Tickets for next month's three X Japan shows at Tokyo Dome are said to have sold out in a matter of seconds. Most of the 150,000 tickets for the hugely anticipated March 28-30 shows went on sale at 10am yesterday. Demand has been heavy on ticket sources such as the official fan site of group leader Yoshiki and sites such as J Rock Revolution aimed at overseas fans. Through the pre-sale, Japan Zone was fortunate enough to get hold of four tickets for the March 28 "X Japan - Night of Destruction" show. The group performed together last October for the first time in ten years, shooting a live video for the song "I.V." on the rooftop of the Aqua City mall in Tokyo.

He may not have been in the crowd to see his old school make their first appearance at Koshien, but X Japan leader Yoshiki made sure that just about the whole school was there. Chiba Prefecture representatives Awa High School won their debut at the national high school spring invitational baseball championship on Saturday. And they were cheered on by most of their schoolmates, thanks in part to a donation from Yoshiki that paid for 15 busloads of students to make the trip halfway across the country. The spring and summer tournaments are held every year at the venerable Koshien stadium in Hyogo Prefecture, which is also home to the Hanshin Tigers. Another victory for Awa in the second round on Thursday would set the right mood for X Japan's long-awaited comeback concerts in Tokyo this weekend.

SUGIZO to fill in for hide at X Japan concerts
Wed, March 26, 2008 (1:37am EDT)

It has been confirmed that LUNA SEA's SUGIZO will be participating in the upcoming X Japan reunion concerts, on March 28-30 at the Tokyo Dome. He will be taking on the role of guitarist, filling in for deceased member hide.

SUGIZO and Yoshiki have worked together before as part of the supergroup SKIN, along with Gackt and Miyavi.

However, SUGIZO is not the only guitarist who will participate in the concerts. Both Richard Fortus (of Guns N' Roses) and Wes Borland (formerly of Limp Bizkit) are playing, and more guests are planned.

X Japan announces Paris show in July
Sat, March 29, 2008 (7:16pm EDT)

The first of X Japan's three reunion concerts took place on Friday. Before the second concert on Saturday, the band held an urgent press conference to announce that they have finalized plans for a performance in Paris on July 5 (possibly at Japan Expo). According to the band, they hope to draw a crowd of about 20,000 people.

Full details have not yet been publicized, but they did mention that video footage of guitarist hide will be played during the show, similar to the reunion concerts.

Yoshiki also explained at the press conference that the 2-hour-20-minute delay for the first show was caused by equipment problems. And although Yoshiki fainted after the band's 8th song on Friday, he was in fine condition for Saturday's performance, which started on time and was completed with a full 13-song set, including a drum solo by Yoshiki that reportedly lasted 20 minutes.

The weekend's three shows at Tokyo Dome are now part of the X Japan legend. The hugely anticipated reunion after ten years, and without charismatic guitarist hide, was full of drama and some fan disappointment. The set list for Friday's opening concert - which Japan Zone attended - had 16 songs but the band ended up playing just nine in a 1-hour, forty-five-minute show, less time than the more than two-hour delay that preceded it. The delay was said to be due to extended rehearsals and technical problems, mainly with a

X Japan suspends international tour due to Yoshiki's health
Sun, June 8, 2008 (5:46pm EDT)

Yesterday, it was reported that musician Yoshiki has suddenly canceled a scheduled visit to Korea and Taiwan, but the reason was unknown at the time. Today, it was learned that Yoshiki is currently suffering from some health problems, and as a result, X Japan's international concerts have been indefinitely postponed.

Yoshiki has been suffering from chronic disc herniation (also known as a "slipped disc") in his neck and is also experiencing tendinitis. For several years, he has been medically advised to wear a corset during his concerts to help address the problem, though he disregarded that advice for X Japan's reunion concerts at the Tokyo Dome in March. Despite suffering a separate injury during the first of those shows, he continued his energetic performances, and at the hide memorial event in May, he re-triggered the herniated disc.

According to one source, Yoshiki is at home in Los Angeles receiving medical treatment and is mostly immobilized. The extent of the injury this time is said to be serious. Yoshiki has previously had to take extended time off due to his condition, spending half a year in recovery in 1990 and nine months in 1996.

X Japan had scheduled concerts for Paris (July 5), Taiwan (August 2), and New York (September 13), with additional shows being planned. However, ticket sales have now been stopped. It is not yet known if and when the shows will be rescheduled.

X Japan vocalist Toshi spoke on a radio show yesterday about the recent postponement of the band's world tour. As we reported here yesterday, the cause is said to be the worsening medical condition of drummer and leader Yoshiki. But Toshi said that the problems were really not something to worry about and had been maybe a bit exaggerated. He said he plans to give a more formal announcement today, including details of a personal project.

With X Japan once again forced to take a hiatus, vocalist Toshi (42) announced a new band project yesterday. The full lineup has yet to be named, but "Toshi with T-Earth" will include guitarists Toya and Jun and will be produced by Masaya, the man often described as a cult leader and responsible for Toshi leaving X Japan in 1997. The two collaborated extensively on a mix of new age and rock music during the decade up to X Japan's recent reunion. With the group's world tour plans on hold, the new "eco hard rock" band will perform shows in Japan. They will play eight shows in six cities, starting at Zepp Nagoya on August 12 and ending at Zepp Tokyo on September 3 & 4.
