Squash / World Junior Women抯 Squash Championships: Malaysian heroics end in final
By : Devinder Singh

MALAYSIA扴 good run in the World Junior Women抯 Championships in Hong Kong ended in the final when Egypt beat them 2-0 yesterday.

Malaysia, who had earlier knocked out second and third seeds England (2-1) and New Zealand (2-1), found top seeds Egypt, led by world junior champion Raneem El Weleily, too strong.

Sisters Low Wee Wern and Low Wee Nee, who had been the key players in previous matches, were unable to repeat their winning form.

Raneem, the World No 23, clinched the winning point for Egypt when she defeated Wee Wern 9-0, 9-4, 7-9, 9-6 in 35 minutes. Heba El Torky had given Egypt a 1-0 lead after subduing Wee Nee 9-1, 9-1, 9-3 in 17 minutes in the opening match.

New Zealand defeated Hong Kong 2-1 for third place.

The last time Malaysia reached a final was in 2001 in Penang where Nicol David and company finished runners-up. Malaysia lost in the quarter-finals in 2005 and 2003.

Wee Wern had earlier struggled in the individual competition where she lost in the fourth round to Egyptian Nour. But she came good in the team event to take Malaysia to the final although she failed against Raneem in their first ever meeting.

Wee Wern had defeated England抯 Victoria Lust for the winning point in the team quarter-finals and kept Malaysia抯 hopes alive in the semi-finals against New Zealand with an upset win over individual semi-finalist Joelle King.

Egypt won their third World team title following triumphs in 1999 and 2003, while Malaysia fell short in the final for the second time, after losing the 2001 final 2-1 to England.

Malaysia improved on their fifth placing in the last two championships and will still have the core of the squad, including Wee Wern, Wee Nee and Nessrine Ariffin, for the next tournament in 2009 in India.

Squash: Nafiizwan to use own savings for overseas training stint
By S. SIVABALAN

PETALING JAYA: Top national back-up men抯 squash player Nafiizwan Adnan has decided to take matters into his own hands to bring his game to a higher level.

After finding out that he can no longer improve his game at the training base in Kuala Lumpur, Nafiizwan has decided to go for a training stint in London and to take part in tournaments in Europe.

Unlike the rest of the national players based in Europe, Nafiizwan has to acquire private funding as well as use his own savings for the training stint.

National players currently based in Europe are Nicol David and Tricia Chuah in Amsterdam, Sharon Ann (Antwerp), Mohd Azlan Iskandar and Ong Beng Hee in London and they are partly or fully funded by the National Sports Council (NSC).

揟he initial plan is to spend about three to four months in London. That will cost about RM40,000 to RM50,000. I know it抯 a lot money but I have to invest to improve myself,
