Jack Earle, who is a Deputy Sheriff from El Paso, Texas, has enrolled as a golf student in a Chicago golf school. He is 8 feet 7 inches tall, and is shown with a putter only 30 inches in length. (Dec. 12, 1928)

Born in Denver as Jacob Ehrlich in 1906 he took the screen name of Jack Earle when in the silent film industry. He was involved with circuses from 1926 to 1940 when he retired. Jack died at age 46 in 1952. "He was well proportioned, extremely likable, possessed a pleasing personality and remarkable intelligence."

On my way from Sarasota to Tampa I pulled up at Gibsonton and inquired for Al Tomaini at the restaurant he owns. I was directed to the town firehouse - Al is Gibsonton's fire chief. He had just left the firehouse. Al was born in 1912, one of 7 kids, to Santos and Maria Tomaini. Early in his career he was billed as "The World's Tallest Boy" and later became known as "The American Giant" . At age 24 he married a fellow performer the half-girl Jeannie (Bernice) Weeks and they were soon advertised as the "World's Strangest Married Couple". They adopted two infant girls, Judy and Patty, and retired to Florida where Al passed away in 1962 at age 50.

April 5,1948 - New York, NY - Johann Petursson, eight-feet-eight-inch giant from Iceland, gets acquainted with the Doll Family, midgets with the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, which opens at Madison Square Garden on April 7th. This is Petursson's first year with the circus, which is scheduled for a month in New York.

Johann Svarfdaelingur was billed as "The Icelandic Giant" or "The Viking Giant" and was actually born in Iceland in 1913, one of 9 kids. Since he began performing as early as 1935, he was well known in his native country and Europe before he came to the U.S. in 1948. He appeared in the movie "Prehistoric Women" (1950) and in "Carny" (1980) which starred Jodie Foster and Gary Busey. He can also be seen in the documentary "Being Different" (1981). Johann lived in the U.S. till 1982 when he returned to his native country. He died in Dalvik, Iceland in 1984.

William George Auger was born in 1883 in Cardiff, Wales. He married his wife Elizabeth while still living in Europe and then came to the U.S. in 1903 to join his sister Lucy and began touring with Barnum and Bailey that year. Like Chang the Chinese Giant whom he succeeded, he was intelligent and was said to have been very knowledgeable on the subject of giants. He spent his retirement years writing short stories and skits. He died in New York City in 1922 supposedly of digestive problems after a particularly large meal at the home of a friend on Thanksgiving Day.

Ted Evans was from Ashford, England. This Kobel photo was taken in 1946 when he was training to be a boxer. Showman Ward Hall has this remembrance of him - "Ted Evans was not only a tall man he was properly proportioned for his height. He arrived in the U.S. during the John Ringling North administration. His last appearance was on the Ringling Show at the Madison Square Garden engagement of 1959.

Evans became sick during the date but believed the show must go on. By the end of the Garden date he was feeling quite ill.

He had a small car which he could barely get into as it was extremely cramped. He drove from New York to Sarasota, Florida to Memorial Hospital there. On arriving at the hospital, Evans was unable to get out of the car. With great effort they pried him out of his vehicle and admitted him where he expired a few days later."

Jakob (or Jacob) Nacken was born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1906. He came to the U.S. to appear at the 1939-40 New York World's Fair. When WWII broke out he answered his native country's call to arms and fought against the Allies. His capture in 1944 as the "biggest Nazi" made all the press throughout the U.S. He must have liked the States, though, as in 1949 he sailed here to take a job as "the world's largest Santa Claus" and eventually became a citizen. He was still finding work as the world's tallest man in 1959 when he appeared with Ripley's Odditorium on Broadway. Jakob was 81 years old when he died - somewhere in Europe. Nacken's pitch ring from the New York World's Fair or Ripley's Odditorium.

The following chart represents the comparative sizes of giants throughout history.

A. Present day modern man which averages about 6-feet tall + or - several inches or more.

B. 15-foot human skeleton found in southeast Turkey in late 1950's in the Euphrates valley during road construction.  Many tombs containing giants were uncovered here. This pertains to the picture of the giant human femur and myself above.

C. Maximinus Thrax Ceaser of Rome 235-238 A.D.  This was an 8' 6" skeleton.

D. Goliath was about 9 feet + or - a few inches.  I Samuel 17:4 late 11th century.

E. King Og spoken of in Deuteronomy 3:11 whose iron bedstead was approximately 14-feet by 6-feet wide. King Og was at least 12-feet tall, yet some claim up to 18.

F. A 19'6" human skeleton found in 1577 A.D. under an overturned oak tree in the Canton of Lucerne.

G. 23-foot tall skeleton found in 1456 A.D. beside a river in Valence, France.

H. A 25' 6 " skeleton found in 1613 A.D. near the castle of Chaumont in France. This was claimed to be a nearly complete find.

I. Almost beyond comprehension or believability was the find of the two separate 36-foot human remains uncovered by Carthaginians somewhere between 200-600 B.C.
