Baltimore Ravens at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Baltimore Ravens at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Sunday, September 10 at , 2006
Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL.
Baltimore at Tampa Bay

New starting quarterback Steve McNair leads the Ravens into Raymond James Stadium to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their #1 ranked defense.

The Ravens will be looking for RB Jamal Lewis to return to his All-Pro form and take some pressure off of the Ravens passing attack.

The Bucs only allowed 277.8 yards per game last year, and I wouldn抰 bet against them putting up similar numbers in 2006.

Chris Simms is settling into his roll as starting quarterback, and should produce better numbers this year.

Sportsbook odds will have the Buccaneers as favorites playing at home for sure!

Answering the hard questions
Predictions and how key story lines will play out in '06

NFC East

Key question: Can Drew Bledsoe be a Super Bowl quarterback again 10 years later?

Answer: Yes, but there are several obvious qualifiers that go along with that premise. Dallas has a defense that could be dominating, but this is the year that all that young talent must mature into a unit that consistently puts the Cowboys in a position to win. Give Bledsoe some improved protection (49 sacks in 2005), a defense that leads the way and a big-play threat in Terrell Owens, and the Cowboys could reign in a conference devoid of great teams. After all, Bill Parcells took teams to the Super Bowl in both 1986 and '96. He's due.

1. Dallas (10-6): In a division dominated by quality coaching, the Cowboys get the nod based on defense. Dallas' two-year streak of missing the playoffs is the NFC East's longest.

2. Washington (9-7): The Redskins' terrible preseason has shaken my faith. Could it be that Washington has again assembled an all-star roster but an underachieving team?

3. Philadelphia (7-9): The Eagles could be a surprise team early, but that three-game December road trip will be a playoff-drive killer.

4. New York (7-9): Last year's overachievement will only deepen the disappointment in Gotham this season. So much will ride on Eli Manning's shoulders.

Key question: What will be our lasting memory if this, as expected, becomes No. 4's final NFL season?

Answer: Unfortunately for Packers fans, Brett Favre's jersey number will wind up being synonymous with Green Bay's last-place finish in the division. The Packers and Favre might be able to summon up a special moment or two along the way in 2006, but there will be no final victory lap for the NFL's most recognizable star. We're in for another season where his mistakes are plentiful and his magic fleeting. Favre's propensity for the comeback is legendary, but the deficit is insurmountable at this stage of the game.

1. Chicago (10-6): The Bears' defense is still plenty good, but this time around it won't conjure up comparisons to its counterparts on the 1985-86 Chicago teams. And the Bears must be wary of that three-game East Coast road trip in November.

2. Minnesota (9-7): With their first three games against 2005 playoff teams, it could be a rough start for Brad Childress and his Vikings. But in the second half, look for Minnesota to make a wild-card push.

3. Detroit (5-11): Rod Marinelli's tough-love approach is going to take a while to start paying off. Attitude adjustment is always hard to measure, but that's usually where progress begins.

4. Green Bay (5-11): If the Packers can start off with home wins against Chicago and New Orleans, who knows how much of last year's losing karma they might be able to rid themselves of? But that's a big if.

NFC South

Key question: Will Reggie Bush be the salvation of the Saints?

Answer: It's a little much to put the fate of an entire franchise -- and maybe the revival of its storm-battered community -- on the shoulders of a rookie running back. But if nothing else, Bush has restored relevance to Saints football and given us a reason to follow the reconstruction project underway in Louisiana. We'll be surprised if he's not the most electrifying rookie in recent NFL history.

1. Carolina (11-5): Every NFL team has holes. The Panthers just have fewer than anyone else in the NFC. With a deeper running-back depth chart, more help for receiver Steve Smith and an improved run defense, Carolina has Miami on its mind.

2. Atlanta (9-7): The Falcons have once again lowered our expectation level, which is usually when they kick it up a notch and make us take notice.

3. Tampa Bay (8-8): Did the Bucs let their surprising 2005 division title lull them into a status-quo offseason? In a tough neighborhood like the NFC South, staying the course can be akin to falling behind.

4. New Orleans (5-11): The Saints will be a better story than team in 2006, but after the endless road trip that was last year, New Orleans at least has a home to call its own again.

Key question: Will Edgerrin James provide Arizona with the edge it needs to end the league's longest active playoff-season drought?

Answer: The Cardinals' running game is better off with James, but then again, it couldn't be any worse than last year's 32nd-ranked rushing attack. For Arizona to make it to the postseason for the first time since 1998, the offensive line has to give James a running start at lifting the Cardinals' ground game into the league's middle third. The pressure is on Arizona's young defense, too. It's time for all that potential to turn into production.

1. Seattle (11-5): Say goodbye to the Super Bowl loser syndrome. Not only will the Seahawks return to the playoffs after losing the Big Game last February, they'll do so with ease in the NFL's weakest division.

2. Arizona (8-8): It's ironic that on both offense and defense, so much of the Big Red's problems are attributable to its lack of execution in the red zone. Improvement there will deliver respectability to the desert.

3. St. Louis (7-9): With at least six new starters on defense and Jim Haslett on hand to coordinate that side of the ball, the Rams should finally be a more balanced team. A commitment to the run is another novel approach in St. Louis.

4. San Francisco (5-11): When you've won a combined six games in the past two seasons, a five-win season passes for progress. The 49ers are still in the formative stages of their talent-acquisition phase.

Answering hard questions

AFC East

Key question: Will the Patriots make everyone pay for that divisional playoff loss at Denver?

Answer: New England gets motivated by disappointment. The last time the Patriots were coming off a season that didn't end the way they wished, they used 2002's non-playoff 9-7 finish as a springboard to go 34-4 and win consecutive Super Bowls in 2003 and 2004. That's not going to happen again, but the Patriots won't squeak into the playoffs with a measly 10-6 record this season.

1. New England (12-4): This time it's the receiving position that looks like it'll be the Patriots' trouble spot, but as in the past, New England's whole will somehow wind up being greater than the sum of its parts. Count on it.

2. Miami (10-6): Here's what it boils down to for me in the AFC East: Do I see Daunte Culpepper outplaying Tom Brady in the two Miami-New England matchups? No, apparently I don't.

3. Buffalo (7-9): My hunch is that running back Willis McGahee is going to like Steve Fairchild's offensive philosophy. Look for the Bills to ride McGahee's back considerably more than J.P. Losman's arm. Smart move.

4. New York Jets (4-12): The Jets at least are taking the correct approach. They're trying to build from their lines out, laying a foundation for better days ahead with draft choices like D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold.

Key question: Will Ben Roethlisberger rebound from his crash-test dummy role this offseason?

Answer: The Steelers' third-year quarterback still has plenty of improvement to make, and now he has some tailor-made motivation. He wants to prove to the critics that his ho-hum Super Bowl performance was a fluke, and that he's no worse for the wear after taking a header off his motorcycle in June. He's determined to take a larger leadership role this season, but the formula for success in Pittsburgh will continue to include defense and a running game.

1. Pittsburgh (11-5): The Steelers didn't lose any critical pieces of their Super Bowl team, but it's going to be hard to recapture the momentum they produced during that memorable eight-game, season-ending winning streak.

2. Cincinnati (10-6): The Bengals appear to have Carson Palmer put back together again in correct fashion, thus avoiding their doomsday scenario. Now if it can keep the focus on the field, Cincinnati looks poised for another playoff season.

3. Baltimore (8-8): The Ravens are an intriguing team that could cause real trouble in this division. If Ray Lewis truly is interested in playing again, Baltimore is a shrewd sleeper pick.

4. Cleveland (6-10): The Browns are further along in Year 2 of the Romeo Crennel era, but the results may not show up right away in the NFL's deepest division.

Key question: Will Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy finally get the last laugh?

Answer: Yes, they will. As I wrote during the spring, Manning and Dungy will use the disappointment of their abruptly ended 2005 playoff run to attain the goal they've both been chasing their entire careers: a Super Bowl championship. Indianapolis has had the talent for a while now. Last year should provide whatever was missing in terms of determination.

1. Indianapolis (11-5): The Colts in 2005 learned it's not about how you start (13 wins in a row), it's how you finish. Indy will finally figure out how to play its best ball when it matters most.

2. Jacksonville (8-8): Sorry, but Jacksonville's 12 wins last season did have something to do with its softer-than-usual schedule. The Jags' defense is legit, but the offense still must prove it can take a step up in weight class.

3. Tennessee (5-11): The Titans made a move to acquire a starting quarterback two weeks before their regular-season opener. That tells you the state of disarray that prevails in Nashville.

4. Houston (5-11): If you thought Bush vs. Gore was a big deal, try living in Houston, where the debate over Bush vs. Williams is going to last a whole lot longer than 37 days.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AFC West

Key question: Which AFC West playoff team will have a midseason quarterback change?

Answer: Like it or not, Jake Plummer, we're going with the Denver Broncos, who haven't seen anything not to like about rookie Jay Cutler this preseason. At some point this year, Plummer is going to struggle and start turning the ball over like he did in last January's AFC title game. And when he does, the Broncos are going to have Cutler, the 11th overall pick in this year's draft, ready to go.

1. Denver (11-5): The AFC West has had a different champion each of the past four years, but the Broncos will end that streak by repeating. Denver's acquisition of receiver Javon Walker is laden with impact potential.

2. San Diego (9-7): We're not saying Philip Rivers is going to make everyone in San Diego forget Drew Brees this year. But the feeling here is that Rivers isn't going to represent a huge drop-off at the position.

3. Kansas City (8-8): Larry Johnson may be a fantasy football player's delight, but that doesn't mean he can make the Chiefs' Super Bowl dreams come true all by himself. Stop us if you've heard this one before, but K.C.'s defensive improvement will again be key.

4. Oakland (5-11): The Raiders are counting on Aaron Brooks to get rid of his inconsistent streak and showcase his obvious talents as a mobile, playmaking quarterback. But that's a lot to expect at this stage of his career.
