Ni ada lagi satu test match, the last one in the Ashes. Kalau England kalah jugak memang rekod laa... the last time England was beaten 5-0 by Australia was in 1921!

TEST CRICKET - Jaffer lifts India
by AFP

CAPE TOWN: Wasim Jaffer (right) made a measured century as India forged a strong position on the first day of the decisive Third and final Test against South Africa at Newlands yesterday.

Jaffer made 116 as India reached 254-3 at the close.

India benefited from a decision to move the out-of-form Virender Sehwag down the batting order. Dinesh Karthik, his replacement, made 63 and helped Jaffer put on 153 for the first wicket.

With the series locked at 1-1, South Africa抯 bowlers were made to work hard on an easy-paced pitch as India took a big step towards ensuring that they go home with at least a share of the honours.

The tall Jaffer, 28, made a horror start to the tour of South Africa, with a top score of 10 from his first five innings. But the tour selectors kept faith with him and he showed signs of form when he made 26 and 28 in the Second Test in Durban.

He played a chanceless innings yesterday, reaching his third century in his 17th Test off 197 balls. He eventually fell to the second new ball when Jacques Kallis held a flying chance at second slip off Dale Steyn.

It was Kallis

Cricket: National Juniors in Super 8s
06 Jan 2007

THE National Under-19 cricket squad preparing for next year抯 Under-19 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur will play as a team for the first time in the MCA Super 8s Under-25 Championship which starts today.

However, only 10 of the 30 players identified from selection trials will get a taste of the action in the seven-team two-day tournament at the Kinrara Oval and the Selangor Turf Club ground.

The National Under-19 team are set for a busy year which will include matches against the England, India and Sri Lanka Under-19 teams in two tri-series later this month and February.

They will also play in the new franchised national cricket league before competing in the ACC Under-19 Trophy in Kuala Lumpur in August.

Thushara Kodikara, a member of National Under-19 coaching panel, said several trainees were unavailable due to the start of the school term or college examinations.

"Most are schoolboys who have just started the new school term while those in college are sitting for their exams," said Kodikara.

"There are also several players who have just completed their SPM examination but will be representing their respective States in the Super 8s.

"But it will be a good opportunity for the boys to play against the seniors."

The National Under-19 team have Negri Sembilan, Selangor and Johor in Group A while Perak, Armed Forces and Kuala Lumpur make up Group B.

Several national senior players will also feature in the tournament with Anwar Arudin, Mohd Ariffin Ramly, Mohd Shukri Abdul Rahim and Rosman Zakaria turning out for the Armed Forces, while national skipper Rohan Vishnu Suppiah leads MCA Premier League champions Kuala Lumpur.

Each side will bat 15 overs and bowlers will be restricted to bowling three overs each while boundaries will count as eight runs.

Cricket: England blasted again
24 Jan 2007

ADELAIDE: Pace bowler James Franklin went from villain to hero as New Zealand kept their triangular series hopes alive with a 90-run win over England at the Adelaide Oval yesterday.

New Zealand did not look to have enough on the board when dismissed for 210 after winning the toss and electing to bat, but they bowled and fielded exceptionally well to restrict England to just 120 in reply.

Importantly, the Kiwis claimed a bonus point for their first win of the series and moved ahead of England on the tri-series table.

Inspired by an incisive opening spell by Franklin (3-17), and some typically clever bowling by cagey spinner Daniel Vettori (4-24) later in the England innings, the Kiwis notched their first win of the series at a crucial time.

Franklin, arguably, cost his side an upset win over Australia on Sunday when he dropped a simple catch, but against England he put his side on the path to victory with a three-wicket opening spell.

After Kiwi all-rounder Jacob Oram celebrated his return from a hamstring injury by making a bold 86 to enable his side to recover from 5-67 and make a decent total, Franklin struck three key blows to remove England抯 top three.

Bowling a steady line outside off stump and angling it dangerously across the right handers, the left-armer overcame the disappointment of having a caught behind appeal incorrectly turned down to remove openers Mal Loye (eight) and Andrew Strauss (19), along with Ian Bell (two).

England temporarily recovered through Ed Joyce and Paul Collingwood, before Vettori turned the screws by claiming the vital wickets of Collingwood (10) and England skipper Andrew Flintoff in quick succession with his cunning variation.

Flintoff had seen his side home in a tense run chase against the Black Caps a week earlier and had bowled superbly during the New Zealand innings with 4-21.

But he succumbed to a rush of blood, charging down the wicket at Vettori and getting a thin edge through to wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum, who claimed the catch at the second attempt.

England were 5-92 and, with Flintoff gone for nine, in deep trouble.

Oram capped a Man-of-The-Match performance by removing Paul Nixon cheaply, before Mark Gillespie leapt high to drag in an outstanding catch to remove Joyce (47) from the bowling of Vettori and seal England抯 fate as they were 7-107.

Unlike Sunday抯 match against Australia, the Kiwis did not miss a chance in the field, while England only had two batsmen score more than 10 in a poor effort.

Earlier, Oram抯 86 was the backbone of the New Zealand total as he celebrated his recall with his highest score in one-day internationals.

The big man faced just 89 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes.
