PEPE REINA swiftly announced his retirement from outfield football following his brief cameo in Saturday's 3-2 defeat to Kaiserslautern.
The Liverpool keeper was forced to play 12 minutes in central midfield when second half subs Fabio Aurelio and Luis Garcia suffered injuries.
Reina almost grabbed one of the most unlikely Liverpool goals in the closing stages.
But the Spaniard admitted he now appreciates the levels of fitness required by his team-mates after suffering to get through unscathed.
"It was the only solution we had out there. I had to do it," said Reina.
"Now I know how difficult it is to play out there. You have to run a lot. I had a good chance to score, but at that moment people could see why I'm a goalkeeper.
"I've played outfield in training, but in a game it's a lot different. Now I under-stand how hard it is to score goals."
Aurelio's injury was the more serious of the two. He's been struggling with the same calf problem since he joined the club, and it worsened on Saturday.
Garcia's substitution for a neck problem was more precautionary.
Liverpool' next warm-up game is against Grasshoppers in Zurich tomorrow. |

It took a couple of days. I spoke to the gaffer and the lads here like Scott Parker, Steve Carr and Shay Given but at the end I listened to my heart. Maybe there are a lot of Liverpool supporters in Ireland saying 'why didn't you sign for us' but my heart told me to come to Newcastle United.
