Australia crush Bangladesh

CAPE TOWN: Australian fast bowler Brett Lee took the first hat-trick in 20-overs internationals as Bangladesh struggled in their World Twenty20 Super Eights match at Newlands yesterday.

Bangladesh were restricted to 123 for nine after being sent in.

The Bangladeshis were struggling at 103 for three after 16 overs when Lee came on for his second spell. Aftab Ahmed hit a boundary followed by a single but Lee then had Shakib al Hasan caught behind for 16.

New batsman Mashrafe Mortaza predictably stepped away to try to slog the next ball but was deceived and bowled by a slow yorker. Alok Kapali was trapped on his crease and was out leg before wicket first ball.

Lee finished with three for 27.

In contrast to their tearaway start in their final group match against South Africa on Saturday, the Bangladeshis were unable to get on top against tight bowling and athletic fielding.

Opening batsman Tamim Iqbal made 32 and Aftab Ahmed 31 but they needed 40 and 34 balls respectively in a form of the game where batsmen are expected to score at better than a run a ball.

There were only nine fours and one six in the innings

Smith and Morkel win for South Africa, S. Lanka beat N. Zealand

CAPE TOWN: Steady batting by Graeme Smith and Albie Morkel earned South Africa a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in their Twenty20 World Cup match in Cape Town on Saturday.

Bangladesh were dismissed for 144 and South Africa replied with 146 for three to win with seven balls remaining of the Group A match.

I did it: New Zealand's Lou Vincent celebrates after running out India's batsman Ajit Agarkar (not pictured) for 1 run during their Twenty20 World Cup Super Eight match yesterday.

Smith and Morkel each scored 41 and put on 43 runs for the second wicket after Smith and JP Duminy, who made 36, had shared an opening stand of 65.

Two moments of fielding brilliance by Duminy had helped South Africa limit the Bangladesh batsmen.

Duminy's dive and under-arm throw from extra cover ran out Shakib Al Hasan for 19 in the eighth over.

Three overs later Duminy backpedalled and dived to take a spectacular catch after Masharafe Mortaza, who scored 12, skied a drive off fast bowler Vernon Philander.

Bangladesh, who were put in to bat, scored freely early in their innings but struggled to keep the momentum going once the wickets began to mount.

Aftab Ahmed hit five fours in his 36, Bangladesh's top score, while South Africa paceman Shaun Pollock took three for 40.

In Johannesburg, Sanath Jayasuriya made his second half-century in two days as Sri Lanka eased to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over New Zealand on Saturday.

Jayasuriya, who scored 88 off 44 balls against Kenya on Friday at the same venue, needed the same number of deliveries on Saturday to score 61 as Sri Lanka cruised to 168 for three in 18.5 overs.

The left-hander's top-class innings included six fours and three sixes and he set Sri Lanka on the road to victory with a first-wicket stand of 82 off 46 balls with Upul Tharanga (37).

England go down

CAPE TOWN: Albie Morkel top scored and took two important wickets in South Africa's 19-run win over England in a Twenty20 World Cup Super Eights match on Sunday.

Morkel scored 43 in South Africa's total of 154 for eight and claimed two for 12 in England's reply of 135 for seven.

Morkel faced 20 balls and hit three fours and four sixes, three of them consecutively off leg-spinner Chris Schofield.

Number seven batsman Morkel came to the crease in the 15th over after South Africa had slumped to 91 for five, and six balls later they were 94 for six.

Pace bowler Stuart Broad led England's disciplined bowling performance with a haul of three for 37, but they did themselves no favours by dropping five catches.

South Africa reduced England to 27 for three before opener Matt Prior and Owais Shah stood firm with a partnership of 55.

Medium pacer Morkel had Prior caught at deep cover for 32 before bowling Shah for 36 in his next over to halt England's momentum.

England's last real hope of winning was snuffed out in the 19th over when fast bowler Johan van der Wath shattered Andrew Flintoff's stumps for 17.

In Cape Town, Brett Lee claimed the first international Twenty20 hat-trick to help restrict Bangladesh to 123-8 before Matthew Hayden powered Australia to a nine-wicket victory in their Group F match on Sunday.

Lee tore the middle order apart in the 17th over once Bangladesh had been sent in to bat. He had Shakib al Hasan caught by Adam Gilchrist for 16, bowled Mashrafe Mortaza and then trapped Alok Kapali lbw for first ball noughts.

Hayden, who finished unbeaten on 73 from just 48 balls with nine fours and three sixes, added 104 with Adam Gilchrist to confirm a thunderous win at Newlands with 37 balls to spare.

Pakistan beat Australia by six wickets

JOHANNESBURG: Shoaib Malik and Misbah ul-Haq shared a record partnership to lead Pakistan to a memorable victory over Australia in their Twenty20 World Cup Super Eights match yesterday.

Captain Shoaib, who shared a fourth-wicket stand of 101 with Younis Khan in Pakistan's win over Sri Lanka on Monday, bettered that record in Twenty20 internationals with Misbah in an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 119.

You抮e out: Pakistan抯 Shahid Afridi (right) celebrates the dismissal of Australia抯 batsman Andrew Symonds during their Twenty20 World Cup match.

That carried Pakistan to 165 for four and victory by six wickets with five balls to spare.

Australia, who had trounced Bangladesh by nine wickets in their opening Super Eights clash on Sunday, had looked on course for victory when seamer Stuart Clark claimed three quick wickets to help reduce Pakistan to 46 for four.

However, the rest of the Australian bowling was ineffective as Shoaib and Misbah turned the match round to secure a rousing win.

Shoaib came in at the fall of the third wicket but it was 23-year-old Misbah who reached his half-century first, off 35 balls. Misbah finished on 66 not out with seven fours and a six.

Shoaib was content to play second fiddle to his big-hitting partner and ended with 52 not out off 38 deliveries.

Clark was the best of the Australian bowlers, taking three for 27 in his four overs, but he lacked support as Australia failed to capture wickets when the run-chase was on.

DURBAN: England lost three wickets in the space of five balls as New Zealand won a tense match by five runs at Kingsmead yesterday.
The defeat probably ensured that New Zealand would reach the semi-finals while England faced almost certain elimination.

England seemed on course for a win when they restricted New Zealand to 164 for nine.

New opening pair Darren Maddy and Vikram Solanki put on 64 for the first wicket. Maddy seemed well on the way to a man of the match performance when he made 50 off 31 balls after pulling off a direct-hit run-out and taking two wickets but he became the first of three run-out victims as the England challenge subsided.

Needing 20 to win off the last two overs, England's hopes crashed when Owais Shah was run out after he and Luke Wright had put on 42 for the sixth wicket.

South Africa stay on track

DURBAN: Justin Kemp blasted 89 not out off 56 balls after Morne Morkel claimed 4-17 as South Africa thrashed New Zealand by six wickets in the Twenty20 world championships here yesterday.

Graeme Smith's home team restricted the Kiwis to 153-8 after giving them first strike at the Kingsmead and then knocked off the modest target with five balls to spare.

It was New Zealand's only defeat in three matches of the Super Eights and left them level with South Africa on two wins each.

Both teams will advance to the semi-finals from Group E if India lose to England here later yesterday.

If India win and also beat South Africa in their last match today, a three-way tie will be decided on net run-rates.

England, who lost their first two matches, have been knocked out of the semi-final race.

Pakistan are the first team to make the last four in the 12-nation tournament after beating Sri Lanka and Australia in Group F.

The second spot from the group will go to the winner of today's crucial tie between Australia and Sri Lanka in Cape Town.

Kemp hammered six boundaries and as many sixes in his match-winning knock, ending the match by lofting Mark Gillespie over the straight field for six.

Kemp added 65 runs for the fourth wicket with Mark Boucher (23) and an undefeated 48 for the fifth with Shaun Pollock, who remained unbeaten on 16.

The South African blitz came after two wickets had fallen for 17 runs and a third batsman, Herschelle Gibbs, was dismissed in the eighth over with the total at 45.

The emphatic win was set up by 22-year-old fast bowler Morne Morkel who ensured that New Zealand lost wickets at regular intervals.

Morkel narrowly missed becoming the first Twenty20 bowler to claim five wickets when his penultimate ball which clean bowled Gillespie was declared a no-ball by umpire Billy Doctrove.

Craig McMillan top scored for New Zealand with 48 not out in an innings studded with four sixes.

Pakistan, Australia in semi-finals

CAPE TOWN: Shahid Afridi blasted 39 from 15 balls to smooth Pakistan's way to a comfortable four-wicket victory against Bangladesh in their final Twenty20 World Cup Group F match at Newlands yesterday.

Australia's earlier 10-wicket victory over Sri Lanka ensured Pakistan had already qualified for today's semi-finals while Bangladesh were eliminated following two opening Super Eight defeats.

Debutant Junaid Siddique smashed a quickfire 71 from 49 balls in a Man-of-the-Match performance to lift Bangladesh to a respectable total of 140 but Afridi's composed innings allowed Pakistan to cruise to victory with an over to spare.

Siddique struck six fours and three sixes but none of his team mates were able to reach 20 against Pakistan's bowlers, with off spinners Mohammed Hafeez and captain Shoaib Malik leading the way with figures of 2-27 and 2-15.

Openers Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist continued their prolific form for Australia. Needing a modest 102 for victory against the Sri Lankans, Hayden lashed 58 from 38 deliveries with seven fours and two sixes while Gilchrist remained unbeaten on 31 from just 25 balls.

DURBAN: Yuvraj Singh smashed English fast bowler Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over as India won by 18 runs to stay alive and hand England an early exit on Wednesday.
India, who would have crashed out of the tournament had they lost, piled up 218-4 after electing to take first strike and then restricted England to 200-6 on a rousing night at the jampacked Kingsmead.

Left-hander Yuvraj's feat in the 19th over gave him the fastest 50 in the tournament off just 12 balls, eight deliveries less than what Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful achieved against the West Indies.

Broad's first two balls were swung over fine leg, the third over cover, the fourth cut over point, the fifth pulled to mid-wicket and the last into the stands at long-on.

It was only the fourth instance in top cricket that six sixes were hit in an over after Garfield Sobers and Ravi Shastri did it in first-class cricket and Herschelle Gibbs in the World Cup earlier this year.

India in the semi-finals Hosts South Africa crash out

DURBAN (South Africa): India snatched a dramatic 37-run victory over hosts South Africa on Thursday to storm into the semi-finals of the Twenty20 world championship.

India, restricted to 153-5 in a game they had to win to stay afloat, hit back to stop South Africa to 116-9 and knock Graeme Smith's home team out of the tournament.

Into the last four: Indian players celebrate their 37-run victory over South Africa in the Twenty20 match in Durban on Thursday.

India, South Africa and New Zealand finished Group E of the Super Eights on four points each, but India took the Kiwis along into the semi-finals due to superior net run-rates.

In today's semi-finals, India clash with Australia at the Kingsmead here while New Zealand meet Group F leaders Pakistan at the Newlands in Cape Town.

In an unexpected turn of events, South Africa not only lost a match they appeared to be winning but failed to make 126 that would have helped them pip New Zealand on run-rate.

揑t is really disappointing not to make the semis of our own tournament,

Pakistan stroll into the final

CAPE TOWN: A half-century by Imran Nazir and three wickets from paceman Umar Gul helped Pakistan beat New Zealand by six wickets with seven balls to spare yesterday to reach the final of the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup.

Gul was not introduced until the 12th over at Newlands but quickly removed Scott Styris (18), Peter Fulton (10) and Jacob Oram (1) to restrict New Zealand to a modest 143 for eight after electing to bat first.

Opener Nazir, batting with a runner after injuring his leg, then lashed three fours and five sixes in his 41-ball innings of 59 to lead Pakistan to victory.

Nazir put on 60 for the first wicket with Mohammad Hafeez (32).

Pakistan were never behind the asking rate and remained in control throughout the run chase. Captain Shoaib Malik (26 not out) finished the contest in style by hammering off-spinner Jeetan Patel over mid-wicket for six.

Earlier, Ross Taylor top-scored for New Zealand with an unbeaten 37 from 23 balls. He smashed paceman Mohammed Asif for 17 in the final over.

Openers Brendan McCullum (26) and Lou Vincent (28) shared a 50-run opening stand before wickets started to fall on a regular basis.

Pakistan will meet Australia or India in tomorrow's final.
