1.Sejarah Bendera Persekutuan Tanah Melayu

Sejarah penerimaan Bendera Persekutuan Tanah Melayu ialah melalui perjanjian dengan Majlis Raja-Raja di mana sebuah jawatankuasa telah ditubuhkan dalam tahun 1949 untuk menimbang dan membuat perakuan berhubung dengan rekabentuk Bendera.

Satu pertandingan peringkat kebangsaan telah diadakan bagi memilih Bendera Persekutuan Tanah Melayu yang baru. Pertandingan ini diadakan oleh Majlis Perundangan Persekutuan dalam tahun 1949. Sebanyak 373 karyawan telah mengambil bahagian di mana tiga rekabentuk bendera telah terpilih ke peringkat akhir.

Rekabentuk pertama ialah lambang keris bersilang di tengah-tengah dengan dikelilingi oleh 11 bintang pecah lima.

Rekabentuk kedua hampir serupa dengan rekabentuk pertama tetapi 11 bintang pecah lima itu disusun dalam dua bulatan mengelilingi keris bersilang itu.

Rekabentuk ketiga ialah 11 jalur biru dan putih dengan bulan dan bintang berwarna kuning di bahagian tepi kiri.

Majlis Perundangan Persekutuan menjemput orang ramai memberikan pendapat kepada ketiga-tiga rekabentuk tersebut. Pendapat umum itu telah dikelolakan oleh akhbar The Malay Mail. Keputusan akhir yang disiarkan pada 29 November 1949 menunjukkan majoriti orang telah memilih rekabentuk ketiga. Rekabentuk tersebut adalah ciptaan seorang Arkitek Kerajaan di Johor iaitu En. Mohamad bin Hamzah.

Rekabentuk tersebut telah dibuat beberapa pindaan dan telah diperkenankan Mesyuarat Majlis Raja-Raja pada 22 dan 23 Februari 1950. Pada 19 April 1950, Majlis Perundangan Persekutuan telah meluluskan usul yang dibentangkan oleh Pemangku Ketua Setiausaha Negara seperti berikut:

"That in the opinion of this Council the Flag of the Federation of Malaya should be as follows:-  Eleven horizontal stripes alternately red and white in colour, the uppermost stripe being red, having a blue quarter with a cresent and eleven pointed star in yellow superimposed, the standard size of the flag to be six feet by three feet."



Rekabentuk bendera tersebut telah mendapat kelulusan King George VI pada 19 Mei 1950. Pertama kali Bendera Persekutuan Tanah Melayu dikibarkan ialah dalam satu majlis menaikkan bendera tersebut yang dianjurkan oleh Pesuruhjaya Tinggi British pada 26 Mei 1950 di perkarangan Istana Sultan Selangor dengan dihadiri oleh DYMM Raja-Raja Melayu dan Pegawai-pegawai King George VI.



2.Sejarah Bendera Malaysia (Jalur Gemilang)

Bendera Malaysia adalah berasal dari Bendera Persekutuan Tanah Melayu. Duli-Duli Yang Maha Mulia Raja-Raja Melayu dan Tuan-Tuan Yang Terutama Gabenor-Gabenor dalam satu Persidangan Majlis Raja-Raja menjelang pembentukan Malaysia telah memperkenankan rekabentuk Bendera Malaysia yang mengikut rekabentuk Bendera Persekutuan Tanah Melayu dengan pengubahsuaian pada bilangan jalur-jalur dan bintang pecah 14 bagi menunjukkan 14 buah negeri baru bagi Persekutuan Malaysia.

Percantuman Sabah, Sarawak dan Singapura dengan Persekutuan Tanah Melayu telah melahirkan sebuah negara baru - Malaysia. Bendera Malaysia telah dikibarkan dengan rasminya di seluruh negara untuk melambangkan lahirnya Malaysia pada 16 September 1963.

Sungguhpun Singapura berpisah daripada Malaysia pada 9 Ogos 1965, namun jalur-jalur dan bintang pecah 14 terus dikekalkan hingga sekarang.

JALUR GEMILANG adalah nama Bendera Malaysia yang telah diisytiharkan oleh Yang Amat Berhormat Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Perdana Menteri Malaysia pada malam 31 Ogos 1997 sempena Hari Kemerdekaan Malaysia yang ke-40 di Dataran Merdeka.

Semasa nak buat pengisytiharan Jalur Gemilang ini la... cari sejarah bendera Malaysia kat Arkib Negara tak jumpa.

Nampak sgt masyarakat Melayu tidak begitu mengambil berat ttg penulisan dan teks sejarah.

aku pernah tengok bendera negeri kelantan lambang harimau macam Filem Negara tapi ukiran tulisan jawi... dan lagi satu pernah tengok jugak bendetra lamer serupa macam dalam citer Pak Belalang ader bulan bintang dan lambang pokok macam bendera lubnan

History of Jalur Gemilang

In 1949 a committee was formed to consider and formalise the establishment of a flag for the Federation of Malaya. A national-level competition was organised by the Federal Legislative Council. A total of 373 entries were received from which three were short-listed.

The Federal Legislative Council then invited the public to give their feedback on the three selected designs. A poll was conducted by The Malay Mail newspaper. The final result was published on Nov 29, 1949.

The chosen design portrayed eleven blue and white stripes with a yellow crescent and star on the left side. It was designed by Mohamad bin Hamzah, a government architect from Johor.  

A few amendments were made to the design and the final version was approved by the Conference of Rulers on Feb 22 - 23, 1950. On April 19 the same year, the Federal Legislative Council endorsed a motion proposed by the Acting Chief Secretary to the Government as follows:

"That in the opinion of this Council the Flag of the Federation of Malaya should be as follows: Eleven horizontal stripes alternately red and white in colour, the uppermost stripe being red, having a blue quarter with a crescent and eleven pointed star in yellow superimposed, the standard size of the flag to be six feet by three feet."

On May 19, 1950 King George VI gave his consent on the flag design. The flag of the Federation of Malaya was flown for the first time in a flag-hoisting ceremony organised by the British High Commissioner on May 26, 1950 at the grounds of the Selangor Palace, attended by all Malay Rulers and officials of King George VI The malgamation of Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore with the Federation of Malaya gave birth to a new nation, Malaysia. With this development, the flag of the Federation of Malaya needed to be amended.  

The Conference of Rulers consented that the Malaysian flag be based on the original design of the flag of the Federation of Malaya, with amendments made on the number of stripes and points of the star to represent the 14 states under the new Federation.
The Malaysian flag was flown officially for the first time throughout the country to signify the birth of the new nation on Sept 16, 1963.

Although Singapore seceded from Malaysia on Aug 9, 1965, the number of stripes and points of the stars are maintained till today. The fourteen stripes and fourteen points of the star carry a new significance - the federation of thirteen states in the Federal Government.

On the eve of Aug 31, 1997 in conjunction with Malaysia's 40th Independence Day, The Honourable Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced Jalur Gemilang as the official name for the Malaysian flag.

Creative Rationale

The flag of Malaysia is a combination of traditional Islamic symbols and the representation of all the states under the federation. The 14 stripes and 14 points of the star represent the equal status of the 14 member states, namely Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Pulau Pinang, Perak, Perlis, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor and Terengganu in the Federal Government.  The colour red signifies strength, bravery and courage in facing challenges. The colour white symbolises honesty and integrity. The dark blue canton represents the unity and harmony of the peoples of Malaysia. The crescent represents Islam as the dominant religion. The 14-pointed star symbolises the unity of the 13 states with the Federal Government.The yellow colour of the crescent and star is the royal colour of the Rulers.

Why "Jalur Gemilang"

Jalur (pronounced jah-loor) - A Malay word meaning a band or stripe of colour. The 14 parallel red and white stripes symbolise a common mission, a common direction and a virtuous path followed by the peoples of all states regardless of creed, race and religion.

Gemilang (pronounced guh-mee-lung) - A Malay word meaning bright, brilliant, resplendent or excellent.

Jalur Gemilang represents the excellence of the peoples and the nation of Malaysia in every field, be it at national or international level. Jalur Gemilang symbolises a nation and peoples who are hard-working, patriotic, strong, courageous and prepared to sacrifice for the race, nation and religion.

The flag of Malaysia, which was first raised on September 16, 1963, originated from the flag of the Federation of Malaya.
