[MCU Updates] Loki Proves In Endgame How Captain America's MCU Return Can Work

What Marvel did with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in Avengers: Endgame shows how the MCU can bring Captain America (Chris Evans) back in Phase 4. Avengers: Infinity War killed off the God of Mischief, but the next installment brought him back into the fold and set up a new adventure for the character. Loki will be getting his own Disney+ series sometime in 2021.
As for the Sentinel of Liberty, it appeared that his story was over with his retirement in Avengers: Endgame, plus Chris Evans has made it clear that he won’t play Steve Rogers again. However, a recent report has cast doubt on that. Reportedly, Evans and Marvel are negotiating a deal that will see him reprise his Captain America role in one or two undisclosed Marvel projects. Evans has downplayed this news, so for now, his return remains unconfirmed.
If Steve Rogers is coming back, it’s important that Marvel do it in a way that doesn’t ruin Captain America's Avengers: Endgame ending. In other words, it shouldn’t continue his story or undo his big decision by retrieving him from the timestream. Instead, Marvel should follow its own example by looking at what it did with Loki. In the movie, the Avengers accidentally created a divergent timeline by returning to the Battle of New York and causing the 2012 Loki to escape with the Space Stone. Since that wasn’t supposed to happen, there’s now a new timeline where Loki doesn’t get turned over to the Asgardians after The Avengers. This version of the villain will be running loose in the timestream and crossing paths with the Time Variance Authority (TVA) in Loki.
Wherever Marvel decides to take Loki in his show doesn’t run the risk of hurting his Infinity War ending, because this is a different version of the character. Nothing that the show will do is going to change the fact that the MCU’s main Loki died a hero’s death on Grandmaster’s ship. This is an effective approach, and one that would work for Steve too. If and when Chris Evans plays Captain America again, the character audiences see may be a version of him who comes from somewhere in the multiverse. There may exist a timeline where Cap’s life took a different path. Because of all the different ways certain MCU events could have played out, the possible scenarios are endless.
In fact, it could be that Loki’s show will actually be what brings about Steve Rogers' divergent timeline. Based on what is known about Loki himself and the Loki series, he’s sure to be creating havoc in other time periods. There’s no telling how many new timelines his actions will create. The one that Phase 4’s Captain America comes from could easily be one of them. It may be that during a multiverse adventure – whether it be in Doctor Strange 2 or a different Marvel project – he’ll leave his own timeline and assist Earth’s superheroes in a large-scale battle, potentially making up for his absence in Avengers: Endgame.
