Cricket: Harbhajan set for India return

Harbhajan, who was relegated to 12th man for the Third Test
against Australia, is likely to be recalled for the Fourth Test.

ADELAIDE: Australia and India are both set to gamble on recalled players in their Fourth and final Test at the Adelaide Oval, starting tomorrow.

Trailing 2-1 but determined to square the series, India seem almost certain to recall spinner Harbhajan Singh after relegating him to 12th man duties for the Third Test at the WACA Ground.

If India win in Adelaide, it will be the first time since the two sides met in 2003-04 that the Australians have failed to win a home series.

Harbhajan was suspended for three Tests following the contentious Second Test in Sydney, but is free to play pending an appeal that appears certain to be heard after the series.

His absence enabled India to play three fast bowlers in Perth and while the move worked as the Indians broke Australia's 16-match winning streak with a 72-run victory, the seamers are less likely to have a major impact here.
India may drop struggling opener Wasim Jaffer and reshuffle their top order, enabling Mahendra Singh Dhoni to bat at six and all-rounder Irfan Pathan at seven, or they could axe a fast bowler.

Either way, Harbhajan is likely to be wanted to partner captain Anil Kumble with the spin duties, despite Virender Sehwag's pivotal cameo with the ball in Perth.

Harbhajan picked up seven wickets in the first two Tests, but significantly established an important ascendancy over Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who has been well off his best form in the series.

Ponting fell to Harbhajan, who has played 62 Tests for 255 wickets, three times in the first two Tests and has been dismissed by the off-spinner eight times in as many Tests.

Australian opener Mike Hussey said on Monday the Australians were unsure which way the Indian selectors would go.

"All their bowlers bowled pretty well," he said of India's attack in Perth.

"If they do decide to leave one of the bowlers out it would be a pretty tough call."

Australia will recall opener Matthew Hayden, who missed the Perth Test due to a hamstring strain. He was missed at the top of the order, and his absence was also felt in the Australian slips cordon, with some crucial catches going to ground.

Hayden has declared himself fit to play and will replace debutant Chris Rogers at the top of the order, but Hussey said the Australians could not expect the big left-hander to be the answer to all their problems.

"If we're pinning our hopes of winning the Test match on Matthew Hayden playing or not, we might be in a bit of trouble," he said.

Probable lineups -- Australia: Ricky Ponting (capt), Matthew Hayden, Phil Jaques, Mike Hussey, Michael Clarke, Andrew Symonds, Adam Gilchrist, Brad Hogg, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Stuart Clark, Shaun Tait (12th man).

India: Anil Kumble (capt), Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, RP Singh, Ishant Sharma, Dinesh Karthik (12th man). -- AFP

Cricket: Shahrukh, Ambani win bids for India's T20 teams

MUMBAI: Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan and industrialist Mukesh Ambani won bids yesterday to own teams in the star-studdded Twenty20 Indian Premier League, organisers said.

Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, film actress Preity Zinta and four companies also earned the right to own franchises for the IPL to be played across India in April-May.

The tournament, featuring eight franchised city-based teams drawn from a star cast of cricket's top players, will be held over 44 days in 12 Indian cities from April 18, Modi said.

Shahrukh will own the Kolkata team for the next 10 years, while Preity got Mohali, Ambani has Mumbai and Mallya heads Bangalore.

Reliance's Ambani paid the highest bid of US$111.9 million (RM366.3 million) to bag the Mumbai team, Mallya secured Bangalore for US$111.6 million (RM365.3million), while Shahrukh got Kolkata for US$75.09 million (RM245.7million).
GMR Holdings paid US$84 million (RM275 million) for Delhi, India Cements secured Chennai for US$91 million (RM298 million), and the Deccan Chronicle newspaper got Hyderabad for US$107.01 million (RM350 million).

Preity bagged Mohali for US$76 million (RM248.7 million) and Emerging Media paid US$67 (RM219.3 million) million for Jaipur.

Each of the franchises will now take part in an auction for players next month.

Test captains Ricky Ponting of Australia, Graeme Smith of South Africa, Daniel Vettori of New Zealand and Shoaib Malik of Pakistan are among the 80 international cricketers contracted for the IPL.

The entire Indian team, which won the inaugural Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa in September, will also play.

The top two sides in the tournament, boasting prize money of US$3 million (RM9.8 million), will qualify for an international Champions Twenty20 League, which will be held at an undecided venue in October. - AFP

Cricket: Spinner cleared for lack of evidence

ADELAIDE: Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was cleared of racially abusing Australia's Andrew Symonds due to lack of evidence, rather than any external pressure, appeals commissioner John Hansen said yesterday.

Harbhajan was cleared by the New Zealand judge at an International Cricket Council appeal hearing on Tuesday, ending weeks of speculation over whether India would cancel their tour if the suspension stood.

The decision was followed by media reports that Cricket Australia and the Board of Cricket Control for India had brokered a deal that would see the charges downgraded.

Hansen downgraded the charge, overturned the suspension and fined Harbhajan 50 per cent of his match fee, but said it was because he could be not be certain that the Indian spinner called Symonds, Australia's only black player, a "big monkey".

Hansen said it was clear that the Australians - Symonds, Michael Clarke and Matthew Hayden - were sure the comment had been made, but said there were complicating factors that cast doubt on their evidence.

The judge noted they could not recall other comments made during the incident, and said the complicating factors of "different languages, accents and cultures" cast great doubt over what transpired, especially with Harbhajan immediately denying the claim to umpire Mark Benson, and gave him little choice but to downgrade the charge.

Hansen pointed out that Symonds had aggressively and unnecessarily instigated the verbal clash with Harbhajan and also questioned the level of offence the Australian took at the alleged comment.

Given the context of the comment, the judge questioned whether it would have been offensive enough to sustain what he viewed as a very serious charge even if the evidence had been more compelling. - AFP

Gibbs hands Pollock perfect farewell present

JOHANNESBURG: Herschelle Gibbs made a dazzling century and ensured a winning farewell for team-mate Shaun Pollock as South Africa chased down a rain-reduced target in the fifth and final one-day international against the West Indies at the Wanderers Stadium on Sunday.

Gibbs (102) and Jacques Kallis (74 not out) shared a 175-run second wicket partnership as South Africa achieved a target of 211 in 31 overs with eight wickets and 13 balls to spare.

It completed a 5-0 series sweep for South Africa.

Pollock was promoted to number four in the batting order and hit the winning runs, finishing with 10 not out.

Two lengthy rain interruptions threatened to put a damper on Pollock's final match before retiring from international cricket.

The West Indies made a challenging total of 295 for seven after being sent in to bat, with Devon Smith hitting 91.

South Africa were 34 for one after eight overs at the second rain break and came back needing another 177 off 23 overs.

Gibbs and Kallis immediately went on the attack, however, adding 91 off the first eight overs after the resumption.

England primed for unsettled New Zealand

AUCKLAND: With New Zealand cricket facing further upheaval England have completed a smooth build up to an international series which starts today with the first of two Twenty20 fixtures.
England were too strong for limited-over strugglers Canterbury in two 50-over matches at the weekend and, importantly, came through the matches injury-free.

New Zealand's lead up to the series has been far less settled.

Star bowler Shane Bond was dumped last week after signing with the rebel Indian Cricket League, then captain Daniel Vettori on Sunday pulled out of the Twenty20 matches because of injury and Scott Styris retired from Test play.

Vettori is also in doubt for the first one-day international.
For England captain Paul Collingwood the news was positive, especially with the form of his players in the warm up matches.

"It's a good start to the tour," he said.

"I think we've got the players here to do well at Twenty20 cricket and it's vital we do so for the one-dayers -- you can do a lot of (psychological) damage."

England and New Zealand play two Twenty20 matches -- in Auckland today and Christchurch on Thursday -- before starting a series of five limited over games in Wellington on Saturday with three full Tests next month.

Against Canterbury, England quickly found their rhythm with all the top order batsmen scoring 40 or more with the exception of wicket-keeper Phil Mustard.

In the second match, opener Alastair Cook cracked an unbeaten 138 off 140 balls and Luke Wright blasted 42 off 15 balls while Collingwood took three for 15 off five overs.

In game one, James Anderson produced figures of five for 47.

"James Anderson is obviously going to be a spearhead," said Peter Fulton.

With several leading players retiring in recent seasons, including Chris Cairns, Nathan Astle and Craig McMillan, New Zealand are looking to this series to gauge where they stand internationally. -- AFP
