Ugur Sahin, co-founder and CEO of BioNTech and Kathrin Jansen, head of vaccine research and development at Pfizer, speak with STAT's Matthew Herper.

The world will not get the Covid-19 pandemic under control without using booster shots for messenger RNA vaccines, one of the key figures involved in the development of the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine said Tuesday.

Ugur Sahin, co-founder and CEO of BioNTech, insisted booster shots are going to be necessary, despite caution from some experts.

“At the end of the day it really matters that we get this pandemic under control. And we will not get it under control without boosting. That’s my strong opinion,” Sahin said.

Kelantan hentikan bekalan vaksin Sinovac

Kota Bharu: Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Kelantan (JKNK) akan menghentikan pengagihan vaksin Sinovac dengan digantikan vaksin Pfizer di semua Pusat Pemberian Vaksin (PPV) di Kelantan.

Pengarah Kesihatan Negeri, Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin berkata, bekalan vaksin berkenaan akan ditamatkan mulai akhir Julai ini.

"Untuk makluman bekalan vaksin Sinovac kepada Kelantan akan ditamatkan pada akhir Julai dan akan digantikan dengan vaksin Pfizer.

"Oleh yang demikian mulai 18 Julai ini, semua PPV hanya akan dibekal dengan dos kedua vaksin Sinovac.

"Tiada lagi bekalan untuk dos pertama mulai tarikh berkenaan," katanya menerusi notis pemberitahuan yang bertarikh 13 Julai.

Sementara itu, Dr Zaini ketika dihubungi mengesahkan notis berkenaan benar namun tidak menjelaskan kenapa vaksin berkenaan dihentikan.

Bagaimanapun katanya, ia tidak membabitkan pengurangan bekalan vaksin kepada negeri itu.

"Selepas ini Kelantan hanya gunakan Pfizer sahaja," katanya.

Germany funded the development of Pfizer’s COVID vaccine—not U.S.’s Operation Warp Speed

It’s said that success has many authors, and the encouraging data from Pfizer Inc.’s experimental COVID-19 vaccine had plenty of people in Washington lining up to take credit.

Vice President Mike Pence was among Trump administration officials saying support from the government’s Operation Warp Speed program helped accelerate the development of the vaccine, which was found to be more than 90% effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 infections in an interim analysis.

The truth is that Pfizer didn’t receive any funding from Operation Warp Speed for the development, clinical trial and manufacturing of the vaccine. Rather, its partner, BioNTech SE, has received money -- from the German government.


BioNTech is credited for contributing the messenger RNA technology, which prompts the body to make a key protein from the virus, creating an immune response. The biotechnology company already had a history of working with Pfizer on influenza vaccines, and in March they clinched a deal to co-develop a shot to prevent against COVID-19 at research sites both in the U.S. and Germany. The two companies began human testing of the vaccine in April, before the existence of Operation Warp Speed was revealed publicly.

Berlin gave the German company $445 million in an agreement in September to help accelerate the vaccine by building out manufacturing and development capacity in its home market.

What the U.S. did, meanwhile, was commit to buying hundreds of millions of vaccines in advance to ensure Americans were among the first in line if it clinches an emergency-use authorization or approval from the FDA. The Trump administration agreed in July to pay almost $2 billion for 100 million doses, with an option to acquire as many as 500 million more, once that clearance comes.

As part of that agreement, the U.S. gets to decide who gets the vaccine first, and will work with the company on logistical support. While most vaccine front-runners that have been tapped by Warp Speed will distribute their doses through a government partnership with McKesson Corp., Pfizer is handling its own delivery of its products. The company has designed reusable containers that can keep the doses at ultracold temperatures, and is organizing trucks and flights to move them.

Operation Warp Speed is credited with speeding along several other vaccine programs, including one from Moderna Inc.that uses similar technology to Pfizer’s and could produce trial data later this month. The Trump administration’s rapid-vaccine operation, led by the Health and Human Services Department, the Defense Department, and other agencies, could well prove to be the reason many Americans get a vaccine in 2021, even if it’s not made by Pfizer.

Some Republicans, including Donald Trump Jr. and Texas Senator Ted Cruz, questioned the timing of Pfizer’s release of its positive data on Monday, almost a week after the presidential election -- with the implication that the information could’ve changed the outcome and tipped the scales toward President Donald Trump, who lost to former Vice President Joe Biden.

Pfizer said on Oct. 27, a week before Election Day, that it hadn’t met the threshold for positive cases that would’ve allowed it to report the data. After that, it revised its trial protocols to raise that threshold higher, after consulting with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on what would be acceptable to gain approval. The FDA has been under pressure from scientists to set tough standards for a vaccine so that Americans will feel it has been rigorously vetted and is safe to use.

If Pfizer hadn’t raised its threshold in response to the FDA’s recommendations, it’s possible it could’ve hit the lower bar of 32 positive cases before the Nov. 3 election. But it’s unclear when the trial hit that number. The company didn’t find out it had surpassed the new, revised threshold of 62 positive cases until Sunday.

All along, Pfizer’s top executives have attempted to quell notions that it has been influenced by political players.

Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla has repeatedly said that the drug giant has avoided taking taxpayer dollars for research and development purposes.

“I wanted to liberate our scientists from any bureaucracy,” Bourla said in an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sept. 16. “When you get money from someone, that always comes with strings. They want to see how we are growing to progress, what types of moves you are going to do. They want reports. I didn’t want to have any of that.”

“Basically I gave them an open checkbook so that they can worry only about scientific challenges, not anything else. And also, I wanted to keep Pfizer out of politics, by the way,” Bourla added.

Pfizer CEO’s Jewish Past Inspired Vaccine WorkFamily of top pharmaceutical leader Albert Bourla miraculously survived the Holocaust in Salonika, Greece

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla is generally credited with driving the company to develop its COVID vaccine in record time.

Albert Bourla, who as chairman and CEO of Pfizer pharmaceutical company helped develop the lifesaving COVID vaccine, owes much to the valiant efforts of others to save the lives of Greek Jews during the Holocaust.

During an online discussion Thursday sponsored by The Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York, Bourla described how his mother and father were among the very few to survive the Nazi occupation of Salonika, the ancient Greek city where he was born.

Of the more than 50,000 Jews who lived in Salonika, only about 2,000 survived World War II. Speaking to interviewer Robert Krulwich, a former NPR radio journalist, Bourla said that his father and uncle – two brothers – escaped the initial roundup in the Greek city and escaped to Athens.

The parents of Pfizer executive Albert Bourla were among only 2,000 of Salonika’s once-thriving Jewish community to survive the Holocaust.

The police chief in Athens, Angelos Evert, they learned, was clandestinely issuing fake IDs which non-Jewish names to thousands who were desperate to escape the transports to Auschwitz. It was a moral act rooted in the efforts of the Greek Orthodox church leaders to protect the Jews of the country. Not only did the two men get new papers but they got a job and worked for two years in a city that was filled with Nazi soldiers.

“The people that gave them the fake ID,” Boula related, “they also found them a job in the Red Cross warehouse. That was a full-time job. But they were not getting paid. But they had access to food.”

The woman who was later to become Bourla’s mother was also saved in miraculous circumstances.  According to Bourla, she was about to be executed by the Nazis along with a number of other Salonika Jews. She was lined up against a brick wall facing a machine gun just a few feet away when she and another woman were picked up by two Nazi soldiers with an order for her release, and put on a truck.

“And as the truck was leaving the place,” Bourla said, “they heard the sound of the machine guns. And it was, for me, unreal. But everybody else was dying and they were sitting there just three minutes ago.”

Her freedom had been bought by a bribe paid by her wealthy non-Jewish brother-in-law who had personally followed up with Salonika’s top Nazi SS officer to make sure she would survive.

Beginning in 1943, most of the community’s Jews were transported to the death camps in Poland. Despite the brave efforts by the Greek Orthodox archbishop in Athens to save them, the community that had existed for over 2,000 largely came to an end.

Three of Bourla’s brothers miraculously survived, and one-by-one they found each other in the old city.  The reunion began with a scribbled note to one of the men, according to Bourla.

Archbishop Damaskinos Papandreou, leader of the Greek Orthodox Church seen on this Greek stamp, led the efforts to save Greek Jews from the Holocaust.

“They gave him an address. When he rang the bell, they opened the door and suddenly they see the brother that they thought is dead. And of course, they hug and kiss and he says, ‘I’m the only one. Everybody’s dead.’ And then a third one came back. That gave them hope that maybe others will come back. Unfortunately, they didn’t. But we were already an extremely lucky family to have three of the family members that went to Auschwitz coming back.”

According to Bourla, many of those who survived went to Palestine or America or to Athens, Greece, to begin a new life. Bourla’s father at one point showed his son a visa that he had received to immigrate to America, but he stayed in Salonika, met and married his mother Sara and raised his family there.

Bourla was educated at the university in Salonika and after graduation, joined Pfizer in Greece to begin his steady climb through the executive ranks of the multinational corporation.

This year’s virtual lighting of the Chanukah candles at Israel’s embassy in Washington, D.C., was led by Albert Bourla.

During Thursday’s interview he said he owed his many accomplishments and his recent success to the lesson he learned from his parents. They emphasized the importance of living a positive life even if the past is filled with so much darkness.

“But they never spoke to me about revenge. They never told us that you should hate those that did that to us. The way that their stories were always ended were a celebration of life. ‘Look at us. We’re alive. We were almost dead and now we are alive. Life is wonderful.’”

Bourla, who could have dwelled only on his Jewish past, said he has always looked to his Jewish future.

“What is important is that we move on. We feel proud for our heritage. We demand the respect of the ‘other,’ but we are moving on.”
