Monster Flick Ups Hype With Five-Poster Campaign

The posters for the latest film from director Bong Jun-ho "The Host," the most anxiously awaited domestic release this year, each depict one of its five stars -- an ordinary family confronting a monster that emerges from the Han River. The unprecedented five different posters are all topped with the line "The fight has begun," but each is devoted to one of the characters played by Song Kang-ho, Byun Hee-bong, Park Hae-il, Bae Doo-na and Ko A-sung.

They are Gang-doo, who although not the most responsible of fathers fights the monster with his bare hands to rescue his only daughter; grandpa Hee-bong, who looks after his granddaughter Hyun-seo as well as his two sons and one daughter; uncle Nam-il who always grumbles but comes through when it matters; demure aunt Nam-joo; and Gang-doo's daughter Hyun-seo. In the background, we see an ominous image of the Han River, from where the monster will emerge.

The film pits that average family against a monster with huge sharp teeth, the head of a fish and a reptilian body that cost nearly half of the production budget to create. It is scheduled to hit theaters on July 27.

Screened during Director's Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival, the creature movie was singled out as one of the best films at the festival by the New York Times, while Variety magazine called director Bong Jun-ho one of the most promising in Korea. Riding a wave of positive reviews, the film is already setting a new record for export deals of any Korean film in Cannes: Argentina, China, Malaysia, Singapore, France, Spain, Mexico, the U.S. and the U.K. forked out over US$2.3 million to buy the film. By then it had already brought in $4.7 million for the Japanese distribution rights.

Park Shin-hye Invited to Photo Exhibition for Korean Top Stars

Rising teenage actress Park Shin-hye, who has become popular in Japan since the drama "Trees in Heaven" aired there in March, has been offered an opportunity to promote herself in Japan.

The 17 year-old actress is the only star in her teens among the Korean stars who have been invited to the Fuji TV-sponsored Korean star photo exhibition to be held in Tokyo until July 2. Other invited stars include Japanese favorite Bae Yong-jun, Jang Dong-gun, Lee Young-ae, Won Bin and Son Ye-jin.

Park will not only make an appearance at the exhibition but also participate in an auction hosted by the exhibition organizer, where the stars' personal mementos will be auctioned off. The proceeds from the auction will be donated to UNICEF.

Park's agency, CloudFish, said that the fact that Park has been invited to the exhibition for Korean top stars shows that she is recognized as a rising star who will lead the Korean Wave in the future in Japan. "We hope that her popularity there will become even greater because of the exhibition," it added.

Meanwhile, the young actress is now shooting a horror film with the working title of "Untold Story: The Red Forest."

Flawed 'Carnival' Still Worth Price of Admission

By Joon Soh
Contributing Writer

Jo In-sung stars in "A Dirty Carnival."

Despite the flood of gangster films that have graced local screens over the years, the genre remains quite popular with South Korean filmmakers. But for every new movie that comes out, it becomes an increasing challenge for directors to avoid having their stylishly noir filming feel like a rehash of old tricks.

Director Yoo Ha's "A Dirty Carnival" is the latest to delve into the world of the South Korean mafias. Expectations are high for the film as it follows Yoo's widely acclaimed "Spirit of Jeekeundo," a provocative look at high school violence and one of the top-grossing films of 2004.

In many ways, "Dirty Carnival" feels like a logical progression from "Spirit of Jeekeundo," as it expands on the idea of violence as a social phenomenon. The arena has changed from high school to criminal underworld, but the underlying concept of power remains the same.

The gangsters of "Dirty Carnival" live with a strict adherence to hierarchy and loyalty; they expect absolute compliance from their subordinates, the same obedience that they then purport to show to their superiors. The main protagonist, Pyong-du, played by Jo In-sung, sits in the middle of this hierarchy, as captain of his own team but also answering to his bosses.

But while these gangsters have their codes, Yoo also shows how the boundary between their world and ours is not all that clear cut, especially when it comes to money. The gangsters treat their work as a job, and worry over such things as the direction of their careers. They dream of a "spon," slang for a sponsor, or a patron who will financially back their illegal projects.

Indeed, their actions are akin to those of a venture capitalist looking for investors, and a bloody fight between rival gangs feels like a hostile takeover in the most frightening sense of the term. Within this scheme, Pyong-du is a middle manager, but with aspirations of moving up the ladder by any means necessary.

This combination of violence and commerce gives "Dirty Carnival" a disturbing sense of realism as it depicts a world where rules of mercantilism have run amok. This mixture may be somewhat familiar to fans of "The Sopranos," the American television show about a mafia clan in New Jersey, but within the context of Korea and its demanding social hierarchy, it resonates more deeply and strongly.

Because Yoo's approach to the Korean gangster theme seems so fresh, it makes it that much more puzzling and disappointing when he decides to also include some predictable elements of the genre. In an attempt to "humanize" Pyong-du, for example, Yoo introduces a kindhearted girlfriend (Lee Bo-young) whose purity shakes Pyong-du抯 faith in his work. Unfortunately, these melodramatic elements have the opposite effect of their intention.

A more successful subplot revolves around Min-ho (Nam Gung-min), Pyong-du's elementary school friend and an aspiring filmmaker looking to make a hit gangster film. The story could probably have been better integrated into the rest of the plot, but the character's cynicism and desperation makes for an interesting and sometimes humorous complement to the harsh reality of the gangster's life. It also gives director Yoo plenty of opportunities to satirize himself, which he does with glee.

Jo In-sung Is Back in 'Dirty Carnival'

It is the dream of Byung-du aka "Number 3" (Jo In-sung), always ignored at the Rotary gang, to find a sponsor with plenty of cash and tidy up his failed life. When his higher-up in the organization declines the order of wealthy businessman Hwang to "take care of" a senior prosecutor, Byung-du snatches the opportunity. His right hand Jong-soo (Jin Gu) flits to the scenario like a moth to a porch light, while his elementary school buddy Min-ho (Namgung Min) is making a movie called "The Struggles of a Southern Sluggard" out of the entire process. This is where the mean streets erupt into a base and wicked carnival.

Chungmuro, home to the Korean film industry, could fill a truck with gangster movies that tell stories of lust and betrayal. But director Yoo Ha's "A Dirty Carnival" opening this Thursday breaks free from its predecessors in the genre. While the film on the face of it follows the conventions, the story is really about the consumerist mobsters' tattered lives. The director wanted to expand the film抯 scope to include everything related to life in a capitalist society. The mobsters, the family that eats with them, and the elementary school classmate who once believed with all his heart that he could give everything, end up saying, "It's a dog-eat-dog world out there." The Jo In-sung we see in the film leaves quite an impression: this young star, rediscovered by Yoo Ha, proves that he still has a lot more to show us.

One recent survey showed that the type of man most popular with other men is a man of integrity and the "all-round cool guy." People associate this type of man with Jo In-sung. What this 187 cm-tall, 72 kg-slim man wears on TV becomes an instant fashion fad, but when he made his debut, he was told, he had a bad voice and a weird face.

But Jo wouldn't be who he is if he had let that discourage him. He found endurance and strength that are rare in one so young. And while the actor is famous for his younger-brother image, he is in fact the eldest son in his family. When he was a high school student, his family was hit hard by the Asian financial crisis, so he and his favorite younger brother had to go through hard times. After becoming famous as an actor, he said he was happy to pay for his brother's tuition. Jo's lifestyle is all about not wasting his energy but pouring it into the right thing. He seems reliable, quite unlike other young actors.

Drama "Snow Flower" to Be Shot in September

The shooting of the drama "Snow Flower" will commence in Japan in September. It is based on the same-titled novel written by Kim Su-hyun and stars actresses Kim Hee-ae and Goh Ah-ra.

The chief of production company Samhwa, Shin Hyun-taek, said Friday that Kim Hee-ae and Goh concluded a contract to appear in the drama six months ago and that the shooting will be launched in September.

The drama portrays affection and conflict between a mother and her only daughter. Kim Hee-ae will play the mother and Goh the daughter. Kim Su-hyun抯 pupil Park Jin-woo will dramatize the novel and the original writer will supervise the revision. The director has yet to be named.

The soap opera was originally supposed to be produced in October 2004 and aired from January 2005 on SBS. But the production was postponed when original author Kim Su-hyun opposed the proposal to cast singer Lee Hyo-ri as the daughter. The novel was once cinematized in 1991 and actresses Yoon Jeong-hee and Lee Mi-yeon played the leads.

揥ith other major cast members undecided, Choi Kang Chang-min (aka Max,) a member of the idol group TVXQ, will play the role of the boyfriend of Goh's character. A Japanese idol star will appear as Goh's stepsister," Shin added.

The drama will likely be aired on either MBC or SBS in January or February next year after scenes featuring snow are filmed in November and December, Shin said.

35 Pop Artists to Release Joint Album

A total of 35 pop artists from the agency SM Entertainment, including Kang Ta, BoA, T.V.X.Q., and Super Junior, will release a joint album entitled "06 Summer SM Town."

This album designed for the summer season will be released on June 20 following a similar album released two years ago. Singers from this entertainment agency including Kang Ta and BoA recorded the album together despite their busy schedules.

The forthcoming album's title song sung by all 35 musicians is "Red Sun," a song with a smooth melody, fantastic and exhilarating rhythm, and a unique orchestration. It is a pop dance song that imparts feelings different from those of other summer songs.

Attention is especially being drawn to the songs featuring guitar melodies sung by Kang Ta and composed by pianist Song Kwang-sik--"Confession on a Summer Night" and "Number One"--and another song, "Touch," written by Ziggy, the composer of "Spark," for BoA.

In addition, the song "Dancing Out" highlighted by harmonies on guitar and a keyboard is a piece beautifully combining rock'n'roll and dance beats. This song is especially exciting because of its repetition of vocals, rap and melodies presented by the group Super Junior. "Catch the Shooting Star" is a song with powerful and stimulating hiphop beats. This song will give fans a chance to discover new talents of female group T.S.Z.X. Song Kwang-sik made this song more enjoyable by improvising on the piano.

The forthcoming album features a total of ten songs that were written by top pop music writers such as Song, Genji, Hwang Sung-je, Kim Young-hoo, Kim Ji-hoo, and Ziggy, enhancing the songs' musicality.

'The Host' to Be Released in 250 Theaters in Japan
2006-06-21

Director Bong Jun-ho's latest work 'The Host' will be released in 250 Japanese
theaters on Sept. 2, the Internet edition of Nikkan Sports said Wednesday. It is
the first time Japanese newspapers have reported details about the release of the
upcoming Korean movie.

The Japanese sports newspaper said that 'The Host' directed by Bong--called
the 'Akira Kurosawa of Korea' --had been highly praised as the best movie of the
year when it was premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival. It will be
released in 10 other nations across the world, it added.

The movie was sold to Japan for US$4.7 million after showing only the script and
drawings of characters at the Hong Kong film market in March, without previewing
any footage that had actually been shot. Japan reportedly suggested dividing box
office profits according to the movie's success after the release.

It remains to be seen how much the movie, featuring a monster created with
special effects, will appeal to Japanese people who are already used to the
country's advanced special effects technology.

The movie will be released on July 27 in Korea.

2006-06-21

Top star Song Hye-gyo, who has been pursuing her dream of becoming a "hallyu
queen" in Japan, will introduce her large-scale video album in December.

The announcement has drawn the spotlight as a promising new project that could
set off another Korean Wave.

Entertainment company Starm Planning said on June 21 that Song's video album,
whose shooting has wrapped up recently, will hit the Japanese market in
December.

The agency is also the organizer of singer Rain's Asian tour of 11 nations.

A person from the company said that the company has been putting finishing
touches on Song's album to cater to Japanese customers, and will refine the
photos for about two or three months even after developing the film to ensure
perfect quality.

He also added that the photos have received a favorable response for featuring
the actress in an elegant way.

The photos were taken from last month for over 20 days in countries in three
continents Including Patagonia, Argentina, the United States, France and the
Netherlands, against scenic backdrops.

The album is slated for release in time for the airing of the TV series "Full House,"
which stars Song, in Japan, as well as the actress's new movie. It aims to elevate
Song's status to that of a next-generation hallyu star on par with actor Bae Yong

A person from the showbiz industry said Japan was an important market culturally

Attention is focused on whether Song will be able to beat her high-profile rivals to

Hi N'war! Thanks for the updates, appreciate them a lot! ^^

TV Dramas Obsessed With Blood Ties

By Park Chung-a
Staff Reporter

There is a story of a beautiful girl who leads a miserable life, having to cope with ill-treatment from her stepmother. One day, just like magic, a kind middle-aged woman appears out of the blue. She introduces her son, a rich and elite news anchor, making her a Cinderella. However, what if the very angel turns out to be her biological mother who abandoned her when she was a child?

This story is the popular TV soap opera "To Heaven," currently airing on SBS.

Despite such a nonsensical setting and relations among the characters, the drama has been enjoying top viewing in recent months.

"One Fine Day"

In another popular TV drama, MBC's "One Fine Day," the heroine is a girl who desperately waits for her biological brother from whom she was separated at childhood. However, what do you do when the brother who turns up after 15 years is, in fact, not the real one?

The two dramas are a few of the many examples of today抯 Korean TV dramas featuring sensational family secrets as main themes. Almost all of the dramas depict family tragedies arising from distorted blood ties and their climaxes mostly involve revelation of the blood tie secrets.

In a weekend drama "Hilarious Seven Princesses", Solchil appears as Michil's twin sister. However, it later turns out Michil was brought to the family by Solchil, hence sparking conflict within the family.

In the KBS TV drama "Great Heritage," the central theme lies in how hero Hyun-se comes to know the existence of his biological father and how he reacts to the unexpected situation.

In "One Fine Day," the highlight of the drama lies in revealing that the two main characters _ who originally believed each other as biological brother and sister _ turn out not to be blood related. Plus, Ha-nul抯 legal brother, a son of Ha-nul's adoptive parents, makes things more complicated as he becomes romantically bent on Ha-nul. A recent episode showed Tae-won almost raping Ha-nul in her room. The shocking scene was captured and spread through the Internet, becoming one of the Internet抯 most searched for clips.

"To Heaven"

Experts point out such excessive use of family tragedies arising from blood ties stems from lack of creativity and belittle the quality of the domestic TV dramas.

"TV Producers' and writers' obsessions over blood ties close the spectrum of Korean dramas," TV critic Kang Myong-sok, said. He believes that as a large portion of young viewers have turned to cable channels or the Internet, the middle-aged have become the most influential TV viewers hence, an increasing number of dramas focus on appealing to them.

"Although we all know that such dramas are cliche and their subjects are highly unrealistic and absurd, it is hard to get (our) eyes off from them,拻 said Han Sok-ja, 50, an ardent fan of "To Heaven."

"While being disturbed by the characters

Kim Hye-soo Voted Korea's Most Beautiful Face

A group of the nation's top photographers have settled on Kim Hye-soo as the most beautiful face in Korea, according to a poll conducted by the film magazine Movie Week. The "Beautiful Faces 25" event brought together 86 of the nation's photographers responsible for most of the movie posters and stills, and fashion magazines.

They explained their decision saying the actress "exudes passion, and the camera loves her free and cool image. She doesn't try to look overly beautiful but is always a commanding presence. No matter what kind of clothes she has on, she speaks in a straightforward manner."
