Bundesliga Team Of The Week: Round 13
Mathew Burt runs the rule over the best in Germany over the weekend’s matches in Round 13 of an exciting Bundesliga. Bayern Munich finally suffered their first defeat of the season going down 3-1 to last season’s champions Stuttgart. Werder Bremen moved to within one point of the leaders after a Diego inspired 4-0 win over Karlsruhe.
Bayer Leverkusen climbed into the top five with a 2-1 win at Wolfsburg, while N黵nburg’s nightmare season continued with a 3-1 loss to Bielefeld.

Goalkeeper:
1) Rene Adler (Bayer Leverkusen)
Leverkusen’s 22 year old keeper was cited by trainer Michael Skibbe as one of the main reasons behind his side’s 2-1 win over Wolfsburg. The youngster pulled off a string of fine saves to deny Marcelinho, Krzynowek and Grafite. For a long while it looked like he could not be beaten, only for Manuel Friedrich to put through his own net to deny Adler the clean sheet.
Defenders:
2) Ludovic Magnin (Stuttgart)
The Swiss defender was one of the driving forces behind the first half blitz that sent Bayern Munich crashing to their first loss of the season. It was his surging run and cross that set up the first fortunate goal for Gomez, and his precise long pass to Hilbert started off the move, which led to the second from Bast黵k.
3) Malik Fathi (Hertha Berlin)
Hertha’s Berlin-born German A-international Malik Fathi was their top performers under difficult conditions at the Olympic Stadium against Hannover. A heavy snowstorm prior to kick-off made the pitch extremely difficult, but Fathi played a large part in keeping Hannover at bay.
4) Benedikt H鰓edes (Schalke)
Schalke’s 19 year old defender, thrown in at the deep end, performed admirably for the K鰊igsblauen against Hamburg and didn’t look out of place. Called up to replace the suspended Bordon, the youngster nearly capped a fine performance with a goal, only for David Jarolim to clear his header off the line.
5) Hans Sarpei (Bayer Leverkusen)
The former Wolfsburg man produced another measured performance at the back for Leverkusen as they climbed to fifth. Sarpei is fast becoming a key part of one of the meanest defences in the Bundesliga.
Midfielders:
6) Daniel Jensen (Werder Bremen)
The Danish midfielder laid on two assists for Diego and Naldo as he impressed against Karlsruhe. With Diego running the show and taking all the plaudits, the work of Daniel Jensen should not go unmentioned.
7) Thomas Hitzlsperger (Stuttgart)
It is no coincidence that the recent return to form of Stuttgart has come at the time when the ‘Hammer’ has returned from injury. Against Bayern he was a driving force in midfield and although we didn’t see any of his trademark long range goals, he made sure that the Bayern midfield didn’t get a foothold in the game.
8) Stefan Kie遧ing (Bayer Leverkusen)
A goal and an assist sent Bayer Leverkusen on their way to an important win at the Volkswagen Arena to take them up to fifth in the table. His shot forced Simon Jentzsch to parry out to the incoming Barnetta for the first goal, before he added the second himself in the second half.
9) Diego (Werder Bremen)
The Brazilian midfielder’s performance against Karlsruhe at the Weser Stadion was simply sublime. His two first half goals put Werder firmly in the driving seat, and he teased and toyed with KSC throughout the game.
Forwards:
10) Enrico Kern (Hansa Rostock)
A hat trick with his right foot sealed an important win for Rostock in the Eastern derby at the DKB Arena. The first was an unstoppable drive from the edge of the area, and the second a lob over the advancing Tremmel only a minute after the Cottbus equaliser. His third goal came fifteen minutes from time after Energie failed to clear the ball sufficiently.
11) Mario Gomez (Stuttgart)
Two goals, albeit one of them in off his stomach, against Bayern Munich set Stuttgart on their way to a confidence boosting victory. The way VfB cut Bayern open and with ‘Super Mario’ Gomez getting his name on the score sheet was reminiscent of the glory days of last season.
Honourable mentions:
After Stuttgart’s great win over Bayern Munich, mentions should also go to Yildiray Bast黵k, Roberto Hilbert and striker Cacau for the performances.
Bochum’s stand-in keeper Rene Renno played well in the Friday win over Duisburg, as did Stanislav Sestak.
Ivan Rakitic was one of Schalke’s top performers against Hamburg, while Rafael van der Vaart led from the front for HSV with a top display.
Hugo Almeida grabbed his seventh goal of the season in Werder’s 4-0 win over Karlsruhe.

Bayern's blip baffles bosses
BERLIN (AFP) - League leaders Bayern Munich's 3-1 surprise defeat at VfB Stuttgart on Saturday was the German giants' first defeat of the season and has left the club's senior figures reeling in shock.
Having enjoyed a six-point gap at the top of the Bundesliga in the middle of October, Bayern have had their lead trimmed back to a single point after they were humbled in Stuttgart.
Bayern's water-tight defence had only conceded four goals in 12 league games all season, but that record was smashed by Stuttgart as Germany's player of the year Mario Gomez scored twice to put the home side 3-0 up at half-time.
And the second-half dismissal of Brazilian defender Lucio was the final nail in Bayern's coffin.
Italian World Cup winner Luca Toni scored a late consolation goal, but it was too little, too late as Bayern's run of 24 competitive games without defeat came to a spectacular end.
"You're obviously going to suffer minor setbacks at some point during a season," said Bayern captain Oliver Kahn, whose side now has a two-week break thanks to next weekend's Euro 2008 qualifiers.
"We're still top of the table. If we now go on and win the league, no-one will ever mention this game again.
"We were lethargic in the first half, we didn't go looking for the ball, and we didn't win the ball.
"We never came near the attitude we needed for this match, so there was no way we were going to come away with anything.
"We've now got 14 days to get over it, and then we'll be back with a vengeance.
"We'll sit down and analyse the situation, but we're not going to panic."
But Bayern have now gone four games without a win, which is not acceptable for the ambitious Munich side.
Scoreless draws with mid-table Bundesliga sides Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund plus the defeat in Stuttgart, as well as last week's 2-2 UEFA Cup draw with Bolton Wanderers means the German giants have hit something of a low-point.
"It's not been a good week for us," said Bayern's chairman of the board Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as his side played their second game in less than 48 hours.
"Unfortunately, we failed to win in the UEFA Cup on Thursday, and today we've deservedly lost for the first time this season.
"Our problems started two or three weeks ago. The task now is to regroup and start a new run."
Having splashed out 69 million euros last summer to recruit a team of stars including French midfielder Franck Ribery and world-class strikers Toni and Miroslav Klose, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld was far from impressed.
"We slept through the first quarter of an hour," said Hitzfeld, whose side have a two week break before they play VfL Wolfsburg. "We didn't show enough aggression, we tried to play our way to success. "We always knew it would be extremely tough in Stuttgart, so I fail to understand why we weren't up for it physically. "We were badly organised at the back and non-existent up front. "We gave our opponents all the encouragement they needed. "We woke up after their second, we had a promising spell and we were close to pulling one back. "If we'd scored, I think we'd have gone on and taken something from the game, but it was unbelievably difficult at 3-0 down." With Werder Bremen and Hamburg just one point behind, a few more poor results in the Bundesliga could see Bayern toppled from top spot which would trigger alarm bells in Munich. |

Czech manager changes squad for Euro 2008 qualifiers
PRAGUE (AFP) - Czech manager Karel Bruckner on Tuesday added defender Tomas Zapotocny and midfielder Jiri Kladrubsky to his squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Slovakia on November 17 and San Marino four days later.
Zapotocny, who plays in the Italian league for Udinese, and Sparta Prague's Kladrubsky will stand in for injured Tomas Ujfalusi and Libor Sionko, squad spokesman Lukas Tucek told the CTK agency.
Sionko was injured playing for FC Copenhagen in the UEFA Cup clash against Panathinaikos last week.
The Czechs have already qualified for the Euro 2008 final stages after thrashing Germany 3-0 last month. |

Germany call Jones into squad for Euro 2008 qualifiers
Frankfurt - Germany coach Joachim Loew Friday called up Schalke 04 midfielder Jermaine Jones into a 24-man squad for next week's final Euro 2008 qualifying games. It is the first time 26-year-old Jones has appeared in the Germany set up, but the former Eintracht Frankurt player - the son of a US serviceman - is enjoying a good first season at Schalke.
"We have always said we were keeping an eye on Jermaine Jones, He has been playing well in the Bundesliga in the last few weeks and has convinced us with his dynamism," Loew said.
"We want to use the last two internationals of the year to give him an opportunity and to get to know him better within the circle of the national team."
Stuttgart defender Serdar Tasci, who is of Turkish descent, is another uncapped player in the squad, although he has been called up before by Loew.
Also back after long absences are striker Oliver Neuville of second-division Borussia Moenchengladbach, Hanover striker Mike Hanke and Werder Bremen midfielder Tim Borowski.
Group D leaders Germany, who were the first team to qualify for next summer's European Championships in Austria and Switzerland, play Cyprus in Hanover on Saturday, followed by Wales in Frankfurt four days later.
Loew continues to be without injured captain Michael Ballack, while also absent through injury are midfielder Bernd Schneider, defender Christian Pander and strikers Kevin Kuranyi and David Odonkor.

Neuville, Hanke and Borowski return
One unexpected veteran joins Germany's 23-player lineup for the upcoming games against Cyprus and Wales, both qualifying matches for the UEFA 2008 European championships. German coach Joachim L鰓 called upon Oliver Neuville, who has been absent from the team for close to a year. Neuville (65 caps) plays for Borussia M鰊chengladbach, leaders in the 2. Bundesliga.
Schalke 04 midfielder Jermaine Jones will not make his Germany debut next weekend after sustaining an injury in his club's 1-1 draw with Hamburg on Saturday. The 26-year-old was named in Joachim Loew's squad for the two remaining qualifiers against Cyprus and Wales, but has had to withdraw after picking up an ankle injury from the Bundesliga clash.
Germany play Cyprus on Saturday in Hanover. Four days later in Frankfurt, the Mannschaft faces Wales in the conclusive game of the qualifying round. Germany are already qualified for the UEFA EURO 2008, but still have a shot at clinching first place in Group D.
"We never scratched Neuville off the list", said Joachim L鰓. "Oliver has been performing well recently, he has scored goals and he has shown, that he is in shape. His speed fits our style of playing." The 34-year old Neuville's career highlight so far has been his 1-0 goal against Poland at the last FIFA World Cup. Germany advanced to the round of 16 due to the win.
Bremen's midfielder Tim Borowski returns after a long injury-related hiatus. He had last played in white and black on February 7 in a 3-1 win over Switzerland. Another returnee to the national team is Hanover's forward Mike Hanke.
Joachim L鰓 appeals to his players to "finish-up on a very successful qualifying run. These last two games in front of our own fans should serve as a launch pad towards the EURO 2008." |
