Iraq: Jepun cadang tamat sokongan kepada AS

The Kongō class of guided missile destroyers, a modification of the United States of America (U.S.) Navy Arleigh Burke class (Flight I), serves as the core ship of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF)'s Escort Flotillas.

The Kongō class employs the highly advanced Aegis fire control system and is armed with the RIM-66 SM-2MR Block II surface-to-air missile, RUM-139 vertically launched anti-submarine rocket, the RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missile, two Mark 15 20 mm CIWS gun mounts, two torpedo mounts in a triple tube configuration, and an Oto Melara 127 mm/54 caliber gun. Its Mark 41 vertical launch system can hold 90 missiles. However, in keeping with the defensive mission of the JMSDF and passive role of the Japan Self-Defense Forces in general, the Kongō-class lacks the Tomahawk missile.

As on other ships employing the Aegis system, the superstructure is dominated by the SPY-1's phased arrays, which eliminates the need for a traditional rotating antenna. The design of the superstructure also incorporates certain stealth features, designed to reduce radar cross section of the ship; however, as a consequence, the ship is considerably more top-heavy than a typical destroyer and requires a much deeper draft. As such, operations in a littoral (coastal) environment are limited. Overall, Kongō-class destroyers are much larger than traditional destroyers and at 9,485 tons displacement come close to cruisers in size. Because of being built to different operational requirements such as for carrying extra equipments for commanding a squadron, the Kongō-class ships' internal arrangement is quite different from that of the Arleigh Burke-class ships on which their design is based.

The Kongō class vessels are being modified to serve in a theater missile defense role, with the primary intention of countering North Korean ballistic missiles. This purpose and a financial crisis made the Flight II variant of the Arleigh Burke class the choice for the follow-on class to the Tachikaze and Asakaze. The new destroyer was named Atago in 2005.

Kongō class destroyers are powered by four Ishikawajima-Harima LM2500 gas turbines.

In December 2007, Japan conducted a successful test of the SM-3 block IA against a ballistic missile aboard JDS Kongō (DDG-173). This was the first time a Japanese ship was selected to launch the interceptor missile during a test of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System. In previous tests they provided tracking and communications.

Mitsubishi Type 89 IFV

The Mitsubishi Type 89 IFV is a Japanese infantry fighting vehicle that entered service with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force in 1989. The vehicle was adopted at a low rate with 58 vehicles in service as of 1999, with a total of 70 produced by 2005. The main armament of the vehicle is a Oerlikon Contraves 35 millimeter KDE cannon.

Development of the Type 89 began in 1980, with four prototypes being produced in 1984. These prototypes were tested until 1986. It was accepted into service and type classified in 1989. When the vehicle entered production, the initial requirement was for around 300 vehicles, this however has been scaled back. By the end of 1999 just 58 were in service, and just two vehicles were purchased that year, with only a single vehicle purchased the following year. The primary contractor for the project was Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, with the main subcontractor being Komatsu Limited.

Japanese Military Technology Advance

by Richard Fisher, Jr.
Published on December 6th, 2007
ARTICLES

On November 7 and 8 in Tokyo, the Japanese Defense Ministry抯 Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI) held a briefing on its new programs, which was accompanied by a small display of many of these same programs.  Currently led by Director General Dr. Yasue Masahiro, TRDI traces its origins to the National Safety Agency抯 Research and Development Center, founded in 1952.  TRDI is responsible for developing all of Japan抯 indigenous weapon systems in cooperation with Japan抯 defense companies.  Though it has wide responsibilities, TRDI only has 1,135 formal employees, and its 2007 budget of about $1.5 billion marks a nearly 7.5 percent decline from its 2006 budget.

While Japan has remained largely dependent on imported American technology for major weapon systems since the 1950s, through the work of TRDI Japan has also succeeded in building a modern domestic defense industry dedicated to meeting Japan抯 specific requirements.  Recent TRDI successes include the new Kawasaki-built P-X four-turbofan engine maritime patrol aircraft with a TRDI designed high-bypass turbofan engine, and the new 30-ton capacity C-X twin-turbofan military transport.  While the TRDI-designed  搃ndigenous

Japan Receives First Kawasaki XP-1 Maritime Patrol Air

DATE:01/09/08
By:Seiji Hirokawa

Japan's defence ministry has taken delivery of Kawasaki Heavy Industries' prototype XP-1 maritime patrol aircraft for a long-term programme of test and evaluation activities.

Flown for the first time in September 2007, the demonstrator has completed an initial 11-month phase of testing by its prime contractor, which expects to build 70 production P-1s to replace Japan's KHI/Lockheed Martin P-3C Orions.

Handed over on 29 August at the company's Gifu site, the Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries XF-7 turbofan-powered XP-1 will now enter flight test and evaluation by the defence ministry's Technical Research and Development Institute and Japanese navy at the latter's Atsugi air base. Flight testing is expected to continue until the end of fiscal year 2015.

Jepun timbang hantar kapal tentera perangi lanun

TOKYO 25 Dis.

Japan said set to drop F-22 buy plans

Published: Dec. 28, 2008 at 10:59 AM

TOKYO, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- The Japanese military is set to drop plans to replace its aging F-15 jet fighter fleet with the U.S.-made F-22 Raptor stealth fighter, sources say.

Instead, government officials will concentrate on other options such as the F-35 Lightning II, made by the United States, Britain and other countries; and the Eurofighter Typhoon, produced jointly by Britain, Italy, Spain and Germany, The Yomiuri Shimbun quoted unnamed sources as saying Sunday.

The sources said Japan is backing away from the F-22 Raptor amid signs that the incoming administration of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama is leaning toward curbing or even halting production of the aircraft. The U.S. Congress has placed an embargo on exports of the cutting-edge fighter for fear of revealing details of its advanced technology, the newspaper said.

A high-ranking unnamed official at the Japanese Defense Ministry said Saturday he "strongly" felt that the United States would halt F-22 production.
