MALACCA: It could have been a scene from the movie Twister.
Tiles and tables flew, roofs were ripped off and trees and street lamps uprooted when a massive thunderstorm hit parts of Malacca just before midnight on Sunday.
Hotel manager James Pang, 45, was among those who witnessed the storm's wrath. He said he was awakened by a very loud noise outside his Taman Aman house.

Twister damages four boats

MERSING: A twister was spotted heading towards Teluk Buih here on Friday, and its ripple effect damaged 10 stalls and four fishing boats near Jalan Makam, about 6km away.
In the 3.30pm incident, stall owners in Jalan Makam saw the twister heading towards them and ran for shelter.
One of them, Rosli Derani, 42, said, he prayed hard that the twister would not head directly towards them.
"I believed that my prayers were answered as it headed towards Teluk Buih which is uninhabited. The incident lasted 10 minutes," he said.
However, the strong winds that the twister brought with it caused several fishing boats to be thrown onto the jetty nearby. Stalls were also damaged.
The twister was believed to have started from Pulau Setindan near Pantai Teluk Buih. This was the second such incident in the district this week.
The twister at Kampung Air Papan damaged several fiber boats.
A affected resident, Muslim Abdullah, 46, said he was at the jetty when he saw the twister and ran towards the beach for safety.
Weatherman says there will be more waterspouts

MERSING: The Meteorological De­­part­­­­ment predicts that the changing climate could result in more waterspouts in certain areas such as the one that occurred here on Friday.
Its forecasting director Saw Bun Liong said similar waterspouts had been detected in Penang, Selangor, Malacca, Sarawak and Sabah.
"Such waterspouts can also be stronger in regions which favour development of stronger thunderstorms," he said, adding that the one in Mersing was caused by converging southerly and south-westerly winds over the coastal waters of east Johor.
"Over the past few years, there have been more reports of such weather phenomenon," he said, adding that this could be due to either the changing climate or the greater availability of video recorders and cameras for people to record.
Saw advised the public to be careful and not to get in the way of such destructive weather phenomenon.
Villagers here are living in fear after a series of freak weather phenomena since last week that affected the livelihood of fishermen and damaged their houses.
A twister hit Teluk Buih in Kampung Air Papan on Friday causing damage to fishermen's boats.
Two days prior to that, the roofs of about 20 houses at Kampung Pengkalan Batu, about 10km away, were blown off due to strong winds and heavy rain.
Villagers claim they have seen twisters at sea previously, but it was the first time one had hit land.
Kampung Air Papan village chief Mohd Asri Jaafar, 55, said the incident had happened at about 3.30pm Friday.
Mohd Asri also reported that two boats had been sunk and a further three had been damaged beyond repair, and estimated that the total cost of the damage from twisters, would range between RM50,000 and RM60,000 (S$20,365 and S$24,438).
Another villager Aziz Abu Bakar, 52, said the twister was a big blow to the fishermen in the village as their income had already been unstable and depended significantly on their catch.

Enormous waterspout appears at tourist attraction in Malaysia
An enormous waterspout has suddenly appeared in Malaysia's famous tourist attraction at Penang city's Gurney Drive seafront. Thousands watched in shock on Monday night.
The stunning sight of the spiraling column of air moving on the sea, lasted about 20 minutes before easing. Strong winds also uprooted trees and damaged several stalls.
Meanwhile, the ensuing storm has wreaked havoc in various parts of the city center, causing flash floods in several low-lying areas.

These two pictures captured by The Star reader Ng Hock Hoo show a mini twister sweeping through Mata Air, Jejawi, Perlis.
Roofs were blown off while signboards were uprooted and houses damaged during the incident, which took place on Thursday evening. A van was also overturned.
Ng, an assistant maintenance manager in his 40s, captured the images while driving from Mata Air to his home in Arau.
“I have seen something similar before but never this close. I have also never seen this kind of damage before.
“It happened just before a heavy rain and thunderstorm. The ‘twister’ started moving a few kilometres ahead of me and caused a lot of damage and a traffic jam,” he said yesterday.
A Meteorological Department forecast officer said an intense thunderstorm could create very strong winds.
“There will be an up-and-down draft if there is a strong thunderstorm cell. There can be very strong winds when a thunderstorm is forming,” the officer said.
However, it was not a twister or tornado since it was small with low magnitude, the officer said.
His counterpart in George Town said that it was an isolated incident, reports FONG KEE SOON.
“Our radars in Butterworth and Bayan Lepas did not detect any unusual cloud formations or strong winds associated with cyclones over the last two days,” he said, adding that the department would study the video recording of the phenomenon to determine the causes.
Bernama reported that the gale damaged more than 50 houses, foodstalls and motor workshops in Jejawi, near Kangar. The van, belonging to a security firm, was at a workshop.
No one was reported injured in the 6pm incident, according to Perlis Welfare Committee chairman Mansor Jusoh.
Rohana Abdul Rahman, 52, said she was alone at home when she felt the house move.
“All of a sudden, the front door gave way and the roof blew off,” said Rohana, who lives with her husband and daughter Raja Raine Shasha Raja Shariman, 30, who works at Universiti Malaysia Perlis.
Mansor said the gale caused damage estimated at more than RM100,000 but the actual amount was expected to be known after a welfare department census.
He said a relief centre was opened last night but the victims preferred to stay with relatives.
He said Baitulmal Perlis and the Perlis Human Development Unit would help the victims repair their houses.
The Yayasan Pok dan Kassim provided RM100 and rice to each of the victims.

malaysia sebenarnya setiap tahun ada puting belliung nie cuma taklah sebesar tornado kat amerika syarikat nun ....tadi cik man search kat youtube , kat PD ada berlaku puting beliung di atas laut , ada la dalam jarak 500 meter dari pantai...... berlaku pada tahun 2009 ....

video yg kat melaka tu - tak nampak pun puting beliung atau "corong" yg terbentuk ..
maybe angin baru nak "tergulung" kot .. sbb tengok pada cara khemah tu melayang ke atas,
pastu macam berpusing - pastu terjatuh balik .. hmmmm ..
selalunya kalau ribut berlaku , atap khemah akan mengikut arah angin .....puting beliung nie pulak apabila terkena sesuatu tempat tu akan menarik objek ke atas .....maybe ada puting beliung yang memang tak nampak dengan mata kasar tapi dalam bentuk yang kecil .....
kalau tengok daripada "cara" khemah tu dilayangkan, mungkin dah ada "pusaran" angin kat situ,
cuma belum cukup kuat ntok membentuk "corong" ..
sbb kalau dibawak angin - akan melayang pergi ke satu arah .. kan?
tapi ni - khemah tu melayang ke atas - berpusing - jatuh ..
ntah ye? susah gak nak cakap .. sbb khemah ni macam payung aa ..
rekabentuknya macam merintang angin .. mungkin sbb tu aa kot khemah tu berpusing camtu ..
maknanya menjadi persoalan jugak kan .....ribut atau puting beliung .....kalau tengok video tu ,peristiwa tu berlaku beberapa saat sahaja .....kalau ribut , tak sekajap macam tu ....
