Just some info to share...

when the ships of the Spanish Empire reached the shores of the New World almost five centuries ago, they brought with them a religion, a culture-and a language.

Today the Spanish empire is no more but with the exception of Brazil and some of the countries around the Carribbean, speakers of the language can be found from the banks of the Rio Grande to the plains of Patagonia, at the tip of South america...

More than that, Spanish is almost a second language in major parts of the US. Many Americans are descendants of those who lived under Spanish rule in what are now the Southwestern and Western states. But they are doubtlessly outnumbered by the waves of Spanish-speaking peoples who have swept in from Puerto Rico, from Mexico and from other countries south of the border.

Indeed Time magazine refers to Spanglish as an intermediate language where American Spanish and English meet, as in 'Donde esta el vacuum cleaner?' (where is the vacuum) or you have any cerveza? (beer)...

For some people the mixture of Spanish and English has become so complete that a Spanish-speaking youngster is reported to have asked his mother 揌ow do you say ice-cream in English?

continuation....

But beware the differences between Spanish n English. Words in Spanish that may seem the same as in English can have sharply different meanings. A Boletin de Denuncia may not be a denunciation, but a traffic ticket.

An American lady, visiting a Spanish-speaking country, who says she is embarrased (me siento embarazada) can REALLY be embarrased-because she has announced instead that she is pregnant!
