China Sportswear Brands Seek Win With Outsiders

(8/14) China Sportswear Brands Seek Win With Outsiders

By Mei Fong

BEIJING -- It seemed like an inspired marketing idea to executives at Chinese sportswear brand Erke.

Muscled out by Nike Inc. and Adidas AG, which locked up most of China's athletes in juicy sponsorship deals ahead of the Beijing Olympics, Erke decided to boldly go where the global giants wouldn't -- they would sponsor North Korea's Olympic team.

And Erke isn't the only Chinese brand trying to sell more sportswear through an alliance with an Olympic delegation from a pariah state. Li Ning Co. is clothing Sudan's track athletes.

Even though there weren't companies lining up to compete for the honor, working with teams from these insular nations hasn't been easy.

Wu Rongzhao, chief executive at China Hongxing Sports Ltd., which owns Erke, said the company's maiden stab at Olympic sponsorship was "a very painful process," which stretched the company's resources in technical innovation and in servicing the demands of the delegation.

For example, the huge amount of red tape and bureaucracy required by Pyongyang's Olympic officials -- who would communicate only by emails, not international phone calls -- forced Erke to scrub plans for a marketing event timed to the opening of the Games, said a person familiar with the matter.

Not wanting it to compete with the country's flag, North Korea's team eschewed Erke's stylized swan on their Opening Ceremonies outfits. So did a member of North Korea's judo team, Kye Sun Hui, who wore a Mizuno tunic during her matches. (A Mizuno spokesman said the company isn't a sponsor. The Japanese government has an embargo against commerce with North Korea.)

Calls to the North Korean Embassy in Beijing seeking a comment weren't answered, and the country's Olympic officials declined to comment.

Some executives from Western sportswear companies who have complained of tangling with China's sports bureaucracy and managing hugely inaccessible and sometimes wooden Chinese sports stars find Erke's problems a source of mild hilarity, mirroring their own problems.

North Korean athletes -- who come from an even more rigid culture than China -- aren't exactly a sports marketer's dream. Most are trained to be self-effacing and credit their victories to the North Korean regime and its leader, Kim Jong Il. Female weightlifter Pak Hyon Suk, who won North Korea's first gold medal Tuesday -- wearing Erke -- said her gold medal was the "best present for the president, for the people, for the country and for myself," according to Xinhua, China's state-run news agency.

It could have been worse. In 1972, North Korean gold-medal shooter Li Ho-Jun told reporters he won because he was thinking of then-leader Kim Il Sung's admonition to imagine his targets as "enemies," words deemed so unsportsmanlike officials called a second press conference where Mr. Li claimed he was misquoted.

Li Ning -- the eponymous sportswear brand of the legendary Chinese gymnast who lit the Olympic cauldron -- sponsors Sudan's track-and-field team, earning the ire of activists, who say the Chinese government and Chinese companies' support for Khartoum is exacerbating killings in the country's Darfur region.

Ellen Freudenheim, director at the New York-based Dream for Darfur group, said in an email the company's Sudan sponsorship "is just one more way that China, now exploiting the business dimension of the Games, is supporting the legitimacy of a nation whose leaders are genocidal, and whose president has just been indicted by the ICC [International Criminal Court] for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity."

Like Erke executives, those at Li Ning say their decisions to sponsor these teams is about the athletes and not the policies of their rulers.

Unlike in the West, such decisions don't have the same kind of negative associations with buyers at home. Companies say these deals give their brands some international cachet in the eyes of Chinese consumers.

Jason Guo, chief operating officer at Li Ning, said when the deal was announced a year ago that Chinese consumers are mostly unaware or don't care about the controversies generated by Darfur activists outside China. Moreover, Chinese customers are largely patriotic and supportive of the country's efforts to hold a successful Games, he said.

Indeed, shares of the company jumped Monday following Mr. Li's run as torchbearer -- making Mr. Li, the majority shareholder, $30 million richer -- as shareholders bet the publicity would raise company sales.

Still, Li Ning executives declined requests to interview the Sudanese or to speak further on this issue, saying it was too sensitive. The Sudanese team didn't respond to requests for comment.

Erke executives say the long ties between China and North Korea means there aren't any negative associations in Chinese consumers' minds with a country U.S. President George W. Bush labeled part of the "axis of evil," either. Plus, North Korea has some medal prospects in sports like weightlifting, soccer and judo.

"These sports are also highly watched events among the Chinese population, and we felt it was a great opportunity to have an entire country's athletes wear our products to compete, and hence raise the awareness of our brand among our consumers, located mainly in the second- and third-tier cities," of China, said Erke spokeswoman Jenny Yeo in an email.

The North Korean sponsorship cost Erke between $2 million and $3 million, said Mr. Wu. Singapore-listed Hongxing reported net profit of US$59 million for the 2007 financial year.

Human-rights activists worry this trend could undermine efforts to increase corporate social responsibility, particularly among Western companies operating in China, some of which have only in recent years begun tightening up labor and environmental violations. The deals by Chinese firms could start "a new race to the bottom -- using the pretext of competition -- to engage in what is morally wrong," said Nicholas Bequelin, a Hong Kong-based researcher for Human Rights Watch.

Alat dan Kemudahan Sukan " Buatan China " untuk Sukan Olimpik Beijing

2008-08-13 11:51:09 CRI
