What is Dandruff

Dandruff is a skin disorder also known as seborrheic dermatitis. It’s triggered by overproduction and buildup of skin cells of the scalp, which, once dead, shed either as clumps or individual flakes. Dandruff is sometimes accompanied by an itchy scalp, but not always.

Many studies have identified a type of fungus, generally known as Malassezia, as the primary cause of the problem. This fungus lives naturally on the scalp of many people, but is especially abundant on the scalps of those who struggle with dandruff.

Despite the conclusions of the research that identify Malassezia as the culprit, treatment options for dandruff have not changed much over the years. In fact, the same ingredients in anti-dandruff products that have been used for years are still effective for reducing the amount of fungus present, thus controlling the symptoms.

Is it Dandruff or Something Else?
Now for the tricky part: not all cases of flaky scalp are dandruff. Flaky scalp can be the result of seasonal dry scalp, a buildup of hairstyling products, or a side effect of topical medications like Rogaine (minoxidil), all of which can cause flaking that is easily mistaken for dandruff.

Fortunately, it’s simple to determine whether it’s dandruff or not. If the flakes stop when the season changes again, or when you stop using heavy styling products, or when you stop applying minoxidil, you know it’s not dandruff. True dandruff is a persistent problem that is rarely affected by the climate or by the products you use.

What Works to Treat Dandruff?

For a flaky scalp that is indeed due to dandruff, we describe some of the best, research-supported ingredients and products to consider below. Keep in mind that dandruff products do NOT have to be expensive; don’t waste your money believing that expensive haircare means better results—it’s just not true.

Zinc Pyrithione (ZPT) shampoos and conditioners: ZPT is the oldest and the most often used anti-dandruff ingredient. It’s found in many antifungal shampoos and conditioners, including Head & Shoulders, Dove Dandruff Care, DHS Zinc Shampoo, and Zincon Medicated Dandruff products. If you have stubborn dandruff, check the label to make sure you’re using higher concentrations (2%). While these rinse-out products do help, leave-on products with ZPT often provide better results.
Zinc Pyrithione leave-on products: As mentioned above, shampoos with ZPT can be very effective, but leave-on products with ZPT can provide even better results. Like many ingredients, ZPT works best if left on the surface of skin so it remains there long enough to have a greater effect.
The only leave-on options with ZPT we’re aware of are Head and Shoulders Clinical Solutions Leave-On Dandruff Treatment and DermaZinc Cream. You’re instructed to massage the product into your scalp once or twice daily. You apply it at night and leave it in; in the morning, after shampooing your hair, you reapply it and leave it in all day.

Note: You can leave a shampoo or conditioner with ZPT on your scalp for a while before rinsing, but that still doesn’t give you the same results as a leave-on product.

Ketoconazole (KET): KET is another ingredient that can control proliferation of the fungus known to cause dandruff. Using a product with KET is a great option, especially if ZPT hasn’t worked for you. Nizoral is an example of a shampoo that contains KET. Products with 2% KET have been shown to be better for stubborn dandruff than other anti-dandruff ingredients.
Ketoconazole (KET) leave-on products: The same reason to use a leave-on product containing ZPT also applies to KET. Consult your physician for leave-on options medicated with KET, as such products are not available over-the-counter.
Combination of Ketoconazole and Zinc Pyrithione: If you don’t get the results you want from either a ZPT or KET product, it might be worth trying a product that contains both of these anti-fungal ingredients. This is something to discuss with your physician.

Coal tar: A by-product of coal after it’s processed has been shown to be very effective for dandruff and other forms of seborrheic dermatitis. The most well-known coal-tar shampoo is Neutrogena T-Gel (but there are others). Coal tar fights dandruff by slowing the rate at which the skin cells on your scalp die and flake off. It’s not the most elegant ingredient—it looks and smells bad—but it works. You’re likely to find information on the internet asserting that coal tar is a carcinogen, but the research is at best mixed, and many studies have shown it to be safe and effective.

Selenium sulfide: This works similarly to coal tar in that it slows the rate of skin cell death and thus the accumulation of dead skin cells. A bonus: Selenium sulfide doesn’t have the odor or aesthetic issues of coal tar. You can find selenium sulfide in Selsun Blue shampoo and Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength Dandruff and Seborrheic Dermatitis Shampoo, among others.

Salicylic acid: Also known as BHA, salicylic acid is an exfoliating superstar that helps slough off excess skin cells anywhere they accumulate on skin, including on the scalp. It can be very effective for dandruff and presents less risk of irritation than other options for treating this concern. BHA also has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, making it an option for addressing itchy, flaky scalp and reducing the Malassezia fungus. Popular shampoos with salicylic acid are Denorex and Neutrogena T/Sal Therapeutic Shampoo.

Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca): When it comes to any skin condition, the desire for a natural solution is, well, a natural inclination. Tea tree oil is one of the only natural options for dandruff that has any research behind it, although that isn’t saying much because the research is very limited; also, the research is often performed by the company doing the study, and so it might be biased. However, tea tree oil does have anti-fungal properties that might be helpful for mild forms of dandruff. Several shampoos and conditioners contain tea tree oil, including Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo and Kiehl’s Tea Tree Oil Shampoo. Going the “natural” route will cost you more, but the results won’t necessarily be any better.

Inherently, the anti-fungal properties of all these anti-dandruff products present a risk of irritation, which often can be mitigated by changing how often you use them.

What Causes Hair Loss?
Before we jump into solutions, it’s important to address what causes hair loss in the first place, so you can pinpoint how to treat it.

Hair loss is primarily a result of genetics, and has to do with changes in your hormone levels. For women, menopause results in an inevitable decrease of estrogen and an increase of testosterone and its more potent offshoot, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Testosterone and DHT are the main culprits of what is called male pattern hair loss, in both men and women.

Other causes of hair loss include health issues, such as thyroid problems, reactions to medical treatments such as chemotherapy, the side effects of medications (including steroids), serious illness, auto-immune disorders, alopecia, pregnancy, unusually high levels of stress, and malnutrition. If you suspect your hair loss may be due to health-related issues, it’s critical to consult with your physician for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Other typical culprits are over-bleaching hair, thermal straightening, perming, or wearing heavy hair extensions that damage hair to the point where it literally starts to fall out. If any of these sound familiar, then the primary thing you need to do is stop this type of assault on your hair. That may be all it takes to get your hair to come back.

Can Vitamins or Supplements Help Hair Grow?

Given the vast number of vitamins and supplements claiming to grow hair, you would think there wouldn’t be a receding hairline in sight! Obviously, that isn’t the case.

Here’s the deal: If you aren’t seriously vitamin deficient, there’s little chance that supplements can change a single thinning hair on your head. In fact, there’s research showing that overuse of supplements that contain selenium, Vitamin A, or Vitamin E might actually make hair loss worse!

If you are truly vitamin deficient, it’s important to consult with your physician to find out which vitamin(s) or element you’re lacking. Blood tests can show if you are low in vitamin D, zinc, or iron, all of which are related to hair growth. Getting these nutrients back within the normal range can definitely make a difference in your well-being and possibly increase the density of your hair.

Biotin, in particular, shows up frequently in supplements marketed to improving hair growth. Despite its popularity, however, no clinical trials have proven its efficacy for treating hair loss (unless a biotin deficiency was already present, which is extremely rare).

Vitamin C, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, amino acids, and B vitamins also tend to show up in so-called “hair-growth” pills. All of these are basic components in most vitamin supplements (including prenatal vitamins), so if you really want to give them a try, you don’t need to get them from an overly expensive hair-growth pill. But again, the research backing these ingredients for hair growth just isn’t there.

Does Diet Affect Hair Growth?
As is true for every part of your body, an overall healthy diet can help improve your hair to a certain degree. Don’t worry about stuffing yourself with foods like lentils, walnuts, or salmon, which are often touted for hair growth. Instead focus on eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and keep your expectations realistic.

You may also be wondering about protein, as hair is mostly made up of protein (keratin). A serious protein deficiency can cause hair loss, but this type of deficiency affects only a small percentage of the population. This is another instance where you need to check with your doctor and follow the doctor’s orders.

What Really Works for Hair Loss?
For men and women struggling with thinning hair, the topical drug minoxidil (A.K.A. Rogaine) is the most well-researched and safest option with conclusive evidence. Rogaine has been proven to significantly restore hair growth and slow hair loss to some degree. The trick is to start using it as soon as you notice any amount of hair loss, because waiting limits minoxidil’s effectiveness. And you must use it every day, twice a day. Minoxidil is not a cure, but it is a solution for the symptoms of hair loss.

Not surprisingly, many hair-growing systems often include minoxidil as part of their product offering. In reality, minoxidil is the only ingredient in the system that really does anything. The ads and infomercials go on at length about exotic plant extracts or special vitamin complexes being the miracle you’ve been waiting for, but when you look at the label, sure enough, there’s minoxidil listed among the ingredients. And, of course, there is no independent published research showing that the exotic plant extracts do anything other than waste your money.

The takeaway here: Consult with your physician to diagnose your hair loss and then start using minoxidil (5% for both men and women has been shown to have the most benefit). In three to four months you should see results!

Before we jump into solutions, it’s important to address what causes hair l ...

Finding a good shampoo yang reasonably priced di pasaran senang je, and usually dekat guardian watson pun byk product yang best2... iols kalu mencari shampooo

1. micellar water shampoo... lembut, tp lifted off all oils from our scalp.. bagus laa i rasa... so kalo i nak pakai shampooo yang strong utk clean scalp, i akan make sure i alternate it by using this soft and mild shampoo.... now dah banyak brand yang using this as their base for shampoo contoh cam pantene, dove, l'occitane, neutrogena... i currently pakai pantene punya micellar shampoo.. okay la mild... kulit kepala i pun tak rengsa pakai shampoo ni...

2. Alpecin products, yang ni ada banyak dekat watson guardian... good utk cuci kulit kepala.. tp kena alternate dengan milder shampoo macam micellar tu la kot

3. selsun blue
many of my friends mmg swear with this effective scalp shampoo utk eliminate dandruff.. easily available in watson, guardian... good utk cuci kulit kepala.. tp kena alternate dengan milder or moisturizing shampoo

tgh free ni boleh la iols taip panjang sikit.

rambut iols takde cantik mana. tapi iols agak detail dengan penjagaan rambut.

everyday
iols guna shampoo herbal essences argan oil warna hijau untuk reduce rambut gugur.

massage my hair with this..this is sooo good. boleh nampak beza rambut tumbuh lagi cepat.
.
dah bilas, then iols pulas sikit rambut bagi air takde, baru bubuh conditioner.
conditioner pakai tresemme keratin smooth conditioner. iols color treated hair. so payah jugak nak cari conditioner yang okay.

habis mandi, iols pakai tuala khas tuk rambut which is tuala dari microfibre je. tuala lain dah tak nak pakai. cepat kering and rambut pon tak kasar.

dah kering sikit, baru pakai minyak or serum rambut.
iols pakai these products on alternate days.
i. innisfree hair serum
ii. kundal hair serum botol purple.

dah kering sikit lagi, baru sikat rambut guna sikat ni..

iols akan pegang rambut atas, then sikat bawah dulu. untuk kurang kan tangle bawah. bila dah takde tangle dr bawah, then baru iols sikat dari atas.
kalau kita sikat rambut dari atas terus, then tersekat2 sampai ke bawah, buat rambut kita makin lemah.

twice a week, iols pakai hair scrub..

and hair mask

rambut iols akan macam kuar dari saloon, dan tahan sampai sehari lebih. iols tak penah cuba la sampai dua hari sebab hari2 basuh rambut.

vitamin, baru beli..dekat farmasi caring. so tak boleh nak komen lagi.

i ni memang bermasalah rambut dari kecil .. i guess its genetic. ada my aunt from father side yg rambut nipis sgt2 yg boleh nampak kulit kepala.

So, my mum tak nak anak dia ni jadi macam tu so, masa i sekolah rendah & dah mula masalah grey hari & rambut nipis, mak i buat regime macam ni setiap minggu:
1.  hari sabtu pagi letak kepala santan, biar sampai zohor, baru basuh & shampoo sikit
2. hari ahad pagi - alternate antara daun bunga raya & daun bunga cina - ramas2 & lendir air tu letak di kepala - sama juga sampai zohor baru basuh & shampoo sikit

hampir 2 bulan buat regime ni, yg grey hair tu boleh nampak naik balik hitam kat akar & anak2 rambut tumbuh dgn galaknya ...

Alhamdulillah, it stays strong until recently bila usia meningkat ni, hormon change & vitamin absorption pun kurang

I ambil supplement biotin from GNC di samping Calcium tablet

shampoo - sebelum ni guna head & shoulder, now rasa mcm mengeringkan pulak, so, i tukar to Biotin shampoo from GNC. memang berbeza la, mild shampoo tapi mampu utk prevent dandruff & rambut gugur .. harga nya agak buat jantung gugur - 250ml rm60++ camtu. L'occitane tak sesuai dgn i.

Nice sharing on the GNC products dear...

Interesting bab head and shoulder shampoo tu.. arwah my mom pun pengguna tegar head shoulder menthol tu.. mmg rambut sheols lebat hingga akhir hayat.. but yes its a bit drying so kena compensate dgn rajin sapu minyak or leave on conditioner kat hujung rambut..

I pun ada pakai tonic and ada terlalu byk baby hair so nampak frizzy... tatau cemane nak buat sbb nak sapu minyak tak berani sbb baby hair kan dekat scalp... kena sapu careful

Iols pun masih mencuba usaha utk mengurangkan keguguran rambut.. sblm2 ni iols suka kaler2 rambut la, highlight rambut la.. pernah rebond, pastu pegi perm balik.. walhal rambut iols mmg jenis wavy pun...

Rambut iols kering.. mmg jenis kena rajin jaga... not gifted with great hair though... cuma iols jenis takde uban je lah... ni gambar yang dah berbulan tak gi treatment rambut salon... potong pun sendiri2 je sbb rambut jenis cepat panjang, every 2 months i kena potong rambut dalam 2-3  inci
