Gaia Theory - 1960s

Post time 14-10-2005 10:11 AM | Show all posts |Read mode
In recent events of Catashophic events throughout the world - Katrina, Ophelia, Earthquakes etc, I put forward the Gaia Theory which was brought forward in 1960s.

You can read and agree, disagree, remain unconvinced or simply don't care. Your choice.

[Qoute]
The Earth's atmosphere was an extraordinary and unstable mixture of gases, yet I knew that it was constant in composition over quite long periods of time. Could it be that life on Earth not only made the atmosphere, but also regulated it - keeping it at a constant composition, and at a level favourable for organisms?" (1991)
[/Qoute]

"... the physical and chemical condition of the surface of the Earth, of the atmosphere, and of the oceans has been and is actively made fit and comfortable by the presence of life itself. This is in contrast to the conventional wisdom which held that life adapted to the planetary conditions as it and they evolved their separate ways."

The importance of biological processes on the planet was pointed out by the Russian scientist Vernadsky, who as early as 1929 said:

"Life appears as a great, permanent and continuous infringer on the chemical 'dead-hardness' of our planet's surface ... Life therefore is not an external and accidental development on the terrestrial surface. Rather, it is intimately related to the constitution of the Earth's crust, forms part of its mechanism, and performs in this mechanism functions of paramount importance, without which it would not be able to exist." (1929)

Is Disasters and Destruction part of Regulation of the Planet toward the Changes occuring on it's surface or is it random accorance like so many thinks it is? :hmm:

Take look at this example :

Source : http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051013/ap_on_sc/katrina_wildlife

Flocks of pelicans and the pod of dolphins spotted Monday indicate that there are fish for them to eat, he said.

Earlier in the week, the journal Environmental Science & Technology reported that tests had found the dirty floodwaters pumped out of the city may be a long-term hazard to wildlife in the lake.

"We knew Pontchartrain would heal itself," but the rate at which it seems to be doing so is a welcome surprise, Dufrechou said.

any other better theories apart from this? or any other "models" what are the flaws detecteed in this theories?

In what ways should it be better (theories) than Gaia Theory, may I ask?

Right now, this model IS the best available in Science and Technology to predict changes in the the World. Many of the predictions like El Nino had been successfully predicted and explained.

(You can find alternatives here but many not so convincing).

Note - Gaia Theory is NOT about Spiritualism and such, it is about study of Nature and its changes. It is IMPORTANT to know this because Man is destroying Nature in a very drastic ways and sooner or later, something BAD will happen to Humans.

In USA, something BAD already happening for the past few years - frequent hurricanes, tornados, irregular temperature and increase in heatwaves is directly associate with amount of pollutions generated by Americans.

In Malaysia, the amount trees and hills wiped out by Man is increasing drastically. Tragedies like Highland Tower - 1990s, is forgotten, Tsunamies which ravaged the coast in 2004 is forgotten, and increasing in Earthquake in places like KL and Penang is ignored.

Like what they say - "It's YOUR funeral". ;)

Global warming poses an enormous ethical challenge because countries that produce the least amount of greenhouse gases will suffer the most from climate change, scientists said on Wednesday.

The     World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that climate change leads to more than 150,000 deaths every year and at least 5 million cases of illness.

They are not talking about America or Africa alone here, they are talking about Asia as well.

Maybe it is about time Asians get together and take drastic steps toward those who pollutes the most of they don't clean up the act. :hmm:

;) ). Kyoto Treaty - tak tahulah gagal ke tak tetapi banyak Saintis2 menyokongnya di merata tempat di dunia. Mungkin di masa depan, penjanjian baru akan dimeterai. :hmm:

Ocean and so-called greenhouse gas levels are rising faster than they have for thousands of years, according to two reports published on Thursday that are likely to fuel debate on global warming.

Rising seas caused by global warming and other factors will have dire consequences for New Jersey, submerging sections of the state's highly developed coastline by the end of the century, according to a report released Wednesday by Princeton University.

The Atlantic Ocean, swollen by melting ice caps, could rise by up to 4 feet by the year 2100, moving the coastline 480 feet inland in a worst-case scenario, according to the study co-authored by Michael Oppenheimer, a professor of geosciences and international affairs at the university's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

That, in turn, would open the door for so-called 100-year floods occurring every five years, according to "Future Sea Level Rise and the New Jersey Coast," an 81-page report that forecasts an ominous future for the shore.

I wonder of New Jersey residents knows how to swim. :hmm:

Emissions of the gases, widely blamed by scientists for global warming, were down 5.9 percent overall in 2003 from 1990 in 40 rich nations including former Communist states.

That beat a goal of a cut of 5.2 percent by 2008-12 in the U.N.'s Kyoto Protocol, which seeks to promote cuts in the use of fossil fuel and a shift to clean energy like solar or wind power.

A long-time weather scientist who has headed the Geneva-based     World Meteorological Organization for the past two years, he said extreme heat -- often bringing severe drought -- had spread across all continents but Europe.

Europe itself -- mainly in its eastern and south-eastern regions -- had suffered both torrential rains and flooding, which also affected Bangladesh, China, New Zealand and Guyana in South America, among other areas.

"The honest answer is: we don't know if it is," he said. "A lot of research is being done, and the IPCC (the U.N.'s advisory Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) will be issuing a new report in 2007, and that could shed more light on the question."

[/Qoute]

Sigh ... when this Humans going to learn that their "sins" (what they did to the Environments) won't be going away but come right back to bite them in the rear end? :stp:

Wildfires raced through grass dried out by the region's worst drought in 50 years earlier this week, charring nearly 200 homes and killing four people in Texas and Oklahoma.

Severe drought, wind gusts of 40 mph and temperatures reaching the low 80s set the stage for the fires. Authorities believe they were mostly set by people ignoring fire bans and burning trash, shooting fireworks or throwing out cigarettes.

"Truly be careful with your activities, because people's lives are on the line," Perry said, warning that 'the state of Texas is a tinderbox."

America is going up in smoke faster than a discarded Christmas Tree down there. ;)

Unusual long and dry seasons and droughts had dried up the grasses and this set stage for fire. That and wind and you have a fast moving flame which can raze across the states.

Sigh ... When, I wonder, Americans going to learn to take care the Environment properly? :hmm:

The report, which is the result of a research project that started in 1999, concludes that Portugal will be one of the hardest hit by global warming in Europe in coming decades.

"I think the biggest impact is the risk of desertification in the interior of the south," Filipe Duarte Santos, a physics professor who oversaw the project, told Reuters.

"...The indication is less rainfall, higher temperatures, more frequent extreme events, such as droughts which will become more frequent."

Freak weather has already hit west Europe's poorest country. Last year Portugal recorded its worst drought since 1931 while this weekend snow fell in Lisbon for the first time in decades.

Last year's forest fires destroyed 325,226 hectares (803,600 acres), the second worst in history, according to a government report released on Monday.

Portugal's average maximum temperature has risen about 0.5 degree Celsius during each of the past three decades, it said.

The report covered the impact of global warming in Portugal on water resources, agriculture, fisheries, human health, energy and coastal regions.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Global warming could threaten the new Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the world's highest, within a decade, a Chinese researcher said in remarks published on Sunday.

Wu Ziwang, a frozen soil specialist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told the official Xinhua news agency his research over three decades revealed large areas of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau showed signs of shrinking, as they were frozen less of the time.

This could threaten the new railway, which is to start operations this year, Wu said.

OSLO (Reuters) - Backers of the U.N.'s Kyoto Protocol renewed their pleas to the United States on Thursday to do more to fight global warming, even though their own records are patchy in the year since the pact went into force.

"We need the full participation of all major emitting countries -- such as the United States, the world's leading economy, but also the world's leading polluter," European Commissioner Stavros Dimas said in marking the anniversary.

He warned that the world needed to strengthen action to contain global warming or would "run out of time to contain climate change." Most scientists say warming will bring a more chaotic climate with more heatwaves, droughts and floods.

NASA has said that 2005 was the warmest year at the earth's surface since records began in the 1860s. Another recent study showed that concentrations of greenhouse gases were at the highest in 650,000 years.

President George W. Bush pulled out of Kyoto in 2001, saying it would cost U.S. jobs and wrongly excluded developing nations from an overall goal of cutting industrialized nations' emissions by 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-12.

USE still don't want to follow others as leaders.

USA's forest is burning, cold weather and heat waves all over the country, 5 Hurricanes in the past 6 months and at least one City underwater - New Orleans, and the Americans STILL don't learn anything from their mistakes. ;)

GENEVA - Carbon dioxide and other so-called greenhouse gases reached record high levels in the atmosphere in 2004, the     World Meteorological Organization said Tuesday in a new report aimed at providing an annual measuring system for emissions widely blamed for global warming.

The publication of WMO's first annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin gives the scientific community worldwide data on the amount of heat-trapping gases created in the burning of fossil fuels.

"Global observations coordinated by WMO show that levels of carbon dioxide, the most abundant greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, continue to increase steadily and show no signs of leveling off," WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud said.

It would be an unbelievable record to have another season like that, that's just not very realistic," said Max Mayfield, director of the     National Hurricane Center in Miami.

But he warned that this year's hurricane season, which officially begins on June 1, might be stronger than average.

"I think everybody is going to say we're going to have an above-average season here," Mayfield told a news conference at a San Juan hotel, adding: "We don't have the numbers worked out yet."

The worst damage from Sunday night's storms occurred along a 25-mile swath of rural western Tennessee, where 23 of the deaths occurred and state troopers using dogs searched for more victims amid the rubble of brick buildings and toppled trailers.

"Most of the houses, you can't count. They're just gone," said Roy Childress, who was part of a church relief crew that was delivering food and water to survivors Monday.

The dead included an infant and the grandparents who had been babysitting him. A young couple and their two sons, ages 5 and 3, were also killed, their bodies found 800 yards from their house.

Reuters - Tue Apr 11, 4:37 PM ET
NAIROBI - Restoring wetlands and clearing poultry farms from migratory flyways could help curb the spread of bird flu by stopping wild birds from mixing with domestic fowl, a U.N.-commissioned report said on Tuesday. The clearance of wetlands due to drainage for agriculture or hydroelectric projects is forcing some wild birds on to alternative sites such as farm ponds and paddy fields, bringing them into direct contact with domestic poultry, the report said.

[/Qoute]

This is one of the direct relationship between Man and how he handles Nature. He missuse it, then Nature WILL strike back in a worse way.

Report stated that Bird Flu happens because wild birds get mix with poutry birds (which usually have lower resistance compare to birds in the wild). Which could explain why most countries which get Bird Flu deals with poutry.

Also, in Sweden, it was reported that Bird Flu was found to be cause for death for several WILD birds which settled in ponds in that country.
