Yao Ming slam dunks MJ in auction
BEIJING: Houston Rocket Yao Ming slam dunked NBA legend Michael Jordan at a charity auction here, with a pair of the centre抯 shoes fetching nearly 10 times more than a Chicago Bulls jersey.
The signed shoes and some other items went for 3.6mil yuan (US$480,000) at the Thursday night event, while the jersey signed and worn by Jordan during the 1996 NBA finals sold for a paltry 380,000 yuan, the First newspaper reported.
The president of one of China抯 biggest beverage companies, Huiyuan, also received two front row seats to the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony and a Games banner signed by NBA stars and China抯 national basketball team for his winning bid.
But with Olympic opening ceremony tickets selling for up to 5,000 yuan each, it was clear that Yao Ming抯 shoes were the top attraction.
A total of 6.75mil yuan was raised at the auction attended by a bevy of Chinese movie and pop stars, with Yao Ming contributing another 250,000 yuan to top up the proceeds that will go to help educate impoverished Chinese children. |

Men face tough tests before heading to Korat
PENANG: The national men's basketball team will get stiff tests ahead of their challenge in the Korat SEA Games.
They will play as Penang Malaysia in the Chief Minister Cup tournament, which will be held at the Han Chiang Indoor Stadium here from Oct 20-27. The annual championship has been upgraded from a South-East Asian affair to an Asian invitational tournament.
The Penang Basketball Association (PBA) assistant secretary, Ooi Chee Keong, said yesterday that the tournament offering a total purse of RM20,000 would feature top sides in Asia.
The national team have been drawn in Group A with China's Tianjin and the national teams of India and Singapore. Group B comprise Filipino professionals Spring Cooking Oil, Iran youth, Indonesian league champions Satria Muda and Thailand.
The top two teams in the groups qualify for crossover semi-finals.
''The tournament will serve the national team well ahead of the SEA Games. It will also be a treat for basketball fans in Penang,'' said Chee Keong.
The last time basketball was played in the SEA Games in Vietnam in 2003, Malaysia won the bronze behind the Philippines and Thailand. The target in Korat is to win at least the silver medal.
There are now 16 players in the team, who are in Taiwan for a tournament and the Malaysia Basketball Association (Maba) general secretary, Tan See Wah, said that the final 12 players for the Games would be named after the assignment in Penang.
Meanwhile, tickets for matches in the Chief Minister's Cup have been priced at RM10 (preliminaries) and RM25 (semi-finals and final). Season tickets are available at RM70. |

Bee Chuan determined to lead team to another basketball gold medal
PETALING JAYA: Two years is a long time and Low Bee Chuan, who is the captain of the women抯 national basketball team for the first time, is determined to rally the team to another successful campaign in the Korat SEA Games in December.
Basketball was dropped from the SEA Games programme at the last minute in Manila two years ago because the international governing body suspended the Philippines BA due to political infighting.
Malaysia thus saw the loss of one gold medal and reduced the women players to tears.
Bee Chuan put off her plans to retire after Manila to commit herself to another SEA Games campaign.
The regular team skipper, Yoong Sze Yuin, has since quit playing and is now the assistant coach to Tan See Wah.

The baton has been passed to the 30-year-old Bee Chuan to lead the team in Korat.
Bee Chuan, who has been playing for the team since 1999, said it could have been her fifth SEA Games campaign if they had competed in Manila.

Malaysia thrash Indonesia in Seaba opener
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia started on an impressive note by chalking a big win over Indonesia in the South-East Asia Basketball Association (Seaba) championship for women in Phuket on Monday.
In their first meeting since the Vietnam SEA Games in 2003, Malaysia won 99-58. The relatively new national side, captained by Low Bee Chuan for the first time, led 61-34 at half time.
Malaysia will be defending the SEA Games title in Korat in December and a strong outing in the five-team competition this week will be a big boost to their confidence.
Coach Tan See Wah was satisfied with the performance of the team against the Indonesians.

Malaysia bag second straight win in Phuket
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia chalked up their second win in the South-East Asia Basketball Association (Seaba) championship for women with a 90-64 win over Singapore in Phuket on Tuesday.
Malaysia had, in the opening match the previous day, cruised to a 99-58 victory over Indonesia.
Their next match is against Thailand and coach Tan See Wah is looking forward to gauging the strength of their main rivals at the SEA Games in Korat in December.
See Wah expects the Thais to stage a strong rebound, especially after they were beaten 76-80 by the Philippines on Tuesday.
It was the second straight win for the Philippines, who defeated Indonesia 70-54.
The top four teams after the preliminary round will advance to the next stage where the top team will play the fourth-placed side and the second-placed team will take on the third-placed side.
The winners of the crossover matches will contest for the title and the losers will play off for third place.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia suffered their second defeat in as many days when they were beaten 65-67 by the Philippines in the South-East Asia Basketball Association (Seaba) championship for women in Phuket yesterday.
Malaysia led by one point until the last minute of the fourth quarter but conceded defeat after top scorer Chow Siao Foong was ejected for a foul.
Malaysia had also lost 70-77 to Thailand on Wednesday even though they led for the first three quarters of the match.
The two defeats meant that Malaysia are destined to finish third in the five-team first stage of competition. The Philippines topped the group by winning all four matches.

Malaysia beat Indonesia to finish third in Phuket
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia earned a consolation third place finish when they beat Indonesia 71-49 in the women抯 South-East Asia Basketball Association (Seaba) championship in Phuket yesterday.
Hosts Thailand beat the Philippines 66-49 to win the title.
The Philippines had been unbeaten in the first round stage of competition. They also beat the Thais 80-76.
Malaysia, who lost 80-86 to the Thais on Friday, will now return home to prepare for the defence of the SEA Games title in Korat in December. |

Men抯 team succumb to Thais in bronze playoff
PENANG: The national men's basketball chief coach Sim Sin Heng admitted there is still much work to be done if his charges are to meet the silver-medal target set for them in the Korat SEA Games.
Malaysia went down 65-79 to Thailand in the playoff for third place in the Penang Chief Minister's Asian invitation tournament here on Saturday night.
There were high hopes on the Malaysians finishing third, especially after their heroic 77-76 victory over China's professional outfit Tianjin in the group stage and a battling 71-83 loss to eventual champions Iran in the semi-finals.
But all the good work came undone with a listless first-half display against the Thais, who are considered one of the main contenders for medals in the SEA Games.

1,500 Players To Compete In Petronas 3-on-3 Challenge
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 4 (Bernama) -- About 1,500 players from 500 teams are expected to compete in the Petronas Champion of Champion 3-on-3 basketball championship on Feb 15 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Malaysian Amateur Basketball Association (MABA) secretary Tan See Wah said the fifth edition of the championship would also feature eight teams from the Wheel Chair Basketball Association of Malaysia, competing in a special event for paralympic athletes.
"It is a new beginning and initiative to develop sports for the disabled, especially wheel chair basketball in the country," he told reporters here today.
See Wah said the 3-on-3 competition introduced in 1993 had seen an increased participation from non-Chinese basketball players in recent years with a 30 per cent increase registered in 2007 and 48 per cent increase last year.

Basketball tips from Aussie pro

AUSTRALIAN basketball professional Benjamin Knight was enthusiastic about sharing his experience with a group of youngsters at a coaching clinic at Butterfly Park in Klang.
The towering Knight, who had played professional basketball in Italy and Singapore, showed the participants several tricks involved in the game.
The participants, mostly teenagers, were game for the challenge by the 2.03m tall Knight. They were put through a series of drills as well as tactics.

Knight said he was impressed with the participants.
揑 am happy to be here tonight. Being a basketball player, I am keen to see more youngsters actively involved in the game. The youngsters showed their commitment in training. There should be more similar clinics for the players to improve their skills,拻 he said.
Knight and international Ooi Ban Sin spent almost two hours with the youngsters.
The coaching clinic was part of the promotional efforts for the third leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge to be held at the AEON Bukit Tinggi, Klang on June 28.
The challenge is organised by Ossia World of Golf, the distributors of AND1 brand in Malaysia, and supported by Milo as the official beverage. StarMetro is the official media, Fly FM the official radio station while WCT is the official venue sponsor.

The Malaysian Basketball Asso-ciation (MABA) has sanctioned the challenge.

Besides the challenge, participants will also get the chance to be involved in other activities like In search of Freetsylist competition, In search of MC competition, Beat box competition and AND1 Streetball video game challenge as well as lucky draw offering AND1 limited edition NBA & Mixtape signature shoes.
Today, the AND1 basketball coaching panel will be at the SJK(C) Khai Tee in Pasir Penambang, Kuala Selangor for a two-hour clinic.
