Rantau Abang

Rantau Abang (Dungun) is about 56 km south of Kuala Terengganu, the beach is one of the main nesting areas for sea turtles, and one of only six in the world to be visited by the giant leatherback from months of May to September. There, visitors lay in wait quietly from midnight to dawn to watch giant leatherback turtles laying eggs.  The turtles lumbering slowly on the white sandy beaches to lay eggs is a memorable sight.  These giant turtles, up to 2.5 m in length and sometimes weighing more than 375 kg is indeed a phenomenal sight to behold.

Make a visit to the hatchery centre, and find out more about the conservation and protection of these rare species.  The Leatherback Turtles have probably been inhabiting the beach at Rantau Abang since ancient times.  An old malay legend tells of Batu Penyu (Turtle Rock) that lies submerge off the cost of Rantau Abang which explains why turtles are attracted to nest here.

1
Besides the turtle, Rantau Abang is also known for its white, sandy and rocky beaches such as Teluk Bidara and Tanjong Jara that suitable for relaxation, picnicking, sunbathing and swimming.  Walking around the beaches at Rantau Abang in the night is an exhilarating experience with the great round moon casting and traces of shimmering path on the calm sea from the horizon up to the shore.  Coconut palms lean silhouetted by the moonlight and towering sand bunkers are found along this stretch of beach.

Terengganu is famous for her numerous waterfalls and rapids. Chemerong Waterfall, situated 30 kilometres away from Bandar Al Muktafi Billah Shah and it thunders magnificiently down a 305 metres slope. The Chemerong Waterfall offers yet untouched, diversed riches of nature and wildlife. With its basic facilities at its base, the jungle trekking to the waterfall offers an adventure not to be forgotten. Worth the effort, the coolness and the thundering sound of the waterfall soothes the most weary travellers.

Rantau Abang Recreation Forest is a lowland forest between the sea and swamps, presents of wildlife especially monkeys.  Forest treks through research plots.

How to get there : :stp:
You can get a taxi or by catching the Dungun bound bus at Kuala Terengganu's central bus station

TOP DIVE SITE IN MALAYSIA

In it self an adventure, Terengganu offers more to the visitors. Dotting the horizon of the open sea, lies her various islands, Terengganu's best kept secrets. Every island is gazette as a marine park. A picturesque panorama of rugged hilly outcrops, large green surroundings, giant grey eroded boulders, towering cliff stand in contrast to an other scene : crystal clear green water, colourful coral gardens-teeming with movement and long wide stretches powdery white sandy beaches. A magical world of peaceful solitude, the islands await.

The state of Terengganu is blessed with some of the most beautiful islands with the finest diving sites on the east coast. Pulau Perhentian is the northernmost island followed by Pulau Lang Tengah, Pulau Redang, Pulau Bidong, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Tenggol towards the south.

The healthy coral growth and abundant fish life owe their existence to the enforcement and conservation programs of the Department of Fisheries.

Fringing reefs are a blend of hard corals species with patches of dendronephthya soft corals, whip corals and sponges growing on boulders. Seascape terrain is either gentle slopes or plunging
granite boulders, with most dive sites accessible by boat. Currents around the reefs are usually manageable, with the submerged reefs washed by slightly stronger currents. Mooring buoys mark most popular dive sites around the Marine Park islands.

THE OLDEST TRADITIONAL BOAT MAKING IN MALAYSIA

The boat makers of Terengganu (Pulau Duyung) have always been famed for their skills in building traditional boats that withstand the test of time. Their acquired skills are passed from older generations. The building of traditional boats does not require plans or blueprint, which is something unique, yet still capable of injecting intricate details and great precision into their works. Today this boat makers and their traditional Malay craftwork are still surviving and continue to be a part of Terengganu's rich and vibrant heritage of arts and crafts.

Bukit Puteri

Bukit Puteri is situated at the mouth of Terengganu River. It covers an area of about 658 hectares and the height is about 200 meters from the sea level. Bukit Puteri was built to defend the Rulers of Terengganu from attacks by the enemies. Bukit Puteri is easily accessible as there are steps leading to the top. Bukit Puteri was said to have originated as a place of residence for Puteri Bunian. However, the princess left Bukit Puteri when the local residents borrowed her cutlery and did not return them to her. According to legend, this hill was opened by a chieftain from Johor named Tuk Raja Menteri who came to Terengganu to install Sultan Zainal Abidin I as the first Sultan of Terengganu.
During the year 1830, there was a struggle for power among the two royalty of Terengganu that is, Tengku Mansur, the Sultan of Terengganu who was conferred the title of Sultan Mansur Shah II and Tengku Umar, the Yang Di pertuan Besar. Tengku Umar had built a fort at the top of Bukit Puteri for defence. This fort was built of bricks and cemented with honey, lime and egg white. However Bukit Puteri was captured by Sultan Mansur Shah II and Tengku Umar was forced to flee to Besut. Bukit Puteri then came under the control of Sultan Muhammad I who ascended to the throne when Sultan Mansur Shah II passed away. However, Sultan Mahmmud was not able to defend Bukit Puteri when it was attacked by Tengku Umar army. Finally, Tengku Umar recaptured Bukit Puteri again.

A few historical artifacts still exists on Bukit Puteri till this present day. Among them are a big bell, cannon, a flag pole, light house, graves and a defence wall. However, long time ago there were many cannons at Bukit Puteri. The cannons were believed to have originated from Spain, Portugal and the Malay States and were given names such as Seri Jamlor, Seri Buih, Seri Johor and Laila Majnun. The bell that still exists today was built during the reign of Sultan Zainal Abidin III in the year 1908. The bell was made from yellow copper, the circumference and height of the bell were 228 centimeters and the weight was 175 kilograms. The bell was sounded when there were rampage, fire or enemies attacking the state. It was believed that the bell was guarded by a boy from the royal family. The boy job was to sound the bell if any emergency or natural disasters occurred.

A cave known as Gua Puteri can also be found here. It was used as a place to keep the gun powder, stone and iron bullets. The flag pole that is on top of Bukit Puteri was used to raise the royal flag when there were any royal ceremonies held. The weight of the flag pole was around 18 meters high. The lighthouse on the peak of Bukit Puteri functioned as a guide for fishermen and sailors that siles into Kuala Sungai Terengganu. During the reign of Tengku Umar, he built a palace called the Green Palace at the foot of Bukit Puteri but was burned down in 1882. He built a new palace near the site of the Green Palace and was named Istana Maziah which still exit until today.

Nowadays, Bukit Puteri is used as a firing range for cannon when royal ceremonies are held. Besides that, Bukit Puteri has been developed into a tourist attraction.

Istana Maziah

lstana Maziah is believed to have been constructed during the reign of Sultan Zainal Abidin Ill. It was built in 1897 to replace the lstana Hijau which was burned down during World War II. Located next to Bukit Puteri, it is the venue for royal birthdays, weddings, conferment of titles and receptions for local and foreign dignitaries. A product of the blend between splendid modern and traditional architecture, it is also well-known as one of Malaysia's cultural attractions.

Kuala Terengganu

Kuala Terengganu has grown tremendously since the discovery of oil. For most travellers, the favourite part of K.T. is definitely chinatown. A row of pre-war chinese shophouses filled with familiar scents of the past- old fusty rooms with cardboard boxes full of unwanted bric-a-bracs, aged documents piled up high in the corner with a lingering faint smell of dampness.
A few of the shophouses have been taken over by island resort operators such as Redang Reef Resort and Square Point Resort. But many of the premises are still maintained by the original owners. If you get a chance to snoop around, the back of the shop extends out onto the river, which opens an entirely different scenario from the bustling street. Here, you may be able to spot the fishing boats coming back from a day's fishing and the usual daily routine of river life. Looking across the river, you can see a throbbing fishing village with women going about their daily chores. This is Seberang Takir.

There are also several batik boutiques along the way and a couple of shops selling art pieces which includes reprints of prints painted by a well known local artist from Dungun, Chang Fee Ming. Apart from the resort operators, many of the shops are closed by 5.30pm and most do not open on Fridays.

Central Market

At the end of Jalan Bandar (Bandar Road) is Central Market. This 2 storey square building is the hub of K.Terengganu. The ground floor is bustling with the haggling of vendors selling everyday needs. Fresh fish such as trevally goes for RM10 a kilo. Women dressed in colourful, vibrant tudungs (head scarf) and baju (malay top and long skirt) selling grain, fruits and sundry items. Shops selling brassware, batik items, books, local medicine. On the top floor, there are more shops selling a great selection of baju, scarves, songket- handwoven cloth, batik clothes. Don't worry if you don't have cash with you, many of them accept credit cards (mastercard, visa).
There are also a number of shops selling colourful malay and indonesian cakes(kuih). Daintily wrapped in banana leaves, the 'dodol' is a strange tasting candy. It may take a bit of getting use to for first-timers - it's goo-ey in texture, is made from coconut and is extremely sweet. The other local must-have is the 'serunding'. This is usually sprinkled on rice or on the vegetable/meat dishes. Beef, chicken or lamb pieces are finely grated, fried in a helping of hot oil and generously seasoned with red hot chilli peppers. Serunding goes great with bread too. Try it only if you can take really spicy food.

Occasionally, travelling medicine men are seen peddling their wares on the side lanes. Talking through their microphones, they entertain interested crowds with fancy concoctions for all sorts of illnesses bottled in fancy containers- sometimes throwing in personal demonstrations for added effect.
