Actor Cha Tae-hyun to Marry on June 1

Actor Cha Tae-hyun has sent a message to his fans ahead of his wedding on June 1. His bride is his high school friend, whom he says is his first love.

In the message announced by his agency Sidus HQ on Thursday, he said that he is very happy every day waiting for one of his long-cherished dreams to soon be realized.

"I will finally come to see the fruit of love that I have nurtured for 13 years on June 1, 2006. I will no longer be small individual Cha Tae-hyun but reborn as a husband of a woman and head of a family," he said. "On one side of my mind I feel worried that I may not do well, but on the other side I cannot help feeling delighted."

He is also determined to do his best to lead a happy life. "I will do everything to live happily with my life partner whom I love. We both will try to understand and love each other more," he said. Finally he asked his fans to bless his marriage.

Cha's wedding will be held at the Walker Hill Hotel in Seoul.

SM Entertainment to Set Up Global Fan Club

SM Entertainment will set up a global fan club for the entertainers it manages -- BoA, Kang Ta, TVXQ, The Trax, TSZX, and Super Junior. The agency said Monday that it will receive applications for membership to the club from May 30 until June 30.

The global fan club is designed to provide fast information and privileges for overseas fans as well as local fans.

Those who want to become members can apply by choosing an artist they like and their country at the website http://fanclub.smtowm.com. There will be eight country categories -- Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the U.S., and other international regions. The membership will be effective for one year.

Members will be given membership cards featuring pictures of the artist they chose to support. They will also receive the club's news letters and information and become part of the internet community for the club.

In addition, they will be entitled to attend not only the club's establishment ceremony, which all the artists will attend, but also TV programs, concerts and other events featuring their chosen artist.

Foreign languages a path to international stardom for South Korean singers

SEOUL, May 30 (Yonhap) -- Besides their singing and dancing skills, South Korean pop stars these days have another thing they need to practice daily -- foreign languages.

With the boom in popularity of South Korean pop culture overseas broadening their potential fanbase to include countries such as China, Japan and the United States, budding entertainers here are now striving to learn foreign languages to help them reach their goal of becoming global superstars.

Bi, who always travels with a private English language tutor in tow, cites a particular event that caused him to suddenly feel a desperate need to be able to speak English.

"After attending the Time (magazine) 100 party, I realized speaking English is the way to survive," the singer, also known by his English name Rain, said in a recent interview.

Attending the party as one of the world's 100 most influential figures selected by Time magazine, he conversed with other invitees like U.S. film producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Hollywood actor Will Smith.

"I regretted that I neglected my English studies as a kid. Now I'm learning English grammar and conversation from my tutor and I always bring a vocabulary book with me when I have something scheduled," he said.

Male singer Seven, who has joined the top ranks of entertainers in Japan, divides his time off stage between learning Japanese, English and Chinese, according to his South Korean agency YG Entertainment. In his debut concert in Tokyo in April, he joked and conversed with his audience in Japanese.

"Full-time teachers follow him because he doesn't have time to sit and study," an official of his agency said, "There is not always enough time with schedules planned overseas."

The modern era of multilingual entertainers was ushered in by South Korean female pop singer BoA, who speaks Japanese and English as well as her native Korean. Having learned Japanese from tutors when she was in elementary school, Boa is now focused on honing her English skills.

SM Entertainment, the South Korean agency representing BoA and boy band Dong Bang Shin Gi, said it organizes special language courses for its budding stars.

At its "SM Summer China Camp," aspiring global superstars undergo courses to learn Chinese language and culture to give them an edge in the fast growing Chinese market for pop music, it said.

KBS World to Sign Transmission Contract with Thai Network



According to KBS on May 23, KBS World, KBS's overseas network, will transmit programs in Thailand.

As such, KBS World will sign a program transmission contract with 213 nationwide cable service operators in Thailand on May 26.

In accordance with the contract, about 900,000 Thai homes that are subscribers to cable services can watch KBS World programs on ordinary channels without paying additional fees, starting as early as early June. Thai cable service operators will receive KBS World programs via international satellite and transmit them to their local subscribers through their own cable networks.

An official from KBS said, "We'll be able to push the hallyu boom in Southeast Asia to a higher level. The upcoming contract with Thailand is expected to add momentum to our advance into other countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore as well as nations adjacent to Thailand, with which we've nearly finished negotiations."

Meanwhile, KBS World programs were previously broadcast on a premium channel via UBC, a satellite Thai network, for a year from February 2005. Thai TV audiences had to pay about 60,000 won to watch KBS World programs during that period.

Jackie Chan Invites Jang Nara to Charity Concert

World-renowned film star Jackie Chan has officially invited hallyu star Jang Nara to his upcoming charity concert.

On its official homepage, Jang's agency said on June 1, "Jang Nara has been invited by Jackie Chan to his charity concert entitled 'Jackie Chan and His Friends' to be held in Nanjing, China on June 24."

The agency also said, "Jackie Chan has asked Jang to sing a duet, the theme song of the film 'The Myth,' that day, which Jang has gladly accepted."

Meanwhile, Jang returned home from China on May 30 to go to the polls for the local elections on May 31. She will leave for China again on June 4. She will attend a ceremony to celebrate the broadcast of the drama "Diaoman Gongzhu (The Unruly Princess)" on Shanxi Satellite Broadcasting Station's channel. The event will be held in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province.

Jang will also record a special program hosted by BTV in Beijing.
