Sevilla miss chance after loss at Gimnastic
MADRID, March 11 (Reuters) - Sevilla missed the chance to regain top spot in the Primera Liga by slipping to a shock 1-0 defeat at relegation-threatened Gimnastic Tarragona on Sunday.
Former Real Madrid striker Javier Portillo netted 14 minutes from time, getting between two defenders to send a header spinning into the net after a cross from Jose Maria Calvo.
Sevilla's first defeat in eight league games meant Barcelona stayed top, level on 50 points with the Andalucians, after their thrilling 3-3 draw at home to Real Madrid on Saturday.
Valencia, Spain's only remaining representative in the Champions League after the exits of Barcelona and Real in midweek, grabbed a 1-1 draw at Osasuna thanks to a stoppage-time goal from substitute Fernando Morientes.
Osasuna took the lead in controversial circumstances 10 minutes before the break when captain Patxi Punal converted a penalty after Raul Garcia had thrown himself to the ground when touched on the shoulder by defender Emiliano Morretti.
Morientes won his side a point when he steered a header past keeper Ricardo after a fine cross from Portugal fullback Miguel.
Valencia remained third on 47 points, three behind the leaders and two ahead of Real.
On a spying mission in the stands ahead of the Champions League quarter-final with Valencia was Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.
Real Zaragoza stayed fifth after a 1-1 draw at Real Betis, as Atletico Madrid drew level on 43 points after a 2-0 win at home to Deportivo Coruna.
Argentine winger Luciano Galletti got Atletico off to a flying start when he chested down a long pass, shrugged off a challenge from a defender and rifled a shot under Depor keeper Dudu Aouate after 38 seconds.
Atletico dominated for long periods but were unable to relax until substitute Mista volleyed in from close range six minutes before the end after Galletti had clipped a great cross from the right.
Bottom club Real Sociedad claimed their first victory in nine matches with a 3-1 win at home to Real Mallorca despite playing with 10 men for the last 17 minutes.
Brazilian forward Savio scored his first goal since joining Sociedad in January, Serbian striker Darko Kovacevic found the net for the first time in nearly 18 months and midfielder Xabi Prieto weighed in with a sublime third.
Sociedad have 17 points from 26 games, three behind Gimnastic and nine adrift of Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao, who drew 1-1 at Celta Vigo. |

Roberto Carlos for Fenerbahce?
Rumours in Turkey have once more linked Roberto Carlos with a potential move to Fenerbahce.
The Istanbul club have long been linked with the Real Madrid left-back and Carlos revealed to AS last week that Fenerbahce had made a bid for him in the summer but that he had turned down the offer once he knew that Fabio Capello was to become Madrid boss.
However, the Turkish league leaders could now finally be close to getting their man, although it is also reported that Real may look to sign Fenerbahce's Uruguayan international Diego Lugano in exchange for Carlos.
Lugano only signed for Fener in the summer but he is already regarded as one of South America's top defenders.
However, Fenerbahce are looking to hang onto all of their prized assets, and their bid to become a European power house could receive a further boost with the news that their midfield maestro Alex de Souza is close to sighing a new deal at the club.
"I've spoke to the Fenerbahce board not only about Alex's situation but about other projects too, we all want to make Fenerbahce as big as their competitors in Europe," said his agent Juan Figer.
"Alex's contract won't be a problem, he's very happy in Turkey and he's very comfortable." |

Has Saviola joined Madrid?... Well he has, according to Spanish sports daily Marca. The Barcelona forward's contract expires this summer and, after struggling to agree terms, it appears "El Conejo" has opted to sign for their fiercest rivals.

Valencia turn attention to Sneijder
After failing to persuade Osasuna to part with Raul Garcia, Valencia have turned their attention to Ajax midfielder Wesley Sneijder.
The Netherlands international, 23, is known as "the pitbull with intelligence" by Dutch journalists and these characteristics have driven Los Ches to make enquiries as to his availability.
Sneijder would be available for around 15 million euros, a price coach Quique Sanchez Flores would be willing to pay as he looks to add bite to a midfield that has been deprived by injuries in recent seasons.
The player's current deal expires in June 2009 and he has also recently been linked with Barcelona.
Raul Garcia had been linked with a move to Valencia but he is apparently keen to be reunited with former coach Javier Aguirre at Atletico Madrid, with Atleti willing to pay more for his services.
