Sorry no reply for a long time, busy.
Must say, I'm very dissappointed with the way Johor State Government this affair. In the news interview last Thursday (if not mistaken), they made announcement that the historian who made the discovery may be wrong in term that it may not be Kota Gelinggi.
First of all - Johor Government officials are NOT Historians. They have NOT studied (with passion) the Malay Annals (Sejarah Melayu) as did Raimy Che-Ross. Stating that Raimy maybe wrong is like belittle his effects and knowledge as historian.
Second - They should be concentrate in trying to get funding from Federal Government, NOT debate whether or not a historical fact described by a historian is correct or not.
And third - WHY is Johor State government SO STUPID to go and fight with someone who has all attention of bring its name to the history book by pronouncing that the city in question is NOT Kota Gelinggi?
As stated before, the Japanese Government and people there taken keen interest in this research because it brings them a chance to recover one of their fallen Prince.
By promoting proper exchange of information, Malaysian government could easily obtain equipments (if NOT human help from experts) from a NATION which is ONLY SECOND ADVANCED TO US IN THE WORLD.
By telling the media that the historian (Mr. Raimy) had made mistake and the city in question is not what they believe to be, Johor Government, singlehandly may have pushed the effects of discovering the city a few months (if NOT years) back.
And in History terms, that is NOT a good news. Asian Artifacts (as old as from that city which stated to be 1,200 years old) are VERY rare and VERY priced in black market. Johor Government may have given Art and History pirates (people who steal and sell this sort of things in international Black Market) so time to gather resources and plunder the city.

Anyone here knows what is a Naskhat City (as stated in last Thursday's Newspaper) is?
There are about 12 of them (I have to check their names again) and some of them, you already knew like Langkasuka, Kedah Tua dll.
Naskhat Cities are actually cities (with people around 1,000 or more) which serves as points of trade and commerce. The Bumiputeras (Malays, Orang Asli etc) used to travel from one point to another along ancient route inlands called Denai. They used as labors by traders or sometimes, does trading themselves by moving from one city to another with their cargo on their backs.
Form 5 History (for those who pass the Paper anyway) shows that Land Routes are used almost 1,000 years (even with ports like Melaka active) because it beats waiting for the tide and wind to carry cargo to and fro ports from places like Perak to Langkasuka.
Furthermore, this land routes is said to link Tanah Malaya to the famous Silk Route as stated by Professor Koh Kia Kim (Sorry, mistake in name) back in late 1980s.
Discovery of Kota Gelinggi or whatever city it maybe could be start of series of discoveries which could shape a land route which over 1,000 years old and shows clear picture of what roles the Malays had played in this land for the past 1,000 years. :hmm:
Assuming of course the current Malays ain't stupid enough to screw things up for people who interested in finding facts and history of their race. |

A team of experts including Mr. Raimy Che Ross, experts from UKM, USM, Johor Heritage Foundation, Johor Forestry Dept. and Malaysian Centre For Remote Sensing (Macres) will be launched soon to go and find this lost city (They better bring a LOT of mosque repellent. Not to mention Tiger, wild boar and Crodille repellents as well. ).
The team will be meeting next week to discuss the details. Datuk Rais told that, whether they find it or not, they MUST submit a report by August (this year). |

Attention all who is interested in news of Kota Gelinggi :
Buy today's (19/2/2005) STAR newspaper. It shows Satellite view of the area in question (where alleged Kota Gelinggi) said to exist. Macres had reveal the satellite photo for us.
The whole area of Kota Gelinggi is approximately the size of the golden triangle in Kuala Lumpur. According to Mr. Raimy, it is about the size of Bintang-KLCC and Jalan Raja Chulan area. He kept quiet about it till he get this photo to proof his claim because he feared of been riddiculed as before.
According to him, to imagine the size of the city, one had to walk along Jln Sultan Ismail from Lot 10 to Concorde Hotel, proceed along Jln Ampang to KLCC and finally to Jln Raja Chulan past KL Plaza and finally back to Lot 10.
Also ... from MY observation of the satellite photo, it seems that there is series of highway-like roads running in several directions. One of the most vivid one is a short but clear route which leading north-east toward a large body of water, probably a river or a branch. Most likely, that is the place where ships, junks and such comes and unload the cargo, and then carried to the city by workers. :hmm:
Well ... it is my observations and I'm not expert. Just making a guess here.

1,000-year-old image of temple may be that of Kota Gelanggi
BY TEOH TEIK HOONG AND AUDREY EDWARDS
PETALING JAYA: The lost city of Kota Gelanggi in Johor may be the unidentified temple shown in a 1000-year-old illustration of an unknown place in the region, a Cambridge University expert said.
R.C. Jamieson, Keeper of Sanskrit Manuscripts at the University of Cambridge, Britain, said the origin of the illustration which showed a former Buddha, Dipamkara, making a gesture of reassurance and holding a fold of his robe at his shoulder in a temple in Java had yet to be verified.
揌owever, we must bear in mind that Java then might not have been just the present island alone. At the time of The Perfection of Wisdom in 8,000 Lines (Astasahasrikaprajnaparamita) manuscript, the term encompassed Sumatra and part of the Malay peninsula.
揟he manuscript states that the image was taken around 1015AD, |

Mysterious city of black stone
BY AUDREY EDWARDS AND ZUHRIN AZAM AHMAD
KOTA TINGGI: Villagers and orang asli in this part of Johor have grown up with stories about a mysterious lost city made of black stone.
Some say they may have actually seen the city and others say they have seen artefacts from that city, which independent researcher Raimy Che-Ross claims could be the ancient lost city of Kota Gelanggi, reputed to be made of black stone.
Kampung Sri Jaya village head Hussin Md Noor, 64, said he once saw what he believed was an artefact from the city.
揑t was made out of jade and was 25cm long. It looked like a part of a stand for a decorative table. I kept it with me for about two days. That was a few years ago
HISTORY BUFF: Hussin showing several artefacts, which he said were of Chinese origin, that he had found along the Johor River.
揑t belonged to a friend of mine who was a forest ranger. He said he had obtained it during one of the trips when he brought loggers into the area, |

Ancient texts point to black stone structures
PETALING JAYA: Ancient Chinese manuscripts have indicated the existence of the lost city of Kota Gelanggi as a city of shining black stone, according to a Chinese history expert.
The city, also believed to be called Klang Kiu, was mentioned in the more than 1,000-year-old manuscript found in the book Strange Countries from the Cambridge Library Rare Books Collection, said Universiti Putra Malaysia chemical engineering Prof Dr Tan Ka Kheng who has been researching for several years.
Tan, who minors in History of Science, said the book had an illustration of a bell adorned by two Buddhas, lotus flowers and birds, which apparently existed in the city, which had a stupa-like multi-tiered structure.
揟he structure according to the book was 32 chang (each chang is 3.3m) high and they were surrounded by 300 graves, |
