After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. “The Mandalorian” is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic.

The titular role is portrayed by Chilean-American actor Pedro Pascal who is most recognised by his role as Oberyn Martell aka the Red Viper in Games of Thrones.

The Mandalorian (also known as Star Wars: The Mandalorian) is an upcoming American space western web television series scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on November 12, 2019. Set in the Star Wars universe, the series will take place five years after the events of Return of the Jedi and follows a Mandalorian bounty hunter beyond the reaches of the New Republic.

Jon Favreau serves as creator, head writer, showrunner, and co-executive producer, alongside Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. The show is set to star Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Nick Nolte, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Bill Burr, Omid Abtahi, Taika Waititi, and Werner Herzog. There will be eight episodes in the first season.

The Mandalorian takes place five years after the fall of the Empire as depicted in Return of the Jedi and twenty-five years before the emergence of the First Order depicted in The Force Awakens. It follows an independent Mandalorian bounty hunter "in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic".

A new hope for Star Wars on Disney Plus in ‘The Mandalorian’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Never heard of a Mandalorian? You’re not alone.

Actor Pedro Pascal hadn’t either when he started talking to Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni about an ambitious new “Star Wars” series that would become a marquee offering for the Walt Disney Co.’s new streaming service, Disney Plus, which launches Nov. 12.

But Pascal, known for playing Oberyn Martell on “Game of Thrones,” knew that this Mandalorian character looked a lot like Boba Fett and that was enough for him. The stoic bounty hunter behind the helmet who made his debut in “The Empire Strikes Back” became a cultish fan favorite and happened to be Pascal’s preferred action figure as a kid. When he got out of the meeting and wanted to share the news, he could barely get the words out.

“I was like, ‘They want me to be — it’s not Boba Fett, but it’s like, you remember. They want me to be the coolest looking thing in Star Wars, you know?’” Pascal says, channeling his energy from that day. “It was a big geeky moment.”

Pascal and anyone else scratching their heads about how they might have missed this Mandalorian concept can rest easy: It’s not even a word that’s uttered in the original trilogy. But the idea comes straight from George Lucas himself. He had envisioned a race of warrior peoples called the Mandalore that ended up getting streamlined into one character in the films — Boba Fett. “Star Wars” literature and series like “The Clone Wars” helped keep the Mandalorians alive over the years, and it re-emerged again when Disney and Lucasfilm started thinking about non-Skywalker ideas for the new streaming service where it’s primed to get its biggest audience yet.

“The Lion King” and “Jungle Book” director Jon Favreau was enlisted to executive produce and write for “The Mandalorian,” which is set in the franchise’s Outer Rim five years after “Return of the Jedi” and 25 years before the events of “The Force Awakens.” The eight episode series, which will roll out on a near-weekly basis, follows the title character in his bounty hunting adventures.

The world around him is full of seedy and mysterious characters, like Greef Carga, played by Carl Weathers, who leads a bounty hunter guild, and former soldier Cara Dune, played by Gina Carano. As with all recent Star Wars properties, details are being kept as secret as possible. “I had to cut my finger and sign in blood that I would say nothing about it, not even say I was doing it, that I was part of it. They’re very protective of Star Wars, the stories, the Mandalorian, the brand, and it makes sense,” Weathers said. “We all want to protect it also.”

But from early footage and the nature of the bounty hunting profession, “The Mandalorian” does seem a little darker than your average Star Wars story. It’s been described as a Western, leaving it open as to whether the lead characters are good, bad or somewhere in between. “We can be pulled to any side, any one of us,” said Carano. “Even when you begin the journey with the Mandalorian, you aren’t sure what side you’re on.”

Pascal agreed that it’s meant to be ambiguous. “They separate good and evil so perfectly in the world of Star Wars. And in this one it’s like we’re way more at the center,” Pascal said. “We’re past those borders, and past those very, very linear, very specific lines of definition.”

While Star Wars is no stranger to the small screen, those efforts have mostly been animated. So when initial trailers debuted for “The Mandalorian,” in glorious live-action, many observed how movie-like it seemed, as though it would fit right in on the big screen alongside the “Star Wars” spinoffs like “Rogue One” or “Solo.” A reported $15 million per episode budget probably didn’t hurt.

It’s also a gesture of investment into a new phase of the Star Wars universe under Disney. The Skywalker saga is coming to an end with “The Rise of Skywalker,” which opens in theaters on Dec. 20, and the next cinematic trilogy is going through its own restructuring with the recent news that its overseers, “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, have parted ways with Lucasfilm.

But “The Mandalorian” could help ease the gap as the future is plotted. And Favreau is already at work on a second season. The involvement of Favreau and Filoni, who directed the pilot and has been behind “Star Wars” projects like “The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels” has everyone confident in the product. “They are the Star Wars fans,” said Carano. “This is made for (fans) because two of their own are making it.”

Explaining the Difference Between the Mandalorian and Bobba Fett

The titular hero in the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian shares passing similarities with another fan-favorite character from the original trilogy, Boba Fett. They wear the same uniform, and they are both bounty hunters.

But Disney and Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau have emphasized that these two men are not the same person. (Sorry, Boba Fett fans.) In its initial release describing the show, the studio distanced this new character from Boba Fett and his father, Jango, who both feature in the films: “After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe.”

Here’s everything you need to know about the difference between Boba Fett and the new, unnamed Mandalorian played by Game of Thrones actor Pedro Pascal.

Boba Fett is not technically a Mandalorian

Yes, both wear the armor of the planet Mandalore. But Boba Fett is not, technically, a true Mandalorian.

In Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, George Lucas establishes that Boba Fett is a clone of the Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett. Jango Fett raised Boba Fett as his son on the planet of Kamino. While Boba Fett is taught the ways of the Mandalorians and wears the armor of the bounty hunters on that planet, as a clone, he doesn’t really have a homeland or truly grow up in the Mandalorian culture.

Jon Favreau, the Mandalorian showrunner, emphasizes that the character played by Pedro Pascal on the new show is much more ingrained in the Mandalorian traditions. “Our guy is a Mandalorian, and we definitely explore the culture of the Mandalorian,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

They operate in two different time periods

Jango Fett raised Boba Fett as a son during the time of the prequel movies. Boba Fett grew up to be a bounty hunter operating while the Empire ruled the galaxy, primarily for Jabba the Hutt.

Boba Fett (spoiler alert) is killed unceremoniously by Han Solo in Return of the Jedi when Solo blindly knocks him into the sarlacc pit, presumably to be eaten by the monster that swallows people whole. (Though there are plenty of Boba fans on the Internet who insist that he survived.)

The Mandalorian played by Pascal is operating at the edge of the galaxy in the years after Boba Fett’s death. After the Empire falls in Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, the galaxy descends into chaos. There’s no stable government in place, and especially in the far-flung regions, a kill-or-be-killed mentality rules. This is when we meet Pascal’s Mandalorian, long before the events of Episode VII – The Force Awakens.

“Our guy is operating in a much more unforgiving landscape,” Favreau told EW. “A place where survival is difficult enough, let alone flourishing in that atmosphere and the politics have dissolved. It’s ‘might is right.’ And how does somebody earn a living when there’s no structure to society anymore and everything is collapsing in on itself? How do you work your way through the world?”

Boba Fett was a villain. The Mandalorian is more complicated

Boba Fett worked for Jabba the Hutt, one of the major bad guys in the original trilogy. He captures and tortures Han Solo, allows Darth Vader to freeze Solo and delivers the frozen pilot to Jabba. He has no redeeming qualities.

It’s unclear whether the Mandalorian in The Mandalorian will be hero or a villain. Pascal has suggested he will fall somewhere in between. “Ultimately he wants to do the right thing,” Pascal told EW. “But his duties could very much be in conflict with his destiny and doing the right thing has many faces. It can be a very windy road.”

There’s a tiny chance Boba Fett could still cameo in the show

Plenty of people on the internet are convinced Boba Fett is still alive. And why make a show about a Mandalorian unless you are going to reference the bounty hunter his character seems to be modeled after? There’s the tiniest chance that that Boba Fett will eventually show up on this show, if only to riff on the twin Spider-Man meme.
