The new Sarawak Museum Complex, the largest in Malaysia and second largest in South-East Asia will be opened in April next year, said State Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He said the RM323mil museum complex was initially planned to be launched in December this year but was postponed due to the pandemic.
"Currently, the process of arranging artefacts in the museum is going well, ” he said after witnessing the receiving ceremony of the Melanau tribe burial pole "Kelidieng" at the complex recently.
He said the over 200-year old Kelidieng pole from Sungai Ud, Dalat was among the 200 large exhibition artefacts that would be displayed including an Iban war boat and two Punan burial poles in the 6,726sq m museum.
"In total, 1,660 exhibits will be displayed in the new museum and will become a must-visit place by people in the city, ” he added.
On the public entry fee to the museum, Abdul Karim said the rate has yet to be fixed and is being discussed but there will be different rates for Sarawak locals and non-residents.
"To promote our culture to the younger generation, we must keep the rate to the minimum to showcase Sarawak’s ethnic groups and understand the cultural customs, ” he added. - Bernama
