Murali fires India to victory

MUMBAI: Murali Kartik's all-round exploits helped India beat Australia by two wickets in the seventh and final one-day international yesterday.

The left-arm spinner spun a web with his first five-wicket haul in one-dayers to restrict the world champions to 193 in 41.3 overs after the visitors, who had already won the series, opted to bat in the day-night match.

The 31-year-old Murali then scored 21 not out and shared an unbroken 52-run stand for the ninth wicket with Zaheer Khan (31 not out) to guide India home with four overs to spare.

Australia won the series 4-2 after the opening match was washed out. India won the fourth game.

Gibbs, de Villiers and Ntini lead S. Africa to victory

LAHORE: Centuries from Herschelle Gibbs and AB de Villiers and a four-wicket burst by Makhaya Ntini led South Africa to a 45-run win over Pakistan in the first one-dayer at Gaddafi Stadium yesterday.

Ntini sliced through the top order with the new ball, taking four for 69 as Pakistan were bowled out for 249 in 46.3 overs in reply to South Africa抯 294 for five.

The paceman struck in his second, third, fourth and sixth overs as the home team stumbled to 55 for four.

Mohammad Yousuf stood firm with 53 before Shahid Afridi belted 47 with five fours and two sixes to lead a late surge.

Afridi put on 43 for the eighth wicket in 25 balls with debutant Sohail Tanvir, who cracked two sixes in his 26.

After Charl Langeveldt removed Misbah-ul-Haq (20), Yousuf and Kamran Akmal (35) put on 60 for the sixth wicket.

Jacques Kallis then struck twice to have Yousuf caught at short mid-wicket by captain Graeme Smith and clean bowling Akmal.

Earlier, Gibbs (102) and de Villiers (103 not out) added 137 for the third wicket after South Africa chose to bat first.

Pakistan beat South Africa

LAHORE: Pakistan overcame a scrappy effort in the fielding yesterday to beat South Africa by 25 runs in the second one-day international to level the five-match series 1-1.

Captain Graeme Smith top-scored with a dogged 65 off 96 balls as South Africa was bowled out for 240 in 49.3 overs after Pakistan made a respectable 265-9 off their 50 overs.

Smith was bowled off a no-ball before he had scored and was thrice dropped before he had completed his half century.

Pakistan survived a late onslaught by Albie Morkel (31), who was also dropped on 20, and Shaun Pollock (37) as Rao Iftikhar ended up with a disciplined career-best figures of 3-43.

Earlier, Yousuf (117) hit nine fours in registering his 13th century in one-day internationals off 143 balls but South Africa did well in the late overs to restrict their opponents.

Yousuf was dismissed in the 48th over when Morkel knocked back his leg stump as he attempted to pull the medium fast bowler.

India thrash Australia by seven wickets

MUMBAI: India justified their tag of world champions with a seven-wicket thrashing of Australia in a one-off Twenty20 international here on Saturday.

Opening batsman Gautam Gambhir top-scored with a 52-ball 63 and helped the hosts overhaul Australia抯 total of 166-5 in 20 overs with 11 balls to spare in the one-sided contest.

Yuvraj Singh, India抯 hero at the World Twenty20 Championship in South Africa last month, chipped in with an unbeaten 31 inclusive of three mighty sixes and one four while Robin Uthappa added a valuable 35.

The Indians, who were barely tested in the game, regaled the boisterous 30,000 crowd with a victory parade reminiscent of the celebrations after their triumphant return from South Africa.

揥e were superb today. We wanted to prove that we are the world champions and we did just that,

South African duo crush Pakistan

MULTAN: Sparkling half centuries from Graeme Smith and Shaun Pollock set South Africa up for a comfortable sevenwicket win over Pakistan in the fourth one-day international to level the series yesterday.

South Africa easily chased down Pakistan's 230 for nine with 74 balls to spare to leave the series tied at 2-2 with the final game to be played in Lahore on Monday.

Pollock, whose 90 was his highest score for South Africa, and Smith, who scored 81, put on a record partnership of 159 from 157 balls for the second wicket, surpassing the 155 by AB de Villiers and Jacques Kallis against Pakistan this year at Johannesburg.

BRIDGETOWN: Jamaica beat Guyana by three wickets in the Caribbean's first competitive day-night cricket match at the picturesque Three Ws Oval just outside Bridgetown on Thursday.
Over 2,000 spectators watched the game in a carnivallike atmosphere, Guyana making 159 for nine from their allotted 43 overs after a damp outfield had delayed the start.

Analyst: Woolmer抯 toxicology test inconclusive

KINGSTON: A Jamaican laboratory worker who analysed toxicology tests on Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer said on Friday that one sample revealed low levels of pesticide in his system, but another showed no sign of the potentially lethal chemical.

The testimony from Marcia Dunbar, an analyst at the National Laboratory, cast doubt on the claim by a government pathologist, Dr. Ere Sheshiah, who said the 58-year-old coach was poisoned and killed by the pesticide cypermethrin.

Woolmer was found unconscious in his Kingston hotel room on March 18, a day after his powerhouse team suffered a humiliating loss to Ireland and was eliminated from the Cricket World Cup.

Four days later, Sheshiah ruled he had been strangled, instigating a homicide investigation and media speculation frenzy.

The police called off their probe in June after foreign pathologists concluded the coach had died from natural causes, most likely heart disease.

During the inquest this week, Sheshiah insisted the burly Woolmer was poisoned and strangled. Other doctors have testified that he misinterpreted his own findings and said his medical techniques did not meet international standards.

Dunbar said she does not have full confidence in the test results that came back in June because the containers may have been mishandled and tainted by foreign substances.

In addition to cypermethrin, she said the tests revealed medications for diabetes and the heart as well as a small amount of alcohol.

The inquest is expected to end on Nov 9, after roughly 50 witnesses appear before the 11-member jury.

South Africa spoil Shoaib抯 return to win one-day series

LAHORE: South Africa spoiled Pakistan paceman Shoaib Akhtar's comeback match yesterday with a stunning 14-run victory in the fifth and final one-day game to clinch the series 3-2.

Pakistan were coasting along well at 199 for four in the 41st over before they lost the last six wickets for 20 runs to get dismissed for 219 in 46.3 overs.

Shoaib took four for 43 to restrict South Africa to 233-9 off 50 overs with Jacques Kallis scoring a fighting 86 and Herschelle Gibbs making a fine 54.

Younis Khan (58) and Mohammad Yousuf (53) shared a valuable 106-run partnership off 134 balls before Pakistan stuttered in their run chase with Albie Morkel grabbing four wickets for 44 and Man-of-the-Match Makhaya Ntini taking 4-61.

Younis and Mohammad departed in the space of 19 deliveries that opened Pakistan's suspected lower order in front of Morkel and Ntini.

Captain Shoaib Malik was clean bowled by Morkel for 23 in the 41st over and Misbah-ul-Haq was brilliantly caught by Jean-Paul Duminy off Ntini.

AB de Villiers took a brilliant running catch to dismiss dangerman Shahid Afridi and Pakistan lost their last two wickets at the very same total of 219 that left around 28,000 home team supporters stunned.

Century stand puts South Africa in control

JOHANNESBURG: Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis shared an unbroken century stand to put South Africa in control of the first Test with a lead of 287 runs against New Zealand on Friday.

South Africa reached the close on 179-2 on the second day of play. Amla, who was dropped on two, was 85 not out with Kallis on 76 in a partnership of 159.

Fast bowler Dale Steyn tilted the match in South Africa's favour when he claimed a career-best 5 for 34 to help dismiss New Zealand for 118 in their first innings, which they scored in reply to hosts' 226.

Steyn's previous best was the 5-47 he took against New Zealand at Centurion in 2005-06.

New Zealand resumed on 41-2, and they were dismissed 21 balls after lunch.

Steyn struck in the fifth over when he bowled nightwatchman Shane Bond for one.

Five overs after that, Stephen Fleming pushed at a delivery from paceman Makhaya Ntini and was caught by AB de Villiers at third slip for 40.

New Zealand lost their next three wickets for five runs and all of the dismissals involved Kallis.

Scott Styris, who scored 11, played an uncertain drive to a Kallis delivery and was caught by Graeme Smith at first slip.

In the next over Kallis was at second slip when he took the catch that enabled Steyn to dismiss Jacob Oram for one.

Kallis struck again in his next over when he had Ross Taylor caught in the gully by Herschelle Gibbs for 15.

Steyn completed his fourth five-wicket haul after lunch when he trapped Brendon McCullum in front for nine before having Chris Martin caught at mid-on by Paul Harris for nought.

South Africa were 20-2 in the eighth over of their second innings after fast bowler Bond had Gibbs caught by Michael Papps at third slip for eight and medium pacer Martin bowled Smith for nine.

Bond would have had two wickets had wicketkeeper McCullum not dropped a catch offered by Amla on two.

Instead, the New Zealanders toiled without reward in the final session as Kallis and Amla built South Africa's lead.
