India set up dream final

DURBAN: India stunned favourites Australia by 15 runs here on Saturday to set up a mouth-watering final against Pakistan in the Twenty20 world championships.

Yuvraj Singh smashed 70 off 30 balls as India, electing to take first strike at the jam-packed Kingsmead, made a challenging 188-5 and then restricted Australia to 173-7 in a rousing semi-final.

Australia, needing 27 off the last 12 balls, were kept down to five runs in the 19th over bowled by left-arm seamer Rudra Pratap Singh and six runs in Joginder Sharma's last over.

Joginder, who was hammered for 31 runs in his first two overs, was gambled for the final over by Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and came good with two wickets at the end.

Opener Matthew Hayden hit 62 off 47 balls and Andrew Symonds scored a 26-ball 43 during a rollicking third wicket stand of 66 that came off just 37 deliveries.

Australia, coasting at 134-2 by the 15th over, lost five wickets for 39 runs to hand India a famous win before some 19,000 delirious South African fans waving the Indian flag.

Seamer Shanthakumaran Sreesanth shone with the ball taking 2-12 off his four overs. Irfan Pathan and Joginder also claimed two wickets each.

The final at the Wanderers in Johannesburg today will be the first major title clash between India and Pakistan since the limited-overs world championship in Melbourne in 1985.

India, Australia one-dayer abandoned due to rain

BANGALORE: Rain forced the abandonment of the opening one-dayer between India and Australia after Michael Clarke hit a career-best 130 for the visitors on Saturday.

India, replying to Australia's 307 for seven, were nine for one in 2.4 overs when showers halted the day-night game. Although the rain stopped, a wet outfield meant the match was called off after a three-hour wait.

Left-arm seamer Mitchell Johnson trapped Sachin Tendulkar leg before for a duck in the second over before the weather intervened.

揑t was good to score a hundred but disappointing it was a bit of a waste,

Maharoof powers Sri Lanka to victory

DAMBULLA (Sri Lanka): All-rounder Farveez Maharoof grabbed four wickets to propel Sri Lanka to an emphatic 119-run run victory over England in the first one-day international on Monday.

Sri Lanka's victory platform was set-up earlier in the afternoon as skipper Mahela Jayawardene top scored with 66 to guide his team to a competitive 269-7 on a sluggish pitch.

Jayawardene was well-supported by this fellow top order batsmen with Sanath Jayasuriua (41), Upul Tharanga (40), Kumar Sangakkara (38) and Chamara Silva (33) all chipping in.

Spinners give Pakistan a glimmer of hope

KARACHI: Pakistan battled to save the first Test against South Africa by reducing the visitors to 76 for three after conceding a 159-run first-innings lead on the third day yesterday.

Jacques Kallis (18 not out) and Ashwell Prince (11no) steadied the ship at the close after South Africa had lost three wickets in the space of two runs to spinners Abdul Rehman and Danish Kaneria to slump to 43 for three.

The pair helped South Africa stutter to a 235-run overall lead.

Boucher: Set world record with most dismissals for a Test wicketkeeper

Rehman dismissed skipper Graeme Smith (25) and Hashim Amla (0) and leg-spinner Kaneria had Herschelle Gibbs (18) caught shortly after the batsman had passed 6,000 runs in Tests in his 85th match.

Smith was caught behind trying to cut left-armer Rehman, who also won a tight stumping decision against Amla. Gibbs was caught off an inside edge by silly mid-off Faisal Iqbal in the absorbing final session.

Earlier South African spinner Paul Harris took five wickets as Pakistan were bowled out for 291 runs at tea, conceding a big lead in reply to South Africa's first-innings score of 450.

Three of Harris's victims in the second session were stumped by Mark Boucher, who set a new record for most dismissals for a Test wicketkeeper.

Playing in only his fifth Test, his fourth against Pakistan, Harris took 5 for 73

S. Africa on top after Kallis hits second ton

KARACHI: Pakistan's Younis Khan and Faisal Iqbal shared a big stand to hold up South Africa's push for victory in the first Test after Jacques Kallis hit his second century of the match on the fourth day yesterday.

Younis (93 not out) and Faisal (44) put on 114 for the third wicket after Pakistan lost their openers quickly but left-arm spinner Paul Harris struck before the close to leave Pakistan on 146 for three, still needing 278 more runs to win.

The visitors declared before tea to set the hosts a target of 424, with Kallis becoming only the fourth South African to compile two centuries in the same Test.

Harris had Faisal caught by Kallis at slip with a sharp turning delivery.

Younis was in a punishing mood, racing to 93 from 99 balls with 14 fours and a six.

The 31-year-old Kallis, who scored 155 in the first innings, struck an unbeaten 100 in the second as South Africa declared on 264 for seven.

DAMBULLA (Sri Lanka): Ryan Sidebottom and Stuart Broad shared four big wickets as England ended a 25-year wait with a 65-run win over Sri Lanka in the second one-day international here yesterday.
The pace duo built on man-of-the-match Owais Shah's superb 82 as England dismissed the World Cup runners-up for 169 after posting 234-8 to win their first one-day international in Sri Lanka since 1982.

The win also helped England level the five-match series 1-1, having lost the first one-dayer by 119 runs at this venue on Monday.

Tense eight-run victory for India over Australia

CHANDIGARH (India): India pulled off a tense eight-run win over Australia in the fourth one-day international yesterday to narrow the visitors' lead to 2-1 in the seven-match series.

Sachin Tendulkar top-scored with 79 to guide India to a solid 291 for four and Australia in reply were restricted to 283 for seven after mounting a fine chase on a slow pitch.

Left-arm seamer Rudra Pratap Singh checked Australia by removing the dangerous Andrew Symonds (75) and producing a run out in the 46th over.

Opener Matthew Hayden had led the chase by top-scoring with 92 before the tide turned in the home team's favour in the final overs.

It was India's first one-day win over Australia since January 2006, a streak stretching to 11 games.

n LAHORE: Jacques Kallis continued to shine with the bat as he notched a battling half century to help South Africa reach 160 for four at tea on the first day of the second Test against Pakistan at the Gaddafi stadium yesterday.

Kallis (59), who scored his 45th Test fifty, was dismissed in the final over before the interval after adding 60 runs with Ashwell Prince (23 not out) for the fourth wicket.

Leg-spinner, Danish Kaneria struck two vital blows for his team in the second session, first getting rid of Graeme Smith (46) and than Kallis after the visitors had opted to bat first.

Smith was bowled by a fine delivery that spun sharply to drift between his bat and pad and Kallis was trapped leg before wicket just when he had started to go on the offensive.

Kallis faced 115 balls and hit eight fours and one six and had earlier put on 53 with Smith, who battled for 90 balls and 153 minutes to hit four boundaries.

Kallis came in with his team struggling on 47-2 and started from where he had left off in the first Test in Karachi, where he made 155 and 100 not out to help the tourists win the opener of the two-Test series by 160 runs.

Pakistan hand bowler Shoaib 13-match ban

LAHORE: Pakistan's Shoaib Akhtar has been banned for 13 international matches and fined US$56,000 by the disciplinary committee of the country's cricket board for four breaches of the code of conduct.

The committee also placed the fast bowler on a two-year probation period during which if he is found guilty of violating the code of conduct he could be banned for life.

However, chairman of the committee Shafqat Naghmi said on Thursday Shoaib's suspension would be counted from the Twenty20 World Cup held in South Africa last month, so having missed seven matches he would be banned for five more games.

Shoaib, who was present at the news conference, said he would not be filing an appeal and that he had learnt his lesson.

Shoaib was sent back from the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa by the team management after he hit Mohammad Asif with a bat during a brawl before the tournament started.

The 32-year-old, who has played 43 Tests and 133 one-dayers, has had a controversial career for Pakistan since making his debut in 1997 and said he was keen to make the team for the Indian tour.
