Kaiser eyes Van der Vaart

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer would love to see Hamburg's Rafael van der Vaart lining up in the Bavarian's colours next season. The Dutch midfielder ranks highly in Bayern's summer shopping list, although Hamburg are reluctant to let him go.

"He would be the one," Beckenbauer said. "He would be outstanding for us. But I do not think Hamburg will let him go."

Since his transfer from Ajax back in 2005,Van der Vaart has been somewhat of an enigma and although there is no doubting his natural talent, his progress at Hamburg has been hampered by injury and erratic form.

Van der Vaart has won 41 caps for the Netherlands and was made captain of Hamburg at the beginning of this season.

Carlos: Don't blame me

RealMadrid defender Roberto Carlos said the pitch was responsible for themistake that allowed Bayern Munich to take the lead after 10 seconds oftheir Champions League game on Wednesday.



The33-year-old Brazilian lost control of the ball to Bayern winger HasamSalihamidzic when he received a pass from team mate Fernando Gago afterthe kickoff.
Salihamidzic raced down the right flank and supplied a perfect pass for Makaay to slide a shot past keeper Iker Casillas.


"Theball bobbled off the surface and bounced just in front of me," theformer Brazilian international was quoted as saying in sports dailyMarca on Thursday. "The pitch wasn't in good condition and it was areal shame.tak ngaku lagik tu


"We didn't concede the goal because of a lack of concentration, it was because the ball bobbled when I got it."


Makaay'sstrike was the fastest goal scored in a Champions League match beatingthe previous record set by Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva who scoredafter 20 seconds against PSV Eindhoven in September 2002.


Real's sporting director Predrag Mijatovic appeared to disagree with Roberto Carlos's explanation.


"Webroke another record by conceding the quickest goal in the ChampionsLeague," he told reporters after the match. "We didn't start the matchwith the right levels of concentration and that surprised me."


Carlos,who has won three European Cups and three league titles in his 11seasons at Real, quit international soccer after Brazil's 1-0 World Cupquarter-final defeat by France in which he was widely blamed forfailing to mark goalscorer Thierry Henry.

Hitzfeld to stay on as Bayern coach

BERLIN, March 15 (Reuters) - Ottmar Hitzfeld will stay on as coach of Bayern Munich for at least another season, the Bundesliga club announced on Thursday.

Bayern said in a statement that Hitzfeld had reached agreement with the club on a new one-year deal at a meeting on Wednesday.

'We are delighted we could reach such a quick and easy agreement,' Bayern manager Uli Hoeness said.

'It was a mutual decision to make the new contract just for one year. In due course we'll review the situation and agree on whether to extend it into the middle or long term.'

Hitzfeld, who led Bayern to victory in the Champions League in 2001, returned for a second spell in place of Felix Magath at the start of February.

Early results were not good, with Bayern losing their first match 3-0 away to Nuremberg and managing just one win in the first four games.

They have since won two and drawn one of the last three Bundesliga games to revive hopes of a third successive league title, with the gap behind leaders Schalke 04 now down to six points with nine games to play.

The team also made up a 3-2 deficit in the Champions League to beat Real Madrid and clinch a place in the quarter-finals, where they will face AC Milan.

Adidas to seek arbitration in dispute with federation

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - Adidas is seeking arbitration in its dispute with the German soccer federation over a contract to be the official supplier of its national soccer team, which has received a lucrative offer from rival Nike.

Adidas contends that a previous agreement was effectively extended in August 2006 until at least 2014.
The DFB argues that the deal ends in 2011. Both sides have consulted legal experts to find backing for their respective positions.

Adidas said in a statement Thursday that the sporting goods company had been unable to reach agreement with DFB and that it was taking the matter to arbitration "in order to achieve an objective decision in a timely manner."

German news reports earlier this week said Adidas had doubled its sponsorship offer to ?22 million (US$29 million) a year. The DFB has acknowledged a new offer but has not given details.

The new offer is still significantly lower than the one tabled by Nike, the word's biggest maker of sports apparel that is making an aggressive push into soccer.

Nike has offered ?500 million (US$660) for an eight-year deal, plus ?100 million (US$132 million) in other benefits.

German news reports said Nike has invited a DFB delegation to visit its headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.

Rosicky to lead Czech Republic against Germany in Euro 2008 qualifier

PRAGUE, Czech Republic: Tomas Rosicky will be fit in time to play for the Czech Republic in next week's European Championship qualifying game against Germany.
The 26-year-old Arsenal midfielder is recovering from a groin injury, but Czech Republic coach Karel Bruckner said Tuesday his captain would be healthy.
"Rosicky will play," Bruckner said. "He said that his condition has improved and that he should be fit to play in a Premier League game on Wednesday (against Aston Villa)."

Bayern Munich left-back Philipp Lahm will be switched to the right of defence for Germany's Euro 2008 qualifying encounter with the Czech Republic in Prague on Saturday.

Borussia Moenchengladbach's Marcell Jansen will take Lahm's place on the left, coach Joachim Loew indicated Monday.

"That's the solution which presents itself. It's something we've done before and therefore shouldn't be a problem," said Loew.

The Germany coach has to juggle at the back following injuries to Arne Friedrich of Hertha Berlin and Clemens Fritz of Werder Bremen, who would normally be the candidates for the right-back position.

Loew is hoping Borussia Dortmund defender Christoph Metzelder will recover from a clash of heads in Saturday's goalless draw with Nuremberg which left him with a bruised and swollen left eye.

If fit, Metzelder will partner Werder Bremen's Per Mertesacker in central defence as he did at last summer's World Cup.

"Christoph and Per Mertesacker are two important pillars in central defence who will give us the security at the back which we will need in Prague," said Loew.

Loew is without a total of nine regulars including striker Miroslav Klose who is serving a suspension.

Three newcomers - Stefan Kiessling, Gonzalo Castro (both Bayer Leverkusen) and Roberto Hilbert (VfB Stuttgart) - are in the squad which will meet up in Frankfurt on Tuesday.

Both Germany and the Czech Republic have 10 points from 4 matches in Group D, but the Germans top the group on goal difference.
