CRICKET: College to rekindle love of the game
CRICKET will live again at the Temenggong Ibrahim Teachers Training College (MPTI) in Johor Baru thanks to the International Cricket Council Under-19 World Cup.
The MPTI ground is one of six venues nationwide selected for the three-week tournament which starts on Feb 17 thus putting it on the world map but the management wants to take it a step further.
It now wants to ensure that cricket will be kept alive in the 43-year-old college long after the excitement of the World Cup is over.
Director of the college, Zakaria Abdul Shukor, yesterday spoke of his plan to introduce cricket as part of the college's extra-curricular activity and hopefully things will pick up from there.
"We used to have a team in the Johor Cricket Council League comprising our trainee teachers in the 60s and 70s.
"The MPTI ground hosted teams like India's Hydrebad Blues and the Cambridge and Oxford University teams when they toured Malaysia in the early 70s," said Zakaria after receiving two sets of cricket equipment from Datuk Dr Harjit Singh, president of the Johor Cricket Council.
"And back then we didn't have a natural wicket, but now we have a world-class pitch certified by the ICC.
"We also hosted the 1st Asian Women's Championship in July 2007.
"So the first thing now is to re-introduce cricket to the college.
"Each year there are an estimated 80 new intakes who major in Physical Education and, hopefully, we can form a team, failing which, those with the knowledge of the game can go on to teach cricket in the schools where they will be posted to after they graduate."
The MPTI ground, where a RM40,000 centre-wicket with four batting stripes was laid last year, is one of two venues in Johor Baru where the World Cup matches will be played.
The other is the Johor Cricket Academy ground in Taman Mutiara Rini. |

Build-up to the ICC under-19 World Cup: Pakistan eye historic hat-trick
Pakistan抯 Umar Akmal has amassed 851 runs in first-class matches. |
DEFENDING champions Pakistan face their litmus test in their bid tocomplete a hat-trick of ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup titles.

In the build-up to the tournament, Pakistan have shown they have thetalent, tenacity and firepower to make history in this tournament.
Thisalone is disconcerting news for the 15 teams contesting for the covetedtrophy, including hosts Malaysia who face them in the opening match onFeb 17 at the Johor Cricket Academy.
Pakistan then play NewZealand on Feb 19 and Zimbabwe (Feb 22) at the Maktab PerguruanTemenggong Ibrahim (MPTI) ground respectively.
Pakistan cantake inspiration from their previous encounters with New Zealand in the2004 and 2006 tournaments when they won both games by eight wickets andthen went on to lift the trophy.
Pakistan are a well-balanced all-round side, captained byImad Waseem, a member of their last Under-19 Cricket World Cup-winningside.
Oneof the players to watch out for is Umar Akmal, younger brother ofKamran, the senior team wicketkeeper. The younger Akmal enjoyed anoutstanding season in first-class cricket scoring 851 runs during theseason at an outstanding strike-rate.
On the bowling front, fast bowler Adil Raza is likely to be one of the leading attackers, while Mohammad Rameez can swing the new ball both ways.
Thesquad: Imad Wasim (captain), Umar Amin, Ali Asad, Shahzaib Ahmed Khan,Ahmad Shahzad, Muhammad Amir, Muhammad Azhar Attari, UsmanSalah-ud-Din, Muhammad Junaid Khan, Umair Mir, Umar Akmal, MuhammadRameez, Shaan Khan, Mirza Ahsan, Adil Raza. |

Cricket: Sehwag: Aussies are running scared
MELBOURNE: For the second time in recent weeks, feisty opener VirenderSehwag accused the Australians of running scared of the resurgentIndians.

As he did during the fourth Test in Adelaide, which ended in a draw asAustralia won the series 2-1, Sehwag said the home side were frightenedof losing to the Indians.
The two sides renew their at times hostile rivalry at the MelbourneCricket Ground today in a tri-series one-day international.
Their previous tri-series match was washed out just when it was poisedfor an exciting conclusion, with Australia struggling at 51 for threechasing India抯 194 in Brisbane last Sunday.
Sehwag said hereyesterday that the Australians knew India were the greatest threat totheir undisputed status as the best side in the world, again pointingto his team抯 shock win in the third Test as proof the gap wasnarrowing.
He said the Indians were confident they would have won out inBrisbane if rain had not intervened and were out to make a statement intoday抯 game.
揟hey know India are the only team that can beat them, so we arepreparing hard for that and hopefully we抣l do well, |

Kriket remaja sedia hadapi saingan
