Teacher beheaded in France after showing class cartoons of Prophet Muhammed

PARIS, Oct 17 — A French teacher who had recently shown students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed was beheaded outside his school yesterday, in what President Emmanuel Macron called an “Islamist terrorist attack.”
The assailant, whose identity has not been established, was shot by police as they tried to arrest him and later died of his injuries, police said.
The attacker shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is Greater”) as police confronted him, a cry often heard in jihadist attacks, a police source said.
France has seen a wave of Islamist violence since the 2015 terror attacks on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket in the capital.
French anti-terror prosecutors said they were treating the assault as “a murder linked to a terrorist organisation.”
The attack happened on the outskirts of Paris at around 5:00 pm (1500 GMT) near the middle school where the teacher worked in Conflans Saint-Honourine, a northwestern suburb around 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the centre of the French capital.
The killing bore the hallmarks of “an Islamist terrorist attack,” President Emmanuel Macron said as he visited the scene.
Visibly moved, Macron said that “the entire nation” stood ready to defend teachers and that “obscurantism will not win.”
‘Super nice, super friendly’
The victim was a history teacher who recently showed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed as part of a class discussion on freedom of expression, police said.
A parent of a pupil at the school said the teacher might have stirred “controversy” by asking Muslim pupils to leave the room before showing the cartoons.
“According to my son, he was super nice, super friendly, super kind,” the parent, Nordine Chaouadi, told AFPTV.
The teacher “simply said to the Muslim children: ‘Leave, I don’t want it to hurt your feelings.’ That’s what my son told me,” he said.
Police said they were investigating a tweet posted from an account that recently showed a headshot of the teacher, and which has since been shut down.
It was unclear whether the message, which contained a threat against Macron — described as “the leader of the infidels” — had been posted by the attacker, they said.
‘Nothing ever happens here’
Residents in the usually calm neighbourhood said they were shocked while pupils from the school, some accompanied by their parents, gathered in the street checking their phones for updates.
“Nothing ever happens here,” said Mohand Amara, who lives nearby, as he walked his dog not far from the school.
“It makes me sad — decapitated, that’s shocking,” said 15-year-old Virginie, who used to be the murdered teacher’s student and said she had “good memories” of him.
Police had arrived at the scene after receiving a call about a suspicious individual loitering near the school, a police source said.
They discovered the dead man and soon spotted the suspect, armed with a blade, who threatened them as they tried to arrest him.
They opened fire and injured him severely. The man later died of his injuries, a judicial source said.
‘Abominable’
The scene was cordoned off and a bomb disposal unit dispatched because of the suspected presence of an explosive vest, a police source said.
France’s parliament suspended yesterday’s debate after news of the decapitation, with session president Hugues Renson, visibly moved, calling the attack “abominable.”
MPs stood as Renson said that “in the name of all of us, I want to honour the memory of the victim.”
Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer tweeted: “The Republic is under attack.”
The killing comes as security forces have been on high alert during the ongoing trial of suspected accomplices of the attackers in the January 2015 terror attacks in Paris, which also saw a policewoman gunned down in the street.
It also comes just days after a follower of the Islamic State militant group who attacked a police officer with a hammer outside the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris was sentenced to 28 years in jail.
And last month, charges were brought against a 25-year old Pakistani man after he wounded two people with a meat cleaver to avenge the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammed by Charlie Hebdo, which purportedly prompted the 2015 killings.
Seventeen people were killed in the three-day spree that heralded a wave of Islamist violence in France that has so far claimed more than 250 lives. — AFP

PARIS: Seorang guru yang mengajar subjek sejarah di Perancis ditetak sehingga mati kerana menunjukkan kartun Nabi Muhammad di kelas baru-baru ini, kata polis.
Penyerang itu, yang identitinya belum dikenal pasti, ditembak polis apabila mereka cuba menahannya. Beliau mati akibat kecederaan yang dialaminya.
Penyerang berkenaan melaung “Allahu Akbar” semasa polis berdepan dengannya, menurut sumber rasmi.
Pendakwa anti keganasan Perancis berkata, mereka menganggap serangan itu sebagai “kes pembunuhan terkait organisasi pengganas” dan “kumpulan penjenayah dengan pengganas”.
Presiden Perancis Emmanuel Macron melawat tempat kejadian berikutan serangan berkenaan, kata pegawainya.
Serangan itu berlaku di pinggir Paris pada pukul 5.00 petang berdekatan sebuah sekolah di Conflans St Honorine, sebuah pinggir bandar yang terletak 30km dari ibu negara.
Menurut sumber polis, mangsa adalah seorang guru mengajar yang subjek sejarah di sebuah sekolah menengah tempatan.
Beliau membincang kartun Nabi Muhammad di kelas baru-baru ini.

A 47-year-old history teacher in Paris who had shown pupils a Charlie Hebdo caricature of the Muslim prophet was murdered in a brutal terror attack

A killer who decapitated a teacher in France posted an horrific photo of the victim before he was shot dead by police, according to reports.
The suspect stabbed the middle school history teacher to death in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, a residential suburb north-west of Paris on Friday afternoon in a brutal terror attack.
The 47-year-old teacher was killed near the school, where earlier this month he had shown his pupils cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, French officials said on Friday.
Showing or creating cartoons of Prophet Muhammad is considered blasphemous by Muslims and has previously been the cause of terrorist attacks in France, when extremists targeted the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
Police shot the suspect, believed to be an 18-year-old born in Moscow, dead just a few miles from the scene of the stabbing.
He was heard shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ – Arabic for God is the Greatest – before posting the gruesome image on social media, it's claimed, along with a threat in French to those who "insult" the prophet Muhammad.
The account has since been suspended.
After the attack on the history teacher, the killer fled to the nearby town of Eragny-sur-Oise, around two miles away, where he refused to surrender, while waving a kitchen knife in the air.
"The body of the decapitated man was found at around 5.30 in the afternoon," said an investigating source.
"When police arrived, the person responsible was still present and threatened them with his weapons."
"He was waving his weapon by this time and further threatened officers," said the source.
"This is when he was shot dead by police. Around ten shots were heard."
Anti-terrorist prosecutors immediately began investigating the incident and linked it with radical Islamism.
French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters at the scene of the attack: "One of our fellow citizens was assassinated today because he was teaching, he was teaching pupils about freedom of expression.
"Our compatriot was flagrantly attacked, was the victim of an Islamist terrorist attack.
"They won't win. We will act. Firmly, And quickly. You can count on my determination."
The teacher, identified by French media as Samuel P, had enraged parents by displaying cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad to pupils at his school.
Formal complaints had been made about him, including by one parent who published a video expressing his anger.
A Twitter thread posted on October 9 contained a video of a man who said his Muslim daughter was one of the pupils in the class, and that she was shocked and upset by the teacher's actions.
The man in the video urged Twitter users to complain to the authorities and get the teacher removed from his post.
Nordine Chaouadi told Reuters he was the father of a 13-year-old pupil who attended the civics class given by the
teacher, whom parents gathered outside the college referred to as Mr Paty.
The teacher had asked pupils who were Muslim to raise their hands and invited them to leave, advising them he would be showing a caricature of Mohammad that might cause offence, said Chaouadi.
"He did it to protect the children, not to shock them," added Chaouadi.
A source told Le Parisien: "The victim had recently given a lesson to his students on freedom of expression and had shown the caricatures of Muhammad."
The attack comes after two journalists were stabbed outside the former offices of Charlie Hebdo last month.
The magazine was first targeted in 2015, when 12 staff members were murdered after publishing cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad.
