Muralitharan equals Warne抯 world record

KANDY: Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan (pic) claimed 4-30 to equal Shane Warne's world record for the most Test wickets on the second day of the first Test against England yesterday.

Muralitharan ripped through England's top order after lunch to reduce the tourists to 186 for six shortly before tea when rain washed out play for the day.

Cheered on by home supporters, Muralitharan claimed the four wickets he needed to draw level with the Australian leg spinner on 708 wickets.

Resuming on 49 for one in reply to Sri Lanka's 188, England lost the wickets of Michael Vaughan (37) and Ian Bell (83) during the morning before collapsing in the afternoon.

Muralitharan followed up with the wickets of Pietersen (31) and Ravi Bopara (eight) in the afternoon to equal Warne's record tally.

With England still trailing by two runs, Paul Collingwood was 14 not out and Ryan Sidebottom was on one when the umpires suspended play.

Misbah, Kamran lead Pakistan fightback

KOLKATA: Misbah-ul-Haq and Kamran Akmal scored battling hundreds to steer Pakistan to 358 for six against India on the third day of the second Test yesterday.

Misbah, who struck 108 not out, and keeper-batsman Akmal with 119 shared in a 207-run sixth-wicket stand after the visitors had lost four wickets in the morning session at Eden Gardens.

Harbhajan Singh dismissed opener Salman Butt (42) and Mohammad Yousuf (6) in successive overs to leave Pakistan struggling initially in their reply to the hosts' imposing first-innings total of 616 for five declared.

But Misbah and Akmal helped carry their team to 59 runs short of avoiding the follow-on.

Wins for Kiwis and Windies

CAPE TOWN: New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori acclaimed South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs as the difference between the sides after his brilliant century gave the home team victory in their one-day series on Sunday.

Gibbs scored 119 from 101 balls with 10 fours and seven sixes to give his team a five-wicket win with 28 balls to spare in the third one-day international for a 2-1 series win. South Africa won the Test series 2-0.

Wasim抯 half-century extends India抯 advantage

KOLKATA: Wasim Jaffer struck a half-century to help India stay in control of the second Test after Pakistan's Misbah-ul-Haq had frustrated the hosts with a career-defining 161 not out yesterday.

In-form opener Wasim hit 56 off 75 balls as India reached the close on 141-2 in their second innings on the fourth day, extending their overall lead to 301. Saurav Ganguly and Mahendra Dhoni were unbeaten on 24 and 28 respectively.

Pakistan were bowled out for 456 in their first innings in reply to India's 616-5 declared. Misbah batted for just over nine hours for a memorable maiden Test century to steer the visitors past the follow-on mark with a defiant 91-run stand with Mohammad Sami (38).

Pakistan's overnight seventh-wicket pair of Misbah, on 108, and Mohammad resumed with the score on 358-6 and batted with control on a deteriorating pitch for over three hours before part-time spinner Vangipurappu Laxman broke the stand in his only over.

Sami gave Vangipurappu the charge to be caught at mid-off, triggering a collapse as the last three wickets fell for the addition of just eight runs.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh cleaned up the tail to return his 20th five-wicket haul while skipper Anil Kumble took three.

The hosts lead the three-match series 1-0 after winning the opening test by six wickets in New Delhi.

Sri Lankan spinner shatters Warne抯 world record

KANDY: Spinner Muttiah Muralitharan broke Shane Warne's all-time Test wickets record on the third day of the first Test to pave the way for Sri Lanka to edge into control against England yesterday.

Muralitharan broke the record in the morning as he claimed six for 55 in 35 overs and England were bowled out for 281, securing a valuable 93 first-innings lead in a low-scoring game.

Jumping Jack: Sri Lankan bowler Muttiah Muralitharan celebrates after breaking the world record of 708 wickets during the Test match against England yesterday.

Veteran opener Sanath Jayasuriya, who later announced the match would be his final Test, was out for 78 as the hosts reached 167 for two at stumps to lead by 74 with two days remaining.

Jayasuriya, who hit 10 fours and a six, added 113 for the first wicket with fellow left-hander Michael Vandort, who scored 49 from 143 deliveries before being caught in the slips just before bad light stopped play.

Kumar Sangakkara finished unbeaten on 30 with skipper Mahela Jayawardene yet to get off the mark.

Tied with Warne overnight, Muralitharan was forced to wait until his second spell of the morning before moving off the 708-wicket mark, bowling Paul Collingwood with a delivery from around the wicket that nipped straight on.

England had resumed on 186 for six, trailing Sri Lanka's first innings total by two runs, but repelled Muralitharan and the host's bowlers during the first hour as Collingwood (45) and Ryan Sidebottom (31) added 57 runs for the seventh wicket.

Lasith Malinga picked up the wicket of Sidebottom before Murali brought the house down.

The landmark wicket of Collingwood was greeted with loud firecrackers all around Asgiriya International Stadium and wild celebrations from a full house that included hundreds of children from his old school, his family and closest friends.

揟he England batsmen played well in the morning and it was getting a bit tougher for me as this pitch is getting slower and slower,

Pakistan grab a draw

KOLKATA: Younis Khan stroked a masterful unbeaten century to guide Pakistan to the safety of a draw in the second Test against India yesterday.

The stand-in skipper scored 107 and shared in an unbroken 136-run stand for the fifth wicket with Mohammad Yousuf (44) to help the visitors recover from 78 for four on an absorbing final day.

The visitors finished on 214-4 after being set a challenging target of 345 on a deteriorating Eden Gardens pitch to keep the series alive.

The result means India, who are 1-0 up after winning the opening Test in New Delhi by six wickets, cannot lose the three-match series against their neighbours.

The final Test starts in Bangalore on Saturday.

Younis and Yousuf, the mainstays of Pakistan's batting after Inzamam-ul-Haq retired earlier this year, dug in for 37 overs to thwart India in a display of solid technique and terrific concentration.

Younis 30, faced 182 balls in his 214-minute effort for his 15th century and the fifth against India. The 33-year-old Yousuf faced 110 deliveries.

The hosts had declared their second innings closed on 184-4 after adding 43 runs to their overnight total for the loss of two wickets.

n KANDY: Kumar Sangakkara scored a superb 152 as Sri Lanka set England an improbable 350-run victory target on the fourth day of the first Test yesterday.

Sangakkara, who became the first person to score 150 or more in four successive Tests, powered Sri Lanka to 442-8 declared in their second innings. Sri Lanka resumed the day on 166-2.

England's bid to save the game started badly when Alastair Cook (four) was dismissed in the opening over of the innings, caught at first slip as he edged an outswinger from Chaminda Vaas.

The tourists closed on nine for one, with skipper Michael Vaughan on one and night-watchman James Anderson on four.

Sangakkara, following his first innings 92, dominated with a display that spanned 269 deliveries and included 19 boundaries.

The 30-year-old shared a 122-run partnership with skipper Mahela Jayawardene, who scored a stylish 65 that included nine boundaries.

揑'm pretty happy with my innings and good day for us. We've shown a lot of character,

World Cup win more special, says Muralitharan

KANDY: Test cricket's leading wicket-taker Muttiah Muralitharan said yesterday he rated Sri Lanka's World Cup triumph in 1996 as more memorable than his own individual world record.

The 35-year-old became the most successful bowler in Test history on Monday when he surpassed fellow spin great Shane Warne's record tally of 708 wickets during the first Test against England here.

Even as the entire nation celebrated his feat, Muralitharan said his feat did not rate as high as the win over Australia in the World Cup final in the Pakistani city of Lahore under former captain Arjuna Ranatunga.

揟he record is nothing much compared to the World Cup win,

CRICKET:       Australian captain unfazed about Indian spin

HOBART: Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting yesterday said theIndian team could say what they liked about his bowling line-up butthey would still have difficulty against it.

India arrived in Australia on Tuesday for thefour-Test series with captain Anil Kumble confidently targeting hisopponent's bowling as their weakness following the retirement ofleg-spinner Shane Warne.

But Ponting said left-arm spinner Brad Hogg, who was on Tuesday namedin the squad to replace an injured Stuart MacGill, deserved his placein the side despite only having played four Tests.

"A lot of international players have struggled reading Hoggy in one-day cricket especially," Ponting told reporters.

"He's brought a lot of guys undone with his variations in that form ofthe game and I can't see why it would be any different in Test cricket.
"If they (the Indians) want to go after him then good because that's  probably the best way for us to take wickets as well.

"Hoggy is bowling very well, he's very confident, he's been talking uphow well he's been bowling right through the summer ... he'll do a goodjob."

Cricket Australia has named a 12-man squad, which also includes four fast bowlers, for the First Test which begins on Dec 26.

Officials have said they will decide the playing line-up based onconditions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but Hogg or fast bowlerShaun Tait are considered the most likely contenders to carry thedrinks.

India, who have won just four of 32 Tests played inAustralia, are aiming to become the first team to pull off a seriesvictory Down Under since the West Indies triumphed in 1991-1992.

They will play their one and only practice match against the Victorianstate side in Melbourne beginning today -- something vice-captain MSDhoni said did not give the squad much time to adjust to Australianconditions.

"It's always better to have a few sessions before you go into a big Test  match," he said.

"We really don't have much time, this is the only session we have.

"It's very crucial now, not only for me but all the individuals." -- AFP

2007/12/24Cricket: Indian hurdle in way of Aussies winning march

Rahul Dravid

SYDNEY: Australia are surfing the wave of another long winning run andtargeting their 15th consecutive Test victory - one short of theirrecord - against India in the opening Boxing Day cricket Test.

Sourav Ganguly
Cricket does not get a more grander stage thanthe 100,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing Day on one ofthe biggest days of the Australian sporting calendar.

India go into the MCG showcase on the back of just 48 overs' battingpractice in the rained-out lead-up match against Victoria and will runinto an Australian side determined to set the tone for the four-Testseries from the first ball.

England were smashed by an inningsand 99 runs in last year's Boxing Day Test, South Africa went under by184 runs in the 2005 MCG match and Australia conquered India by ninewickets in the corresponding Boxing Day Test four years ago.

Australia were last beaten at the MCG by England by 12 runs in athriller nine years ago. Australia rarely lose at their home of cricket.
Ricky Ponting's team are in the midst of another triumphantrun with 14 consecutive victories stretching back two years to theirwin over South Africa at the MCG.

Australia are just two wins from equalling their run of 16 under formerskipper Steve Waugh from October 1999 to February 2001.

Australia's last home series loss was 14 years ago to the West Indies2-1 and they have been unbeaten in 26 subsequent home series.

India's challenge cannot be more confronting than it is going into theopening match of their series with the world Test champions.

India have won just four Tests in eight Australian tours, but pushedSteve Waugh's Australians all the way in the drawn 1-1 last series tourhere in 2003-04.

Yet the tourists are upbeat about theirchances on the strength of their impressive recent away record - Testseries victories in the West Indies in 2006 after 35 years and then inEngland in 2007 after 21 years, under Rahul Dravid.

They havethe most experienced middle-order quartet in world cricket with SachinTendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman, weighing inwith 32,610 runs gleaned from a total of 442 Tests and with 87centuries between them.

Ganguly, top-scorer in this month'sseries against Pakistan with 534 runs in three matches, will make his100th Test appearance in Melbourne tomorrow.

"The most important thing is you have to play aggressive cricket against  Australia," Laxman said ahead of the Test opener.

"Whenever we've played aggressive cricket against them, we have done well  ... you have to play to your potential.

"The moment you give them a slight edge, they'll walk over you, so it'simportant you just come out and play your natural game of cricket, likewe do.

"If you've got a lot of self-belief, I think you'll do well in Australia.

"All the batsmen are supposed to get runs, whenever we've done wellabroad, our batting scored huge runs, especially in the first innings,"he said.

Laxman averages 52.04 against Australia, considerably above his career  average of 44.10.

In 16 Tests against the Aussies he has amassed four centuries, including his highest Test score of 281, and one score in the nineties.-AFP

New Zealand build strong lead over Bangladesh

New Zealand were again building a large first innings lead overBangladesh as they went to lunch at 228 for five on the second day ofthe second cricket Test here Sunday.

Fleming, who is looking for a maiden Test century on his home ground, has given up only one chance as he anchored the innings.

But around him, New Zealand lost two unnecessary wickets on the second morning.

MatthewSinclair, who resumed on nine, was dropped twice early in the daybefore being eventually caught behind for 39 after a scratchy innings.

JacobOram only lasted eight balls before he also went in similar fashion, caught by Mushfiqur Rahim off the bowling of Shahadat Hossain for one,but for the third time in the match there were doubts about thedecision.

Television replays showed the ball appeared to clip the pads and not the bat, although umpire Peter Parker thought otherwise.

Onthe first day, Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful and New Zealandopener Matthew Bell were victims of dubious dismissals by umpire NigelLlong.

Television commentators said that Llong later viewed the match video and conceded he had made two errors.

Kiwis on the verge of victory

WELLINGTON: New Zealand's pace bowlers ripped through Bangladesh's top order to leave the visitors staring at almost certain defeat at the close of play on the second day of the second Test yesterday.

The visitors, who began their second innings 250 runs behind New Zealand after dismissing them for 393 earlier in the day at the Basin Reserve, crumbled to 51 for five in their second innings, still 199 runs away from making New Zealand bat again.

Habibul Bashar was on 21, while all rounder Shakib Al Hasan was with him on four.

Bangladesh will be further hampered by the knowledge that recognised opener Tamim Iqbal has a broken thumb after dropping a catch yesterday and may not be able to bat at all in their second innings.

New Zealand won the first Test in Dunedin by nine wickets within three days.
