SMAP's Kimutaku a different breed of idol

Six years ago this month, the public learned that Japan's most popular
male showbiz personality, Takuya Kimura, was set to marry former
singing idol Shizuka Kudo, already pregnant with his child at the time.
The press wondered how marriage and fatherhood would affect the career of
a star who had been voted Japan's sexiest man half dozen years in a row by
readers of the weekly fashion magazine an-an, not to mention the fortunes
of SMAP, the aging idol boy band he belonged to (and still does).
Though getting married doesn't stunt a male star's prospects as much as a
female star's, idols are a different breed since their appeal among
members of the opposite sex is directly linked to their availability.
Johnny's Jimusho, the talent agency that keeps a notoriously short lease
on the young men in its stable, has actively discouraged reporting of any
romantic business involving members of SMAP, KinKi Kids, TOKIO and its
other artists. It's good business sense.
There were rumors at the time that Johnny's wasn't pleased with the
marriage of Kimutaku, as Kimura is nicknamed, but there was nothing they
could do about it. A long article in the December issue of Cyzo about the
talent agency implies that one of Johnny's managers close to SMAP once
threatened to leave the agency to start his own -- and that he would take
Kimura with him.
For any other artist, leaving a talent agency without the agency's
blessing is career suicide. The talent will be blackballed for years,
unable to find work with producers who use the agency.
But Kimura is different. He would have no problem finding work and
Johnny's would be helpless. In any case, domestic life has not dimmed his
popularity, but maybe that's because Johnny's has been as successful in
keeping a lid on the particulars of Kimura's family as it has been in
stifling reports about TOKIO vocalist Tomoya Nagase's rumored romance with
a certain superstar J-pop singer or SMAP member Shingo Katori's long-term
live-in relationship with a non-celebrity.
 
Johnny's lets Kimutaku do whatever he wants, and what he wants is to be
taken seriously as an actor. This is hardly a breakout ambition, since all
idols get plenty of work in TV dramas, movies and on the stage.
Kimutaku is the most sought-after TV actor in Japan. His starring vehicles
garner huge ratings, but being a star in a dramatic serial that has been
written to take advantage of the star's specific appeal is not necessarily
the same as being an actor; which partly explains the recent PR blitz for
Kimura's new movie.
In "Bushi no Ichibun" Kimura plays a samurai. Almost everyone in
Johnny's has worked at one point or another in NHK's Sunday night
historical dramas, but "Bushi no Ichibun" has more to do with the
sociology and economics of samurai life than with the genre's action
prerogatives.
Kimura's character is a food taster who loses his sight after ingesting
some bad shellfish. The movie is a chamber drama that requires emotional
nuance, and in terms of accommodating whatever acting skills he possesses
to the needs of the ensemble, Kimura does a worthy job.
However, if all you had to go on was the PR, you might think he had
accomplished the thespian equivalent of scaling Mount Everest. In a series
of TV appearances, Kimura, looking genuinely embarrassed, has had to
endure countless gushing testimonials.
When other members of the cast, all veteran actors of stage and screen,
showed up on Fuji TV's "SMAPxSMAP," the only variety show that Kimutaku
appears on regularly, they spoke not about the movie but about how
wonderful Kimura was to work with. The blushing idol was spared having to
respond to the love-in since at the time he was busy preparing a meal for
his guests.
He wasn't so lucky on the full hour devoted to him by TV Asahi's
"SmaStation 6," hosted by Katori and filled with videotaped interviews of
a dozen people who have worked with Kimura over the past 18 years.
Yoji Yamada, who directed "Bushi," expressed the gist of the comments
(though not their over-the-top tenor) by saying, "He knows how to work in
a group." It was Kimura's character that was being honored, not his acting
chops.
"Bushi no Ichibun" is already a box-office smash and would have been even
without Kimura's PR participation, which seems to be an end in itself.
Everything related to Johnny's is based on the power of underestimation:
See, he's more than just a sex god. Idols are recruited as children based
on their looks, and everything they know is drilled into them.
In the Cyzo article, three of Johnny's former charges talk about how they
left the agency and had trouble finding work because they had no real
abilities, even though they had sung, danced, and acted while in the
company. "When you are in Johnny's," one said, "you don't realize how poor
your skills are." SMAP leader Masahiro Nakai often jokes about this, which
is why he channels his energies into emcee work. On New Year's Eve he will
co-host NHK's popular song contest for the third time.
It's a give-and-take situation. World-renowned stage director Yukio
Ninagawa uses Johnny's talent in his productions not because they're good
actors but to draw audiences, and if the fees they receive are less than
what they can make with one 15-second TV commercial, the stage appearances
lend the agency prestige. In the end, acting skills are beside the point.
Ironically, this tradeoff sometimes means genuine talent gets overlooked.
Here's hoping that Kazunori Ninomiya's performance in Clint
Eastwood's "Letters From Iwo Jima" is recognized for what it is -- a
moving portrayal of a reluctant soldier who will do anything to survive --
and not as another feather in Johnny's cap.
As a member of the boy band Arashi, Ninomiya was raised by the agency,
though based on his work in "Letters," it would appear he knows real life.

STORY:
BACKGROUND:
The film is about two girls of the same age and name, Nana Osaki and Nana Komatsu. They randomly meet in a train and, following a string of coincidences having to do with the number seven (pronounced ³nana² in Japanese), decide to live together in an apartment numbered 707. One is a cynical punk rocker with a demanding presence and the other is a cute, ignorant girl with an upper-middle class mindset. The two characters, despite having contrasting personalities, like and respect each other. After they met, Nana Osaki started calling Nana Komatsu ³Hachi² ("Hachiko" is the name of a famous loyal dog in Japan. Coincidentally, "hachi" means "eight" which follows ³nana²) Nana wants to make her debut to leave her ex-boyfriend, Ren, behind. Nana and Ren were in the same group once, but Ren was offered a chance to debut in Tokyo as a replacement member of Trapnest, a popular band. Realizing that following Ren would mean giving up her own dream to be a singer, she chose to cultivate her own band, Black Stones.
NANA2:
Nana's band, Black Stones, has their major label debut. Hachi is spun into a deep relationship with Takumi, the leader of Trapnest. Nana and Ren's relationship also comes to light and cause a scandal in the entertainment industry. After a series of events between the two girls and the band members, Hachi chooses to leave the apartment she shares with Nana and the two friends are far apart with only their respective partners as hope for the future. This sequel is the last installment of the original "NANA" movies.

Welcome to Morning Musume version 8.0. 13-year old Mitsui Aika is the latest member to join the ever-changing lineup of one of the most successful J-pop projects of all time. She was chosen from thousands of hopefuls in the 8th round of auditions, bringing the group to a total of nine members. Mitsui will not take part in the group's planned Kohaku appearance on New Year's Eve, but will join them formally for their spring concerts.

"Letters from Iwo Jima" is building up steam. The second of Clint Eastwood's two WWII sagas has received more accolades in the U.S., being chosen as the top movie of 2006 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association on Sunday, and ranked by the American Film Institute in their top 10 movies for the year. Like its companion piece "Flags of Our Fathers" it is a Hollywood project, but all the dialog is in Japanese. While this was thought to make it a rank outsider for any major awards, the talk about it competing for Academy Awards on February 25 is now building. Eastwood was in New York Sunday for a screening of "Letters..." followed by a reception at the Time Warner Center. Also there basking in the praise were star Watanabe Ken (47), his wife, actress Minami Kaho (42), and co-star Ihara Tsuyoshi (43). The movie opens in the U.S. on December 20, but it has already made a strong start at the box office here. It pulled in over Y200 million on its opening day on Saturday and is expected to reach Y5 billion, while "Flags..." totalled about Y1.5 billion.

Tsumabuki incites divine wrath

Tsumabuki Satoshi takes the lead in an offbeat period film based on Asada Jiro's novel "Tsukigami", adapted for the screen by the venerable team of director Furuhata Yasuo ("Railroad Man", "The Firefly") and cinematographer Kimura Daisaku.
Asada's other works adapted for film include "When the Last Sword is Drawn", "Failan" (which was made into a South Korean film starring Min-sik Choi and Cecilia Cheung), and the recent "Metro ni Notte" and "Tsubakiyama-Kacho no Nanokakan".
Tsumabuki plays a lowly but academically diligent warrior named Bessho Hikoshiro who finds himself unable to move up in the world due to the stifling caste system of the Bakumatsu era. After being expelled from the household into which he was adopted through marriage and separated from his wife and son, he moves in with his disapproving elder brother and his wife. He meets his old class rival Enomoto Takeaki, now a commander of a naval ship, and is later told by a kindly noodle shop owner that Enomoto's rise in social status came about after he prayed at a shrine in Mukojima. Stumbling home drunk one night, Hikoshiro falls down a riverbank and comes across a small run-down shrine which he is convinced is affiliated to the one in Mukojima. Pressing his hands together in prayer, he unwittingly invites the unwanted attentions of the gods of poverty, pestilence and death...
Nishida Toshiyuki plays god of poverty Iseya, Akai Hidekazu is god of pestilence Kuzuryu, and the 1200-year-old death god is embodied by 9-year-old Morisako Ei, better known as the live-action TV incarnation of venerable manga and anime character "Chibi Maruko-chan". Sato Ryuta also features. Sponichi has an early picture of Sato, Tsumabuki and Morisako in character here. Shot at Toei's studio in Uzumasa, Kyoto from late October through to late December, "Tsukigami" opens on June 23rd next year.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association on Tuesday named Kikuchi Rinko
(25) as one of six nominees for their best supporting actress award.
Last weekend, Kikuchi was named by the National Board of Review in New
York as the winner of their female Breakthrough Performance award for her
role in the Japanese segment of "Babel". She shared that award with
Jennifer Hudson of "Dreamgirls". Her performance as Chieko, a deaf mute
high school girl dealing with her budding sexuality and her mother's
suicide, has been described as "extraordinary and brave" and "compelling".
The Brad Pitt-Cate Blanchett vehicle also stars the always excellent
Yakusho Koji as Chieko's father.

Popular Okinawan rock/hip hop group ORANGE RANGE finished off their
46-date national tour on Wednesday at the Olympic Gymnasium in Sendagaya,
Tokyo. They entertained 8,000 fans with a set that ran to 25 songs. They
are scheduled to appear on this year's Kohaku Uta Gassen by live feed from
Okinawa.

It is the first time an actor has refused a nomination, other than the rare occasion when it has conflicted with a work schedule. Johnny's Jimusho, which represents Kimura, said he "doesn't want to compete with other nominees". The agency also refuses its stars' nominations for Record Taisho awards as a matter of policy. "Bushi..." was only barely eligible for this year's awards, opening on December 1, the last day for which movies could be considered. It's been a big success, taking in over Y1.7 billion at the box office. Several other of its stars have received nominations, including Dan Rei (35), Sasano Takashi (58), and Momoi Kaori (54). Sexy songstress Koda Kumi (24) has had an amazing year. And chart company Oricon have recognized that, awarding her the trophy for the artist with the biggest sales for 2006. With 12 consecutive Top 10 singles and her second greatest hits album, she amassed a whopping ¥12.7 billion in sales for the year. It proves that she is a real contender for the title of Japan's top female artist. Her main rival remains Avex label-mate and senpai Hamasaki Ayumi, the last female artist to break the ¥10-billion mark in 2003. Koda is in the sixth year of her career, which started out in the club scene. She has built a reputation largely through branding herself as a sex symbol, helping create the new adjective "ero-kakkoii" (sexy cool).
