Komposer terkenal, Manan Ngah berkongsi pendapat mengenai industri hiburan

MANAN Ngah - satu nama yang begitu popular sedikit masa lalu. Beliaulah yang banyak melahirkan ramai penyanyi ternama melalui lagu yang cukup membuai hati dan perasaan. Tahun 1986 boleh dikatakan mencipta banyak kenangan manis buatnya kerana pada tahun itulah lagunya, Sekadar di Pinggiran nyanyian Francisca Peter menjuarai Juara Lagu. Lebih manis apabila beliau memenangi dua tempat teratas sekali gus.

Tetapi sejak akhir-akhir ini Manan seolah-olah merajuk dengan industri hiburan tanah air. Benarkah komposer ternama itu merajuk? Hip mendapatkan Manan untuk mengetahui cerita selanjutnya. Manan juga diajak bicara mengenai beberapa isu dalam industri hiburan.

Hip: Siapa penyanyi yang saudara paling berpuas hati mengalunkan lagu ciptaan saudara?

Manan: Arwah Sudirman. Sebab dia suka didesak demi kesempurnaan dan tidak mudah berpuas hati terhadap hasil sesuatu rakaman. Seorang lagi saya pilih Francisca Peter, sebab dia tu bukan Melayu yang cukup berjaya meMalaysiakan melodi saya.

Hip: Kenapa industri muzik kita masih gagal cari penyanyi sehebat Sudirman? Mengapa Sudirman berbeza dengan penyanyi lain?

Manan: Terus terang, saya belum nampak satu pakej penyanyi/penghibur yang lengkap seumpama Sudirman baik dari segi pemikiran, perancangan mahupun bakat. Namun terus terang juga saya ingin katakan bahawa dalam masa yang sama arwah jika diukur di sudut suara, tidaklah mempunyai suara yang paling merdu dalam ramai artis yang pernah terbabit dengan kerjaya muzik saya. Tetapi chemistrynya menjadi!

Hip: Agak lama tidak mendengar cerita saudara dan ada kalanya sukar dihubungi. Apakah saudara masih aktif dalam bidang muzik?

Manan: Selepas tempoh saya berkhidmat di UPSI (sambil tinggal di Tanjung Malim) selama hampir lima tahun tamat pada akhir 2005, saya kembali menetap di Kuala Lumpur sehingga kini. Namun dalam masa yang sama saya kerap ulang alik antara KL-Terengganu kerana urusan perniagaan lain termasuklah menceburi bidang industri akuakultur ikan air tawar. Melalui syarikat Impak Teroka Sdn Bhd, saya kini menternak ikan dalam sangkar di Zon Eksklusif Akuakultur Tasik Kenyir sejak awal tahun 2007. Namun dalam banyak keadaan segala aktiviti penerbitan dan konsultansi muzik saya masih berpusat di Kuala Lumpur.

Hip: Saudara sudah tidak berminat untuk hasilkan lagu kepada artis popular?

Manan: Berada dalam arus perdana mungkin amat perlu bagi seseorang yang sedang mencipta nama dalam sesuatu bidang termasuklah dalam dunia muzik popular. Namun bagi yang dibuka pintu rezeki dan rahmat kepada selain itu mungkin merasakan berada yang di persada arus perdana itu adalah sebagai sebahagian dari proses penjenamaan hal berkaitan dirinya saja. Dunia muzik popular amat akrab dengan industri media cetak, elektronik dan penyiaran. Manakala sebagai sebuah industri, saya tidak menganggap muzik popular adalah satu satunya jenis atau aktiviti muzik yang boleh dibabitkan. Kerana dalam dunia lagu itu sendiri pun ada banyak jenis ciptaan lain yang tidak semestinya memerlukan hebahan mengenai orang di belakang tabirnya yang terlalu sebagaimana dengan lagu pop. Sebagai contoh, saban hari kita dengar banyak lagu lagu iklan, lagu motivasi, lagu tema korporat, patriotik, lagu kempen, kesukanan dan sebagainya. Pasti ada orang yang mengadakannya, bukan?

Hip: Saudara tidak rindukan zaman kegemilangan yang pernah dikecapi dulu?

Manan: Mana satu yang lebih gemilang? Si A yang masih dikenali, di tunggu-tunggu lagu barunya dan masih dipandang ideanya walaupun tidak seaktif mana dalam hal yang bersifat popular atau si B yang kerap dilihat dan kedengaran di sana sini, namun kehadirannya kurang berkesan, pendek jangka hayat hasil kerja atau kurang didengar pendapatnya dalam industri? Agak subjektif bagi saya.

Hip: Dalam tempoh lebih 10 tahun kebelakangan ini, saudara seperti melarikan diri dari dunia muzik kontemporari, seolah-olah anda seperti merajuk terhadap industri ini?

Manan: Seseorang yang merajuk apabila tidak berada di puncak pada saya adalah orang yang tidak merancang cita-cita dan kehidupan profesional dengan betul, mungkin penting diri sendiri atau sempit kepelbagaian kerjayanya. Manakala hidup secara low profile, tidaklah mengurangkan apa-apa pun bagi saya. Agak bebas bergerak ke sana sini tanpa banyak halangan sangat. Itu pun satu nikmat juga bagi seseorang yang sudah dikenali ramai. Namun dalam masa yang sama saya amat memerhati apa yang berlaku di sekeliling dunia dan industri yang berkaitan.

Hip: Sejauh mana saudara lihat industri muzik kita sekarang? Dan, bagaimana kedudukan muzik dan penggiat muzik itu sendiri termasuk penyanyi?

Manan: Di Malaysia, orang Melayu paling kaya nama dan bakatnya. Kaum Cina pula paling terdepan berniaga bahan muzik. Orang korporat terutamanya dalam industri media dan telekomunikasi makin hebat menggunakan elemen popular termasuk artis dan muzik untuk melariskan jualan produk dan perkhidmatan mereka. Namun jangka hayat seseorang artis dan lagu juga menjadi semakin singkat. Kesedaran mengenai hak dan harta intelektual pula masih rendah di kalangan seniman keseluruhannya. Manakala interaksi di antara kalangan pengamal media, deejay radio, orang politik, karyawan, pemikir dan kelompok akademik menjadi semakin diperlukan. Maksud saya ialah interaksi secara ilmiah dan bukannya berkaitan hal sensasi, remeh dan popular semata mata.

Hip: Anda sokong dengan kebanjiran program realiti TV cari bakat penyanyi?

Manan: Ia adalah tempias dari luar negara yang dominan dalam industri muzik dan penyiaran negara. Fenomena ini telah melahirkan ramai artis, apa saya sebut di sini sebagai broadcasting artiste. Ini amat berbeza dengan lahirnya satu lagi jenis artis yang selama ini dikenali sebagai recording artiste. Broadcasting artiste amat pendek jangka hayat kewujudannya, sependek ada atau tidaknya sesebuah program tahunan yang diadakan oleh sesebuah syarikat penyiaran terutama oleh syarikat swasta yang berorientasikan komersial.

Kebaikan yang ada melaluinya ialah bagi artis terutama yang paling di atas saja berpotensi menjana hasil pulangan dari aktivitinya dengan cukup besar dan lumayan. Program realiti pada satu tahap juga boleh menjadikan seseorang star in the making itu lebih berani berdepan dengan orang ramai dan kritikan secara terang-terangan. Namun dalam banyak keadaan dan lantaran sifat kebanyakan orang kita yang mengikutinya cukup pemurah terutama dalam aspek belanja, SMS. Maka syarikat yang berkaitan dan penganjur yang dapat untung besar dari segi komersial mahupun penjenamaannya.

Hip: Tetapi ia beri kebaikan dari segi kelahiran ramai bakat baru dan peluang artis baru itu dikenali ramai?

Manan: Apa yang penting ialah bagaimana artis daripada rancangan realiti TV bijak menggunakan peluang pada masa singkat yang ada itu untuk merancang masa depan dengan lebih terjamin dari segi kewangan, ketajaman minda, sahsiah diri sambil berperanan menyumbang ke arah pembangunan masyarakat keseluruhannya. Pada satu tahap, saya anggap konsep realiti ini merendahkan tahap profesionalisme bidang muzik. Maksudnya tersirat dalam persoalan, 揂pakah rasionalnya apabila usaha untuk melahirkan seorang profesional ditentukan mereka yang rata-rata bukan ahlinya (profesional)

Malaysia抯 youngest composer

KUALA LUMPUR: He's only six but he's already a composer with a book to his name.

Julian Chan, Malaysia's youngest composer, was officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records in a ceremony last night.

An only child, the young music prodigy started his journey into music at the age of three when he was given an electronic keyboard by his cousin.

His father Henry Chan, 49, said: 揓ulian has been playing tunes on his keyboard since he was young. He can repeat musical tunes he had heard on the television or radio and play it on his little machine.

Mengangkat kualiti lirik lagu

Allahyarham Tan Sri P. Ramlee pernah mengungkap, irama dan lagu tidak boleh dipisahkan. Jika dipisahkan pincanglah lagu.

Begitu juga lirik. Ia berkait rapat dengan lagu. Kedua-duanya ibarat buih dan air, mengalir dan bersatu.

Lagu yang baik tentulah memerlukan lirik daripada pencipta-pencipta yang baik. Namun tidak boleh dinafikan, lirik selalunya berkait rapat dengan pengalaman penulis liriknya sendiri.

Ia juga diilham berdasarkan pengamatan serta pengalaman selain penghayatan mengenai sesuatu perkara. Bagaimanapun kisah cinta, kekecewaan dan rintihan merupakan lirik yang kerap dihasilkan oleh pengkarya sejak sekian lama.

Masyarakat sudah lama dihidangkan dengan lagu dan lirik seperti itu sejak zaman Allahyarham P.Ramlee lagi. Malah karya-karya P. Ramlee juga banyak yang bertema cinta yang melankolik. Irama-irama begini akhirnya meresap ke dalam sanubari masyarakat yang menyebabkan lagu bertema cinta menjadi pilihan pendengar sehingga ke hari ini.

Pada tahun 80-an dan 90-an misalnya, kumpulan muzik rock turut menyanyikan lagu dan lirik bertemakan cinta walaupun dari segi imej fizikal, mereka lebih sesuai menyanyikan lagu yang dianggap lebih keras. Akibat dimomokkan dengan lirik-lirik sebegitu, karya tersebut seterusnya menjadi sebati di dalam diri sebilangan besar peminat muzik.

Penulis lirik yang berasal dari Singapura itu meninggal dunia pada pukul 1.37 petang akibat pendarahan otak.

All tuned up for change

Award-winning music producer and composer Ross Ariffin Jamil wants to put Malaysia on the map by breaking away from the norm. SANIA JOHNSON writes.

WHEN Ross Ariffin Jamil speaks about the state of music in Malaysia he can be blunt. "The music industry in Malaysia is void of any new ideas. The record companies are all thinking in the box. They are just too scared to take chances," he says.

Roslan Ariffin, 43, or just Ross, to his friends, can afford to be dismissive. After all, he is an award-winning producer and composed hit songs for artistes such as Siti Nurhaliza, Ning Baizura, Aishah and current Malaysian Idol judge Fauziah Latiff.

This writer had caught Ross at the end of an intense week. He hadn't had much sleep, juggling work with meetings, house renovations and paperwork for a new venture. The coffee at Starbucks didn't seem to help much either, and he dragged heavily on his cigarettes.

We allowed him his rant: "The Malaysian music scene is in the doldrums. It's dying now. I was told retail sales are down by as much as 70 per cent. All the producers are banking on the same artistes and same types of songs. Yes, you may make money - but for how long? You won't put Malaysia on the map."

Leading by example, Ross (left) said he made a stab at "putting Malaysia on the map" last year by submitting two songs to the annual USA Songwriting Competition - touted as the world's leading international songwriting competition.

One song, A Kiss Goodnight, with lyrics by his wife of 20 years, Helena Hon, was chosen for the finals from more than 31,000 entries received worldwide - a first for Malaysia.

In a congratulatory letter, USA Songwriting Competition president Lee Lyndes said there had been past finalists from Singapore and the Philippines, but from Malaysia there "has been a notable void until now."

"This represents a feather in the cap for local musicianship, and a testimony that Malaysian musical talent is alive and well."

Ironically, a demo of the song was rejected by a major Malaysian recording artiste, says Ross.

Ross, who is contracted as an exclusive producer with EMI, says as a composer, it is frustrating to have various demos still stuck with record companies.

"If you keep thinking inside the box, things are just going to get worse. Please take off the blinkers - unless you are a horse or a greyhound running in a race. If you try something new, sometimes good things may happen and sometimes bad. But, if you don't try - nothing happens."

Ross' pugnacious demeanour is different from his persona onstage. Later that night, as the music director of the newly-refurbished Hotel Maya Kuala Lumpur, he becomes the consummate professional.

From 6pm until 12.30am, Ross plays the piano solo. He also backs the violinist or flautist. In the evening, he does duets with singer Clair Rozells.

He does this six nights a week at the Lobby Lounge, with a few 15-minute breaks to catch a quick meal or a drink. So when he says, "I could be the hardest working musician in town," we don't doubt it.

Ross says it was his English mother, a teacher, who first spotted his talent. "At age eight, I could play songs or tunes I heard over the radio. It turned out later I had perfect pitch," he says.

Ross remembers spending his early school years in Malacca and Perak before going to the Alice Smith School in Bellamy Road in Kuala Lumpur.

At the 11, he was sent to Britain on a scholarship and studied piano under professors from the Royal College and the Royal Academy of Music of London, and violin under a Royal Philharmonic Orchestra violinist.

"I was recommended to go to the Yehudi Menuhin School (for music prodigies) but I decided against it. I had too much pop in me," he says.

On his return in 1980, Ross taught at the Hammond Academy of Music and also did private tutoring for piano and violin. "I also played with the band Memories in places like Beer Garden at Ampang Park," he says.

A decade later, Ross won the national-level Asian Broadcasting Union Golden Kite World Song Festival (ABU), which set his path to become a composer of pop songs.

Since then, he has racked up more than 200 songs, jingles, TV themes and corporate songs to his credit.

He has written and produced songs for almost all of Fauziah's albums through the years, the most famous being Dia which still airs on radio today.

Apart, from Fauziah, Aishah, Ning and Siti Nurhaliza, Ross has also written songs for Jamal Abdillah, Amy Mastura, Nash,Liza Hanim, Syafinaz, Camelia and Ruhil Amani, among others.

Awards-wise, he won an Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) Award as co-producer of Aishah's Wajah album. He also won the Best Pop Rock song award in TV3's Muzik-Muzik Finals for Kau Dan Aku, sung by Kool (a signature hit for Ning) and won the Best Film Soundtrack award at the Pesta Filem Malaysia for the movie Fantasi.

If you recall TV3 signature themes for its news segments, sports programmes and previous shows like Warna Warna Malaysia, Money Matters and CEO, they were all written by Ross.

He first composed songs at the age of nine. "I hid under the bed and composed little birthday ditties for my mum, dad and brothers. I was worried my parents would find out I wasn't doing my homework," he says. "I used to dream of being a famous composer."

The classically-trained Ross began composing commercial tunes in 1989 when lyricist Habsah Hassan encouraged him.

"They (the songs) just come to me. I composed Dia in five minutes. I remember it was during fasting in Taman Tun Dr Ismail. At that time I was with Rediffusion. I was so hungry and just about to break fast when suddenly I came up with the tune. Dah-de-dah-de-dah. So I went back to the office and wrote it down and gave the song to lyricist Amran Omar. The rest is kismet," he says.

With Siti Nurhaliza's hit Kurniaan Dalam Samaran, he remembers being up in Cameron Highlands. "I was on vacation in my friend's house, further up from Brinchang. One freezing cold day, I was playing on his acoustic piano and just composed and recorded the song in 20 minutes. I guess I was inspired by the coldness of Cameron Highlands."

S. Amin Shahab wrote the lyrics for Kurniaan Dalam Samaran and it appeared in Siti's Pancawarna album.

Ross says it was tougher to be a composer 10 years ago. "The market was different then. Nowadays, it is much more open to Western influences and genres like R&B and alternative."

He advises young composers to try not to be too imitative. "Think out of the box. Be original. Of course, you have to compromise between what you feel - what comes out spontaneously - and what can sell. Come up with something that is Malaysian, yet can hit an international market, and has a good, catchy melody," he says.

Five years ago, Ross, who has contributed a great deal to the local scene, followed his wife to Brunei. He kept himself busy teaching at international schools and performing for royal functions for Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and even found time to compose songs and produce an album for Khairy Missalnizam, an 18-year-old Brunei singer he discovered.

On his return last November, Ross was invited to perform at a private birthday dinner for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and was subsequently engaged to play for many other private functions on separate occasions for the prime minister's wife.

Ross says he is back in Malaysia to make a difference. "I am also working on my second piano album. It will have some of my hits and some original material. I think the market needs fresh stuff," he says.

He is also finalising a franchise agreement for a new music school and retail instruments outlet to be located in Puncak Jalil, Selangor.

The interview turns caustic again as the incorrigible Ross begins to skewer the current crop of local talent shows on TV. "I think the present reality shows should stop trying to clone foreign shows and come up with something original. Do something Malaysian-lah - but with international appeal."

He says the shows tend to promote mediocrity. "The winners shouldn't be decided on SMS voting alone. The public may not always be right. They may be voting just on looks or favouritism. At least a percentage of the decision-making should come from the judges," he says.

He chides this year's Malaysian Idol finalists for not meeting the high bar set by last year's winner Jaclyn Victor. "No offence to the judges, either, whom I know, but I think they should change the judges, or change the format because it is getting a bit stale."

As Ross steps off his soapbox, and returns to the grand piano at Hotel Maya, he again becomes the showman. We listen to him croon Barry Manilow's Even Now, with a poignant interpretation that would make any woman swoon.

Blessed with this extraordinary gift, it is not inconceivable that Ross Ariffin Jamil may one day produce a vital piece of music that will indeed put Malaysia on the map...

Belasungkawa Loloq (1957-2008): Hilangnya penulis kreatif

Loloq gemar guna perkataan baru dalam karya meninggal dunia selepas tak sedar diri sejak Ahad lalu

APABILA menghayati seni kata yang ditulis oleh Loloq, sering kali kita akan menemui perkataan baru yang kadang-kadang tidak pernah kita dengar. Itulah kelebihan dan keistimewaan Loloq atau nama sebenarnya Rosli Khamis ketika berkarya yang agak 'gila-gila' apabila menggunakan bahasa.

Pelbagai kamus tidak pernah lekang daripada dirinya ketika menulis seni kata. Bahkan, dia mempunyai himpunan buku daripada pelbagai genre untuk dijadikan sumber ilhamnya. Loloq pernah berkata, dia tidak terlalu berkira membelanjakan sejumlah wang semata-mata membeli buku yang berkaitan dengan keagamaan, biografi, sejarah, kebudayaan dan bahasa.



Mungkin tidak ramai yang tahu selain menggunakan nama Loloq, dia juga turut menggunakan nama pena Nurbisa pada seni kata lagu tulisannya.

Loloq dan M Nasir cukup sebati. Justeru dia menyertai Luncai Emas milik Nasir sejak tahun 1990 sebagai penulis lirik eksekutif. Malahan, M Nasir dikatakan orang yang bertanggungjawab membawa Loloq ke dunia seni. Justeru, tidak hairanlah banyak seni kata tulisannya dinyanyikan oleh M Nasir seperti Keroncong Nostradamus, Apokalips dan Insan & Manikam, manakala seni kata terakhirnya ialah Cinta Adam & Hawa nyanyian Misha Omar.

Dia juga ialah penulis lirik Ratnaku nyanyian Roy, Di Kala Asmara Lepaskan Layarnya (Aris Ariwatan), Mentera Semerah Padi (M Nasir), Layar Impian (Ella) dan Ana Pertama Timur (Search).

Loloq dikatakan sudah menulis lebih 1,000 seni kata. Antara seni kata tulisannya yang dianggap hebat ialah Ghazal Untuk Rabiah, Andalusia, Kias Fansuri dan Cinta Sakti. Pada tahun 1991, seni kata tulisannya Everlasting Glory nyanyian Hattan dilarang daripada disiarkan oleh radio RTM.

Dia pernah mengeluarkan kenyataan yang menimbulkan kontroversi apabila mendakwa kamus Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka (DBP) sebagai tidak laku. Isunya apabila Loloq menggunakan perkataan Syuga dalam album terbaru Ella iaitu Ella - USA. Perkataan Syuga tidak ditemui dalam kamus DBP. Sebaliknya, Loloq dituduh mengambil perkataan syuga daripada buku Madame D'Syuga yang memaparkan gambar telanjang Ratni Sari Dewi Sukarno, tetapi dia menafikannya.

Loloq berasal dari Singapura. Bapanya, Rosli Dayut berasal dari Masjid Tanah, Melaka adalah bekas polis Tanah Melayu. Ibunya, Maimunah adalah Cina mualaf.

Menurut Loloq yang pernah ditemui penulis pada tahun 1999, setiap buku yang dibelinya bukan untuk hiasan semata-mata. Hampir semua buku habis dibacanya.

"Kalau ada buku yang menarik, saya akan baca berulang kali. Kadang-kadang sampai tiga atau lima kali. Bahkan sebelum tidur, ada 20 buku di sebelah saya," jelasnya yang turut menyediakan sedikit peruntukan untuk membeli majalah bagi keperluan isterinya.

Dia mengaku, keasyikannya terhadap buku menyebabkan dia `pernah lupa' pada anak dan isterinya, Hairiah Yaakob. Ketika itu kami mula-mula kahwin. Rasanya dia tahu tabiat saya yang suka membaca. Saya pula ambil kesempatan sehingga dia merajuk. Sekarang cara saya membaca kenalah tukar. Asalkan isteri tidak merajuk, sudahlah," kata Loloq sambil ketawa.

Hasil perkahwinannya dengan Hairiah, Loloq dikurniakan tiga anak iaitu Krsty Nur, 10, Jaevn Nur (7) dan Yasha Nur (5). "Nama anak saya memang agak pelik bunyinya. Krsty bermaksud rahsia, manakala Jaevn sebenarnya bermaksud Jawa. Jawa ini pula kalau dihalusi berasal dari kaum Nabi Noh," katanya.

Loloq dikatakan memiliki ratusan buku yang mengandungi pelbagai tajuk. Ini termasuk tajuk yang berkaitan dengan ekonomi, pengurusan, politik, falsafah, keagamaan, perfileman, kesusasteraan, biografi dan pengetahuan am serta novel. Salah satu rak yang terletak di ruang tamunya, tersusun buku The Life Muhammad karya Hamka, Biografi Nelson Mandela, The Arabian Nights, Quantum Leanings, Saince of Politics, How To Argue And Win Every Time, History of Films, A History of the Jews dan banyak lagi.

Penulis lirik ini juga pernah mengaku mempunyai minat mendalam terhadap bahasa Melayu yang dianggapnya sebagai satu bahasa agung pada zaman kegemilangan raja Melayu. "Saya kagum dengan Hang Tuah yang boleh bertutur 10 bahasa. Begitu juga dengan nama Tun Sri Lanang. Setiap perkataan itu ada maknanya sendiri. Tun bermakna tuan, Sri bermakna bercahaya dan lanang adalah lelaki. Begitulah tingginya orang Melayu dulu apabila berkias.

"Sebab itu apabila saya guna perkataan yang lain dari kebiasaan, banyak yang berasa pelik. Sebenarnya, setiap perkataan yang saya pilih masih berbahasa Melayu. Misalnya, lagu Berikanku Nurbisa. Nurbisa itu dalam bahasa Melayu bermakna penawar segala penyakit," jelasnya lagi.

Loloq adalah satu yang diperoleh secara tidak sengaja."Apabila Jalil Ngah hendak terbitkan kulit album, dia tanya Loloq boleh. Saya kata

bolehlah...," katanya yang pernah menjadi penyanyi kumpulan Rastari pada awal tahun 90-an. "Satu kepuasan saya ialah apabila berjaya membuatkan kumpulan rock membuka kamus bahasa Melayu," katanya.

Selain hebat menulis seni kata lagu, Loloq juga dilihat hebat dalam bakat lakonannya. Antara filem yang pernah dibintanginya seperti Sara, Embun, Lang Buana, Zombie Kampung Pisang dan Man Laksa. Beliau juga pernah beraksi di pentas teater suatu masa dulu dalam persembahan teater Bukit Kepong arahan Othman Ghani dan drama sitcom Awie Record.

Semasa hayatnya beliau pernah dikurniakan beberapa anugerah seperti penulis lirik terunggul dan menerima royalti tertinggi daripada Badan Perlindungan Hak Cipta Karyawan Muzik Malaysia Berhad (MACP) ke-11 menerusi lagu Dewa Dewi nyanyian kumpulan Spider menjulang namanya sebagai Penulis Lirik Terunggul lima tahun berturut-turut.

Selain itu, Anugerah Lirik Nasyid pada majlis Anugerah Juara Nasyid Minggu Ini 2006 serta Anugerah Galakkan Penulis Lirik pada Anugerah Citra Wangsa Malaysia 2005. Beliau juga turut terbabit dalam menulis skrip filem Aduh Saliha yang judul asalnya ialah Misteri Mimpi Syakila arahan M Nasir. Bagaimanapun, filem itu tidak dapat disiapkan sehingga sekarang.

Loloq meninggal dunia Hospital Pakar Damansara, kira-kira jam 1.37 tengah hari kelmarin selepas dimasuk ke Unit Rawatan Rapi (ICU) sejak Ahad lalu kerana dipercayai berlaku pendarahan di kepalanya.

Not just background music



The subliminal music score is another noteworthy aspect of the historical drama 1957 Hati Malaya. Meet the person responsible for it.



1957 Hati Malaya is Sharon Paul’s first local movie project. She has previously worked with film composers in America.
THE current movie 1957 Hati Malaya should be appreciated not just for its historical values but its music that is subtle yet uplifting.

While the visual effects (shooting techniques, period costumes, and not to mention the odd pretty actress!) naturally draw the most attention, connoisseurs of soundtracks are certain to sit up and take note of the film’s impressive score.

Although the musical highlights appear to be Datuk Siti Nurhaliza’s stirring rendition of Hati, and Perlu Kamu, which is sung by Indonesian Kris Dayanti and Ajai, who also co-wrote the song, the orchestral score does warrant equal attention.

Just who is behind the music that’s so crucial to the first ever movie – helmed by the renowned director Shuhaimi Baba – that recounts the struggles that led to Malaysia’s independence 50 years ago?

The person is Sharon Paul and chances are, you may not have heard of her. My recent interview with the soundtrack composer is the first she’s ever granted.

Naturally, I start off with the insensitive comment that most orchestral soundtracks sound quite similar!

“I feel I do stand out,” states the graduate of the famed Berkelee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, who has also spent two years in Los Angeles working for film composers Daniel Licht (who did the score for Hellraiser IV) and Stephen Klong. “No one here does orchestral scoring quite like I do, because I write very complete parts for the orchestra.”

Despite her confidence, Paul did experience frustrations while working on the soundtrack of Hati Malaya, her first local feature-length project. “Don’t get me wrong. I would have liked to have more freedom to choose exactly what music I felt suited the movie and how my score blended with the footage and dialogue. But any artistic collaboration, especially one of this scale, means that everyone has to sacrifice a little of their original vision,” Paul explains.

So what was her original musical vision for the movie?

“My intention was to have a lot of traditional ethnic music, but Shuhaimi was very clear that she did not want the soundtrack to come across as too ethnic. She wanted a sweeping orchestral score, not something too folky and traditional. Still, we did take Western elements and offset them with Chinese and Malay sounds,” she reveals.

Paul also utilised a trick common in classical music by employing one melodic theme for (Umno founder) Datuk Onn Jaafar and another for (first Prime Minister) Tunku Abdul Rahman. “Actually towards the end of the creative process I was influenced by the Gladiator soundtrack.

“It’s a movie about struggle and sacrifice and I wanted the music to reflect that. In the end I would have to say that I’m happy on a purely musical level, but I would also have liked to mix the music more prominently.”

Indeed, one can see that there are a number of stages during which Paul would have had to compromise. For example, only 25% of the music one hears on the soundtrack is played by live musicians.

“The two violinists are Joanne Yeoh and Yap Yen and I also used a lot of samples from the online libraries East West and the Moto Symphonic.

Nothing captures an emotional scene better than music, such as this in 1957 Hati Malaya where the crowd at an Umno meeting donates money to fund Tunku’s pro-independence talks in London.
“String arrangements are my forte and Shuhaimi loves the sound of solo violins to emphasise the rousing of emotions. There are some critical scenes like the one where the crowd at an Umno meeting collects money for Tunku to go to London and at this point the emotion is best expressed by the music.”

Paul didn’t just write the orchestral score, however. She also composed the music for Siti’s Hati, with lyrics by Shuhaimi.

“I am very happy with Siti’s performance. No one else could have sung this song for this movie and given it a similar impact,” she enthuses.

I couldn’t help but notice that when the movie first switches out of the 1950s into current time, there is a piece of music that sounds as if it is inspired by Indonesian rock bands.

Paul laughs. “Yes, actually that’s a snippet from another song of mine and I did write it in the style of the Ratu, the Indonesian girl rockers. I really like the piece of music, but I haven’t finished it. I need to find a vocalist, in fact!”

For such a talented composer, Paul is rather low-key. Of mixed Indian, Chinese and Portuguese parentage, she is a former student of Ampang Road Girls’ School and Ocean Institute of Engineering, in Kuala Lumpur. The still-single 30-year-old describes her hobbies as “travelling, watching movies (sometimes just to listen to the effect the soundtrack has), going out with friends and occasionally scuba diving.”

Her eventual emergence as a soundtrack composer can be viewed as a fulfilment of her late father’s dream.

“My father was a tax inspector, but he had always wanted to learn music as a child and was too poor. When he got the chance to support my dream, he was only too glad to help,” says the KL-born lass, the elder of two siblings.

Her first inspiration was perhaps an unlikely source. “I was really inspired by (the Malaysian musician) Jenny Chin. She may not be known so well to the general public, but I remember watching her do work as a keyboardist and arranger for Sheila Majid and Zainal Abidin and thinking, ‘I want to be her.’ As I focused more on international movie soundtracks, I realised that my heroes are established soundtrack legends like John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. I also like the work of Tim Burton’s preferred composer Danny Elfman.”

It was by chance that she ended up working on Hati Malaya. “Shuhaimi saw me on the Bob Azrai TV show, Oh Mu La La, during which he interviewed upcoming composers. She then called me up and after hearing that strings were my strength, asked for a sample of my work. When she heard it, she got me on board for the movie.”

Admitting that it isn’t always easy both artistically and financially to work as a soundtrack composer, Paul has no intentions of curtailing her ambitions, and is intent on making it not just inside Malaysia, but internationally.

“We are hoping to have the soundtrack released in the next few weeks. Sometimes I get scared that people might not be ready to accept it. But I believe that it’s only a matter of time before there is an audience for this sort of music. I intend this to be just the beginning of my career.”

Komposer ‘Ku Pendam Sebuah Duka’ Meninggal Dunia

PETALING JAYA: Komposer lagu Ku Pendam Sebuah Duka, Ismail Fariz Ali, 46, meninggal dunia akibat kanser pukul 4.30 pagi tadi di Hospital Gleneagles, Ampang.

Jenazah arwah Ismail akan dikebumikan di Tanah Perkuburan Bukit Kiara selepas Zuhur.

"Kami hanya pernah berjumpa dua atau tiga kali. Itu pun ketika proses rakaman lagu tersebut sekitar tahun 1986," katanya.

Sementara itu, komposer terkenal tanah air Johan Nawawi yang merupakan teman rapat Allahyarham berkata, dia terkejut dengan kehilangan sahabatnya itu.

"Dia seorang yang baik, warak, bertanggungjawab, berbakat dan prihatin," kata Johan.

Allahyarham meninggalkan seorang isteri dan anak perempuan.

KOTA KINABALU 2 Jun - Penyanyi tempatan Sabah, Kimin Mudin yang

popular dengan lagu "Sayang Kinabalu", sebuah lagu Dusun yang dijadikan popular khusus bagi mempromosi pelancongan di Sabah, meninggal dunia akibat masalah jantung di Hospital Likas dekat sini awal hari ini.

Kimin, 46, yang juga abang kepada pencipta dan penulis lirik lagu popular

Asmin Mudin, menghembuskan nafas terakhirnya pada kira-kira pukul 1.35 pagi selepas dimasukkan ke hospital itu malam tadi.

Menurut Asmin, 40, Kimin yang berasal dari Kampung Kelatuan, Papar mengadu sesak nafas selepas mandi di rumahnya di Kampung Rampaian Menggatal pada kira-kira pukul 10 malam.

"Isterinya kemudian menghantarnya ke Hospital Likas. Semasa dirawat di sana, abang saya kemudian pengsan dan disahkan meninggal pada pukul 1.35 pagi," katanya ketika ditemui di Tanah Perkuburan Orang Islam Jalan Kepayan, dekat sini hari ini.

Turut berada di tanah perkuburan itu ialah para artis tempatan Sabah

termasuk Abu Bakar Ella.

Nama Kimin mula dikenali ramai selepas membawa lagu Sayang Kinabalu ciptaan Asmin pada tahun 2000, dan pada tahun 2004, pengurusan Skyline mengambil alih tugas untuk mempromosi album yang memuatkan lagu Sayang Kinabalu.

Asmin, yang turut mencipta lagu Kau Ilham Ku, Anggapanmu, Gemilang yang masing-masing pernah dipopularkan oleh Man Bai, Ziana Zain dan Jacklyn Victor berkata, setakat ini, jualan album Sayang Kinabalu sudah mencecah sekitar 50,000 unit. Kimin dikurniakan tujuh cahaya mata termasuk dua lelaki. - Bernama
