Fleursza,
Kero perasan kat your art books collection tu ada satu buku ttg PAPIER MACHE.
I'm interested to know more about that craft.
I pun ada jugak buat papier mache...just for fun.Lagipun  ...

Hi Kero,

Sorry sebab lambat reply, masuk sekejap2 je..

Nanti I buka thread tu... sekarang ni I sebuk mengulangkaji sebab malam esok ada exam..

I simpan buku2 sebegitu krn kadang2 my friend minta I buat demonstrasi aktiviti2 seni kat sekolah diorang.

I selalu cuba tolak dgn alasan I bukan berbakat sgt dlm bidang seni...

My friend cakap... kalo jemput artis yg bagus pun... mesti pelajar2 tak boleh nak ikut.. ternganga gitu he he he

Betul juga...

Aktiviti2 santai sebegini bukan shj pelajar2 yg suka... yg dewasa pun suka sebab kita have fun bila melakukannya.

ms flu...

thanks!.... well...i must be frank... don't quite like the style of your professor's paintings... too 'pop art' to me...  mesti dia marah if you tell him this!!

I don't mind abstract art... and i like very much awang damit's and latif mohiddin's abstract expressionist styles... tapi somehow... i can't see the originality or uniqueness of it... ibrahim hussein's fine wavy lines styles apa ke nama nye saya tak tau... is not my cup of tea too...

i'm dying to love malaysian artists...tapi i'm still searching...yes... please let us know if there are any exhibitions at uitm or other art colleges... i want to see new artists...

by the way... a few months back i bouhgt one DVD (2 discs) on picasso... from one of those dvd shps at lido near holiday inn in beijing... it is an excellent documentary on him... i don't know that he was such a fine artist when he was in his early teens...his impressionistic paintings and figure drawings (copied from classics) were trully beautiful... and this was when he was around 14 or so....

I'm struck by the similarity of chandi perambanan near Jogjakarta with angkor wat....at first glance.
Many people know about Borobodur - the massive buddhist structure about an hrour's drive from jogja but less people know about the complex of chandi at perambanan a mere 17 km away ...i saw it during late in the evening in bad weather but despite this, it still looked very impressive....

both angkor wat and this chandi were hindu temple complexes and both have many similarities to my untrained eyes including the sculptures (bas relief) on the walls.

Here are some pictures for comparison

1) Perambanan chandi

2) Angkor wat

3) here's a bas relief of a dancer at perambanan

4) and here's one from angkor

5) and here's from borobodur

6) and here's borobodur from far

7) and near - a buddha is enclosed in each of this structure

I'm quite fascinated by the  current storm generated by the MAS purchase of art to 'enhance the corporate image'....RM1.55 Million for 3 paintings are actually very very cheap in the art world and you can NEVER get wolrd class standard of art for that amount even for just one let alone three paintings.

So, I think it's unfair to berate MAS for attempting to inject a bit of 'culture' to it's corporate image.
I haven't seen the art referred to until today when NST printed 2 of the 3 controversial pictures. And now here's the interesting part. I am not an art expert by any stretch of imagination but I happen to like this genre of paintings very2  much....In fact my favorite paintings are the 17th /18th century dutch & flemish still life and in addition those still life by chardin and Fantin La Tour of france.....

now, unfortunately artist names were not mentionded for  these two paintings shown in today's NST (page 2 Dec 22 05) ...but they are certainly not from the great and well known  17th century still life masters suh as Jan David de Heem, Willem Claez Heda, or willem Kalf etc....(anyway these painters' price would be in the region of at least 5-10 Million RM per picture )....

the painting with the lobster looks decidedly unrefined and even the one with the musical instrument looked awkward....i wouldn't consider these two paintings 'good' and can really uplift the corporate image of MAS....

for 1.5 Million MAS could do a lot better if they were to buy LOCAL paintings.... this in addition will also create a better nationalistic pride and can truly represent a truly Malaysian corporate image...
There are so many good relatively wellknown malaysian artists out there...latiff mohiddin, ibrahim husin etc....why not buy these??

and by the way I've stopped using MAS as far as i can on international flights since early last year...and now i'm accumulating frequent flyers points more with Krissflyer (singapore than Enrich ( Mas)...

why i'm not nationalistic you may ask...

Here's why...

1) quality for money
If you have a short international flights to say ho chi minh or manila, more often tha not mas will only use a small aircraft like boeing 737 like the ones used internally to fly from KL to KB!!!
obviously this aircraft don't have too many facilities like TV screen for each seat...

Compared to singapore airlines... go anywhere and you get full service, tv for each person even on economy, interactive games etc...

2) service
mas is always saying that they give good service....NOT true... their stewards and stewardesses  when not doing porn videos('adegan peramugari yang melampau and all that) were sometimes not too professional.... being a muslim i always request 'seafood' on my flights by default....while other airlines always make a point to  ask & confirm if I actually want seafood , mas not only NEVER ask but just pretend like i have not requested anything and dish out whatever fares they have  like usual...

3) hypocricy??

i always get very angry when mas stewards /stewardess talk to me in english first... and not good english at that too, sometimes... we are a malaysian airline, BM is the first language, if they see orang melayu they should be proud enough to speak to us in bahasa first!

also, i always notice they put the malay language papers at the BOTTOM of the trolley. Although I DETEST Utusan Malaysia and the like, being Malaysian, I'd like to see these malay papers given due respect and put on top instead of the bloody chinese papers...

but these damned mas people are too bloody stupid to realize that they are showing disrespect to their own national language....

4) food...

mas food on economy is terrible

5) entertainment and magazines

mas in flight magazine 'going places' is the worst in the region even compared to say Indonesian  "Garuda' , Thai kenari or singapore kris... etc...

now here's the most EMBARRASING thing about mas...

lately (judging fom my last couple of international flights)  MAs has stopped issuing headphones!..to add insult to injury there will be an announcement saying to the efect that..."since the movie we're showing shortly does not involve dialogue, no headphones are neccessary!"... and then they'll show a stupid mr bean or three stooges or something!... how stupid can this be!...even if it's true that there is no dialogue...there are still background music and canned laughter to create the right ambiance to the story!!...

in short,  nobody in the right mind would want to use mas if they can help it....

Since i get to talking about dutch 17th century still life, might as well talk a bit more....
not many people i realize these days know about the sensual and hyper realistic 17th century still life from dutch and flemish region.

If you happen to travel to Europe or US, You can see some fine examples in some famous museums like National art gallery (london) Rijk museum (Amsterdam ) etc...keep a look out for these!!

These paintings are very2 beautiful and sensual...very detailed and realistic even to the point of making flies and dew drops look super real...but the paintings are not just to give mere sensual visual pleasures... many of the paintings have hidden meanings... and most are grouped under the category 'vanitas'...

VanitasDefinition copied from Rijkmuseum website)

Vanitas is related to the word vanity and to transience. The term refers to the opening verse of Ecclesiastes in the Latin Bible 'Vanitas vanitatum, omnia vanitas': vanity of vanities, all is vanity. Seventeenth-century Dutch paintings often feature symbols of transience, especially still lifes. Skulls, hourglasses, extinguished candles and similar elements refer to the evanescence of existence. Vanitas paintings are intended to remind the viewer of how short life is and that it should be lived with due regard to God's laws.

here are some examples:-

1) flower paintings...i think girls will like these....

Jan van huysum ....i have a (cheap) copy of this...bought from ho chi minh

bosscheart

willem van aelst

2) fish and 'games'

abraham van beyeren

willem van aelst

3) laden table

Abraham van beyeren..have a copy of this...from ho chi minh again

pieter claesz

4) Vanitas

"rembrandt circle"

pieter claesz

5) musical instruments

italian 18th century

6) Chardin ...french 18th century...I have a copy of this..from ho chi minh again!!!

Yup, cherries... pastel by my housemate.

Im still in working to transfer some furnitures to the house.  Most of them old furnitures.

I only stay there for one year until my study finish.  Then my family members will use it from time to time as a stop place in transit to have solat, rest etc .

Nice of u to share the knowledge here, Mr GB.

I memang minat pd kesenian kuil2 lama.

I berharap dpt menjelajah tempat2 seni yg menarik bila I tua nanti. Of course, di samping beribadat dan menikmati kebesaran Allah swt.

Oh ya, terdpt kuil Hindu yg terbesar di Malaysia (mungkin Asia Tenggara) berhampiran Teluk Intan.  Sekiranya berkesempatan I akan cuba ambil gambar. InsyaAllah.

Dlm perniagaan politik memang ada.  Imej dan wang menjadi taruhan.  Ttg kontroversi paintings yg nak jaga imej korporat MAS itu... I rasa mengapa tidak?

Painting boleh dianggap spt ketul emas.  Ia ada nilai dlm pasaran antarabangsa.

Bagaimana pun sekiranya syarikat dah rugi jualkan shj ia utk membantu syarikat.  No big deal.

I juga amat meminati realistic painting.  Bagi I, seni itu haruslah bersesuaian dgn kehalusan dan ketelitian hasil ciptaannya.

Artis Malaysia yg I suka... Hoessien Enas, Amron Omar, Annuar Rashid, Raja Shahriman dll

Hmmm... byk yg boleh diperkatakan ttg paintings yg en GB kemukakan.  I setuju ttg sensual tu he he he he

puan fluerzsa...

mengapa tunggu TUA sebelum nak menjelajah dunia ?? india is a great country... two years' back i went to New Delhi, took a train from new delhi to culcutta and another long train journey from culcutta to hyderabad...saw all the major sites...kutb minar, taj mahal, red fort, golconda , museums ....the works...

one day i'm hoping to go to benares and also may be visit that famous temple full of erotic sculptures somewhere in central india ..i think...

....i think i have the best of working life at the moment... at least since the past 8 years and i hope there will be many more years to come...i basically have a  budget that i can do whatever is reasonable with it...and i can basically tailor my travel (and job) to my interests....which is  travel and see the world...so the world is really a village to me these past years..at least some part of it...and i can not thank Allah enough for this ....

Hmmm... I already have been to a few oversea countries after school years, so I will died in peace now he he he he

Now, there r lots of things to do with my time n moneys.  Then just have a little saving only for rainy day.

Most of my oversea friends r males, so I need muhrim to visit them. Then, I dont get any proposal from my man yet.  Better not push man, just being slow n get ready he he he he

Nampak kehidupan en GB mcm best aje, ada peluang pergi sana sini... itu rezeki masing2.  Ukur baju di badan sendiri.... Bagus gak en GB kongsi pengalaman di sini, so I ada info tempat2 mana nak pergi nanti.

InsyaAllah... rasa nak berkarya bila dah mula kerja nanti.  Dlm kepala dah ada konsep/ identiti bg karya2 I nanti.  Konsep alam dan pemikiran.  Akan pergi melancong bila ekonomi lebih stabil... bila kereta habis bayar...Akan ambil gambar dan buat lakaran.   Kumpul buku seni.... Wah... mcm William Turner la pulak...

Sebab I bukan born artist...tgh belajar lakaran dr my best friend.  Beliau sedang buat tesis, so jarang jumpa.

Actually, dr kecil I berpotensi dlm bidang penulisan.  Buat karangan mesti dpt markah tinggi.  Suka cipta poetry... Hmmm... naper la tak ambil jurusan sastera dulu...  Dont know why, sekarang ni bila nak buat cerpen je mesti tersangkut... no confident at all...  wal hal mcm2 idea ada dlm kepala ni...

U know what... cadang nak buat tesis ttg penulisan seni. So berpeluang buat kajian ttg artis2 di Malaysia. Sebaliknya pihak universiti wajibkan pula tajuk yg berkaitan pendidikan.  Semester ni mula disertasi n buat tesis.  Boring tul nak pergi sekolah buat kajian.
