Park beckons visitors to Pekan

By ROSLINA MOHAMAD

PEKAN, the quaint town south of Kuantan, is slowly but surely growing.

The automotive industry in the Peramu Jaya industrial area is thriving while University College Engineering and Technology Malaysia (Kuktem) is building its main campus in Kuala Pahang.

The main campus can accommodate up to 10,000 students and is expected to be completed in five years.

Another project set to commence next month is the Mara Science College, also in Kuala Pahang.

In view of these developments, the Pekan district and land office has taken measures to build more infrastructure, including recreational areas.

One of the projects is a recreational park in Peramu, which opened to the public in February last year.

District officer Datuk Haron Abdul Kader said the park was named after the Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah? father, the late Sultan Sir Abu Bakar.

?he Sultan Abu Bakar Lake Park is built on 34.6ha with built-up area of 18ha.

?here are eight components in the park including a resort, shoplots and a multipurpose hall,? Haron said.

A traditional house built in the park.

He said the idea for the park came from Sultan Ahmad Shah who has the people's welfare close to his heart.

?is Majesty always makes impromptu visits to the town to ensure it is clean, beautiful and well-lit.

?e is very concerned about the people? well-being and wants them to have a place for leisure activities,? he said.

The RM5.1mil park consists of an information centre, five traditional houses, two huge figurines, an observation tower, a 5km footpath, a 5.2ha man-made lake, pavilions and a playground.

Haron said that three of the traditional houses were used as art gallery, handicraft shop and traditional weaving area for demonstrations by well-known weaver Nortipah Kadir.

Three herb parks for Pahang

Tuesday February 28, 2006

JERANTUT: The richness of the variety of herbs in the state can be commercialised apart from ensuring the plants are preserved for future generations.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said the state had identified several areas in Janda Baik (Bentong), Lanchang (Temerloh) and Sungai Lembing to turn them into herb parks.

He said the three places were ideal due to their natural environment.

He said the parks would be managed by state agencies such as Forestry Department, Agricultural Department and Malaysia Technology Park.

?he plants will become extinct if there are no efforts to preserve them for future generations.?

He said that many studies had been conducted and suggested the herbs found in the jungles were valuable assets for medical purposes.

?uture generations will stand to lose if we fail to take measures to preserve the plants,? he said after opening the Kuala Tahan Growth Centre here recently.

Adnan said the state would allocate at least 200ha to plant herbs such as misai kuching, kacip fatimah and tongkat ali.

He said there were more local herbs waiting to be discovered in the forests.

?ith the setting up of herb parks, all the species can be made available and even commercialised,? he said, adding that there were also herbs found in Felda areas.
