"King and Clown" nominated for 15 categories of Daejong award

The film "King and the Clown" has been nominated for 15 categories at the 43rd Daejong Film Festival slated to open on July 21. The number is the most categories a single film has ever been nominated for in the festival's history. The runner-ups were "Typhoon" with 12 categories and "Welcome to Dongmakgeol" with nine categories.

The nominated films were announced on June 20th at the Seoul Press Center.

"King and the Clown" will vie for best picture, best director (Lee Jun-ik), best leading actor (Kam Woo-sung), best supporting actor (Yoo Hae-jin), best supporting actress (Kang Sung-yeon), best new actor (Lee Jun-ki), best script, best cinematography, best lighting, best editing, best music, best art, best acoustic technology, best planning and best costumes.

"Typhoon," for its part, will compete for best picture, best director (Kwak Kyung-taek) and best leading actors (Jang Dong-gun and Lee Jung-jae).

Comedian/actor Lim Ha-ryong has been nominated as best supporting actor in the movie "Welcome to Dongmakgol," while singer/actor Tak Jae-hoon has been nominated for best new actor in the movie "Married to the Mafia 2."

The Daejong Film Festival screens 49 of a total of 74 presented domestic movies selected by a 10 member jury headed by filmmaker Lee Doo-yong. To eliminate irregularities and suspicions over unfair judgment, the festival also operates a jury comprising some one thousand ordinary people from five cities who participate in choosing the best picture and the best leading and supporting actors and actresses.

Voting for the people's choice award is conducted not only in Korea but also in Japan through July 20 via the Internet and mobile communication.

An official from the festival's organizing committee said award-winners will be selected through a transparent process thanks to the ordinary jury, the first of its kind in the nation.

This year's festival will open July 21 at 6 p.m. at the Convention Hall of the Convention and Exhibition Center in Samseong-dong, Seoul, and be broadcast live from 8:50 p.m. on SBS TV.

"A Dirty Carnival" Beats "X-Men"

揂 Dirty Carnival" directed by Yoo Ha drew the most viewers at the box office on Tuesday, with some 80,000 viewers at 390 theaters nationwide, leaving U.S. blockbuster "X-Men: The Last Stand" behind, which tallied some 75,000 viewers at 428 theaters.

揂 Dirty Carnival" has become the first Korean movie in seven weeks to beat Hollywood blockbusters that had topped the box office here since "Mission: Impossible 3" was released on May 3. The top spot has since been occupied by "The Da Vinci Code," "Poseidon," and "X-Men" before "A Dirty Carnival" captured it on Tuesday.

The news particularly pleased the Korean film industry, although it is just a daily tally. CJ Entertainment, the movie's distributor, said, "We expected that the movie would draw more viewers than 'X-Men' from Monday, and it finally did on Tuesday. The difference is no more than several thousand people, but we are really happy." On Monday, "A Dirty Carnival" drew 55,000 viewers, closely following "X-Men" with 60,600, after trailing the U.S. movie by a large margin over the weekend.

Now it remains to be seen whether "Les Formidables," "A.P.T." and other Korean movies to be released soon can maintain the momentum generated by "A Dirty Carnival." Hollywood blockbusters waiting to be released are "Superman Returns" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."

Singer Seven Re-signs Contract with Agency

Singer Seven has re-signed a contract with his agency YG Entertainment, with time remaining on his current contract period. Seven announced that he will make a contract with his agent again on June 22 and will not receive any advance payment.

The net worth of Seven is estimated at more than five billion won and therefore, it would be natural for him to receive at least one billion won in earnest money. However, he decided not to take the money in consideration of his trust in YG Entertainment.

Seven's manager Lee Ji-woon said, "Despite his remaining contract term, Seven expressed his willingness to re-sign a contract immediately after singer Wheesung moved to another agency. Seeing company chief Yang Hyun-seok disappointed at Wheesung抯 departure, Seven made the proposal first."

With the new contract, Seven plans to produce four more recordings with the agency.

YG Entertainment head Yang Hyun-seok transferred part of his stake in the company to the singer's parents as a token of his gratitude.

Lee Ji-woon said, however, "It is too early to calculate the value of the share, since stocks are worthless until a company is listed. But if YG Entertainment goes public, the stake will be worth more than five billion won."

揧ang is working on establishing YG America, a U.S branch of the company, and Seven's plan to make inroads into the U.S is making progress swiftly. Seven has wrapped up his activities in Korea and will stay in the U.S for the time being," Lee added.

Girly guise

By FOONG WOEI WAN

FROM Taiwanese model-actor Joe Cheng to South Korean actor Lee Joon Ki, star of the hit movie King And The Clown, androgynous celebrities are having their day in the sun. Sure, Asian showbusiness has never been short of beautiful boys (or bishonen, as they are known in Japan).

In the 1980s and the 1990s, the late Hong Kong actor-singer Leslie Cheung was a dazzling exemplar of the male diva, with all the splendid beauty and sexual ambiguity it implied.

He famously went ultra-feminine in the 1993 Cannes-winning drama Farewell My Concubine, starring as a female impersonator in the title role.

But he was just one man, not yet a movement. And traditionally macho types such as Chow Yun Fat and Tony Leung Chiu Wai were still the norm from which Cheung deviated.

You could say the tide began to turn in the late 1990s, thanks to Takuya Kimura.

The preening Japanese pretty boy with trademark long locks starred in serials like Long Vacation (1996) and swiftly found a following in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Without him, there would be no F4, the floppy-topped pop phenomenon from Taiwan who forced the bishonen floodgates wide open. Their 2001 TV show, Meteor Garden, is based on a Japanese manga, Hana Yori Dango (Boys Before Flowers).

And F4

Lee Seung-chul to Announce Digital Single
2006-06-27

Singer Lee Seung-chul has embarked on a new project that will likely change the
whole paradigm of the pop market. Lee will soon announce his new song entitled
Don't Leave via the project named Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

As the nation's first, the project will include the new songs of several artists as
digital singles that will later be released as a standard album.

While resembling existing compilation records at first glance, the project will only
feature brand-new songs and top-quality music.

The advantage of the project is that it is expected to boost the stagnated record
market in the country. It costs tens of millions of won to release a single in the
online market, but the new project will not only ensure guaranties worth tens of
millions of won but also large additional revenues through diverse marketing
channels and multiple opportunities for artists to meet with their fans.

Lee, who is currently preparing his new album slated for release in September, will
release his new song, Don't Leave to catch up with his fans after a seven-month
hiatus.

The new song was written by Song Jae-woo, who also produced the title song
Piano for singer Cho Sung-mo's fifth album, and Lee Kyung-yi, who wrote the
lyrics of singer Kim Jong-kook's song Gift. Don't Leave is about a man's promise
of a never-changing love to a woman who is about to leave him.

A person who participated in the project's planning said the project will involve
more artists in the future and that an album comprising the digital singles of
domestic artists will appear in record stores at the end of this year.

Korean Horror Moves to New Haunted Territory

There is something afoot in Korean horror movies. From "Arang," to be released on June 28, via "Apartment," out in July, to "To Sir With Love," "Cinderella" and "Untold Story- The Red Forest" all to be released in August, indigenous horror movies have evolved to a higher level. In an effort to wash away the cheap shocker taint, the budgets are growing and the casts are becoming stellar. This summer, even moviegoers with sophisticated tastes are bound to find one good enough for them.

Quality Horror

Horror films have long been a gateway to success for new directors due to their relatively low budgets. If a W2-3 billion (US$1=\958) investment including marketing costs lured more than 1 million viewers, the movie was considered to have hit the jackpot. But the new slew of horror films are betting on quality. "To Sir With Love" cost W4.2 billion, "Apartment" W4 billion, "Arang" W4 billion and "Cinderella" W3.6 billion ? all pretty close to the average for Korean movies, which stands at some W4.5 billion.

More and more established directors are eyeing horror films as their next screen project. Ahn Byung-gi, well known for such horror films as "The Scissors" (2000), "Phone" (2002) and "Bunsinsaba" (2004) promises to "show people what real horror is" with "Apartment," the movie he directed based on a comic book. Bong Man-dae, who specialized in melodramas like "Sweet Sex and Love," has changed tack with "Cinderella." Dream And Pictures, the producer of "Arang," say horror films like "Phone" and "A Tale Of Two Sisters" have succeeded both in terms of quality and box office and even produced stars since 2000. As a result, there has been a growing perception that horror films can no longer stint on quality.

Quality Screamers

Time was when all horror movies had to do was make audiences grip their arm rests. Films like "Whispering Corridors" and "Bunsinsaba" cast teenage newcomers to do the screaming. But this year is seeing experienced actresses who built their career in more respectable films and TV dramas, from Ko So-young in "Apartment" to Song Yun-a in "Arang" and Do Ji-won in "Cinderella", turn to gruesome tales. Ko So-young surprised a few people by choosing a horror film as her first movie in four years since 揇ouble Agent

Synopsis

While in college, Min-woo loses his first love Un-hae in a car accident. Her heart is donated to Hye-won, a high school student suffering from heart problems. Many years later, Hye-won is a professional florist with a bright and healthy personality. She is happily settled and engaged to her long-time boyfriend, Jung-jae.

Min-woo comes back from his studies in Italy, but is still grieving over his first love. Jun-ah, Jung-jae’s sister, is in love with Min-woo, who was her senior in Italy. She comes back from her studies as well, to track Min-woo down.

Hye-won sprains her ankle while hiking in the hills. She meets Min-woo who was hiking, and both spend a night in the hills where Min-woo takes care of Hye-won. During the chanced encounter, Min-woo finds many similarities between Hye-won and his deceased girlfriend, and is immediately attracted to her. Hye-won in turn notices that her heart beats in an uncontrollable manner when Min-woo is around, and is puzzled by the response. As Min-woo thinks Hye-won is married, they part ways without exchanging each other’s names and contact details.

As fate would have it, Min-woo and Hye-won have another chanced meeting at the hometown (tea garden) of Un-hae. They spend an unforgettable day at the tea garden, both feeling a connection. But they do not manage to exchange any information again this time. But as destiny has charted out for them, Min-woo and Hye-won will meet again because of the Kara Holiday Resort project.

Jung-jae’s hotel chain buys over a Holiday Resort and is planning to have it renovated. Min-woo’s proposal (who is an Artistic Director for such projects) is accepted as the winning bid.

When Min-woo and Hyw-won meet for the third time, both are formally introduced, and find out that they will be working on the project together. Min-woo also finds out that Hye-won is not married but engaged to Jung-jae. Min-woo sees his first love's shadow in Hye-won, and believes that Hye-won is the second person to let him love again. And with the commencement of the Holiday Resort project, the love lives of the 4 leads start to get complicated.

As both interact more during the project, Jung-jae notices the mutual attraction, and pushes for Hye-won to have their engagement ceremony. On the day of the engagement, Hye-won faints, and is admitted to the hospital. While she is hospitalized, Hye-won has a dream. She dreams that someone gave her encouragement, and a hand to lead her out of her coma. When she awakes, she thinks the person is Jung-jae. But later, when Hye-won eventually finds out that the person giving her those encouragements is Min-woo, she realizes that she is also in love with him.

Against all odds, Min-woo and Hye-won end up together. However, as both Jung-jae and Jung-ah refuse to give up easily, their union becomes strained with the guilt and emotional baggage of their previous relationships.

When it is eventually revealed that Un-hae’s heart is beating in Hye-won, it creates a further rift in their fragile relationship as both are confused whether their inexplicable attraction is due to this common link that they share, Un-hae’s heart. Min-woo is overcome with guilt on his treatment of Hye-won as Un-hae’s replacement. Hye-won is also unsure of her feelings for Min-woo, and as she does not wish to constantly remind Min-woo of Un-hae with her presence, Hye-won decides to break up with Min-woo.

Min-woo tries relentlessly to win Hye-won back, but convinced that he is burdened with his deceased girlfriend’s shadow in her, Hye-won decides to go back to Jung-jae and marry him to let Min-woo give up on her entirely.

On her wedding day, Hye-won finds out that Min-woo is leaving for Italy to continue his studies. And on his way to the airport, Min-woo drops by the hotel to take a last peek at Hye-won. Hye-won spots him with the distinct heartbeat she feels when Min-woo is around. She chases after his car and faints. Her condition has become critical as her body is rejecting the transplanted heart. In order to save her life, she has to go through a major operation. Hye-won is unwilling to have another operation, as she will possibly be bed-ridden for the rest of her life.

Jung-jae begs Min-woo to convince Hye-won to undergo the operation, and Min-woo agrees to talk to her. Hye-won agrees to Min-woo’s plea, but in exchange requests that Min-woo leaves Korea. Jung-jae lies to Min-woo about the results of the operations, informing him that Hye-won died during the operation.

But Hye-won actually survives the operation, and receives a man-made heart instead. 3 years later, Min-woo returns to Korea for another project. Both leads have another meeting, and Hye-won’s heart starts to beat and respond the same way when she passes by Min-woo.

Director Bong Joon-ho Expresses Confidence in Korean Movies
2006-06-29

Director Bong Joon-ho has expressed his confidence that Korean movies will not
lose the success they have enjoyed in spite of the screen quota cut.

"The screen quota for Korean movies will be halved from 146 days a year from
July 1, but there are many good Korean movies waiting to be released, including
Fly, Daddy, Fly, Dasepo Naughty Girls and The Korean Peninsula. I have high
expectations that these movies will do well although the film industry is
institutionally at stake due to the screen quota cut," Bong said in front of the
Kyobo Building in Gwanghwamun, Seoul on Wednesday when he staged a one
-man protest against the screen quota cut. He is the 141st person to stage the
protest being carried out by a series of actors and directors.

He added that he is optimistic that the Korean film industry will see a good time
again in the second half of the year, if there is enough public interest and demand
for Korean movies.

Regarding a picket sign he was carrying that read The screen quota cut destroys
cultural diversity, and the Korea-US FTA destroys the economy,
he said that the
first part of the statement is what he thinks as a movie director and the latter part
as a citizen.

In response to opposition to the screen quota, the director stressed that the screen
quota is not a system that guarantees the monopoly of the Korean film
industry. "It is aimed at preventing Hollywood movies from monopolizing the
Korean market. And its ultimate purpose is to create a sound market where
culturally diverse movies from Korean and Hollywood movies to European and
Asian movies all exist together," he said.

Finally, when asked about how he feels ahead of the release of his new movie The
Host
on July 27, Bong said that he always feels as if he were a fish on a chopping
board when he has a work about to be released. "I am so anxious and nervous
that I am having sleepless nights. But I did my best and do not have any
regrets," he added.
