is the upcoming gaming console from videogame manufacturer Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) which is a department of Sony. Similar to it抯 predecessor, the PlayStation 2, the PlayStation 3 will move closer towards Sony抯 goal of presenting an entertainment system available to the general masses. This goal will not be met, however, during this generation of gaming hardware. This is mostly due to the fact that the cost to Sony would be too great and those costs would then be reflected onto the consumer. In order to design the PlayStation 3 such entertainment system qualities as a TV tuner or DVD burner, the price of the console would skyrocket out of the reach of a great majority of the intended audience. A more likely scenario is that the PlayStation 3 will have the ability to physically upgrade to include these devices or even releasing a new entertainment system with these components further into production (i.e. PSX).

Processor

In order to design the most powerful processor possible with current technology, Sony formed a partnership with electronics giant Toshiba and supercomputer expert IBM. Together, the companies have assigned a team 300 engineers and are spending (an estimated) $500 Million to develop a new type of processor which has been nick-named the Cell. The processor is actually a collection of smaller processors. Software packets, called 揷ells

Nvidia To Power Next-Gen Sony Console
Lining up against ATI in the new console fight.

By Mark Hachman

Nvidia Corp. and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. said Tuesday that the two companies are working together to develop a graphics subsystem for Sony's next-generation video-game console.
The Nvidia graphics chip will be used to power Sony's next-generation console, which could be called the PlayStation 3, as well as a "broad range of applications from computer entertainment to broadband applications", which has been Sony's design mantra for its next-generation system. The Nvidia chip will apparently be a counterpart to the IBM-Toshiba-Sony designed "Cell" processor, a modular architecture also expected to power a variety of applications.

Neither Nvidia nor Sony disclosed details about the new architecture. However, the collaboration will pay Nvidia royalties over multiple years, and "will encompass future Sony digital consumer electronics products," the two companies said.

The chip will be manufactured at Sony's Nagasaki Fab2 facility, a new production line capable of manufacturing 300mm silicon wafers using its new 65nm process, and Oita TS Semiconductor, a similar manufacturing facility in Japan jointly developed by Sony and Toshiba. Those two facilities currently manufacture the integrated Emotion Engine/Graphics Synthesizer chip for more recent iterations of the PlayStation 2 hardware, and have been the target of substantial investment over the past year to upgrade them for the manufacture of next-generation 65nm semiconductors.

With the disclosure, the next-generation console market has become clearer. Microsoft's next Xbox console will use an IBM PowerPC console ad ATI graphics, while the Sony architecture will also use an IBM core, albeit the proprietary "Cell" architecture. Nintendo has not disclosed the architecture of the next-generation GameCube, although the current machine also uses a PowerPC microprocessor core and a graphics chip desgned by ATI engineers.

"In the future, the experience of computer entertainment systems and broadband-ready PCs will be fused together to generate and transfer multi-streams of rich content simultaneously," said SCE president Ken Kutaragi, in a statement. "In this sense, we have found the best way to integrate the state-of-the-art technologies from Nvidia and SCEI. Our collaboration includes not only the chip development but also a variety of graphics development tools and middleware, essential for efficient content creation."
