the Istana Batak at Medan is quite artsy with its colourfull walls...what's so special
the non-usage of nails on it...what's not so special, those people used to be cannibals...
creepy...

Ms Seribu!

That's a timely posting regarding Istana Batak in Medan! sounds interesting....
In fact if everything goes ok (meaning no  urgent office works screw up my plan)...I'll be going to Medan this 25 Sept!.... and I may visit this istana?...so if you have more info I appreciate it very much if you can post it here!

Actually i'll just stop over at Medan... I'll fly from Medan to Aceh!...I've volunteered to do some volunteer work to help the poor Tsunami victims for one week there... and I'm quite interested to see what it looks like now after almost one year has gone by...and god willing, though I'm not much of a muslim, I hope to offer my Solat in Masjid Baithrrahman...

Just came back from Yangon last week and bought a few more MYINT TZI (pron " min chi"). This painter is in his fifties and sell his paintings in the Scott Market (Bogyoke Market) ..a very famous market selling all kind of souvernirs and cheap stuff...much like our pasar seni...if you love jade you'll go crazy here as there are stalls upon stalls selling trinkets and jade jewellery... I'm very stupid about gem stones so I don't buy any...

I like myint tzi's impressionistic style and his to me are among the few paintings that i like from this place...

Here are some of the paintings...that i bought .. you need to sit back far from the computer screen to see  the picture better...

1) I don't know if this is a copy...reminds me of a  a van gogh painting!

2) another small painting by myint tzi

3) another

4) more myint tzi

5) another river scene

6 This one is not myit tzi...but I like the subject and a very good realistic painting...

7) and lastly, here is the family that sold the paintings...a very nice family...note the husband is wearing a "longhi" everybody in yangon wears this...nobody wears pants....

some info that I can give out...if my memories serve me right...

The Istana Batak is actually situated in Pulau Samosir. You have to ferry across Danau Toba to get there厀hich was a living ART itself卼he scenery was really breath-taking

Ms Fleurzsa;

Thanks for the photo of your bookshelf... boleh tak ambil gambar close up ...I'm quite interested to know what are the books you have....

nak sambung sikit pasal lukisan bali....thread sayangdiku;

ada dua orang mat salleh yang famous dari bali yang lukisan2 mereka sekarang mencecah ratusan malah mungkin jutaan ringgit singapore (dlm christie's auction di s'pore..or is it sotheby?..but never mind details...)
mereka ia lah walter spies dan Le Mayeur....mereka ni berada di bali in early fifties kalau tak silap...

Spies' paintings are very much balinese  in style (Batuan/ubud traditional paintings) tapi mayeur tetap degan western style...rumah le mayeur sekarang dah jadi musuem milik kerajaan Indonesia, terletak di sanur beach...famous for people watching sunrise....

kalau anda menuju ke ubud atau pasar Sukawati (tempat boleh beli barang2 murah termasuk lukisan2) anda mesti jumpa signboard ke museum ni....

ini beberapa pictures saya ambil baru2 ni....

1) Sanur beach

2) Painting  of ni polok , le mayeur's wife....when he came to bali he was in his early fifties and he took  15 yr old ni polok ( a legong dancer) as a model..and he later married her when she was 18...lucky *****...

3)ni polok

GB, here r some with the close up.  I exclude books for teacher n  student references.  I got lots of photostated assignments on overseas n  Malaysian artists discussion.  They r really precious bcz books that discuss Malaysian artist r really rare.
