Kriket: Malaysia menang

MALAYSIA mencipta kemenangan pertama pada Kejohanan Kriket Piala Dunia ICC Bawah 19 selepas menewaskan pasukan elit dunia, Zimbabwe semalam.

Skuad negara membenam lawan mereka 194-124 selepas 38.4 over sekali gus menghidupkan peluang untuk merebut tempat terbaik.

"Saya selalu ingatkan pemain supaya kita kena sempurnakan larian jika mahu menang kerana pertemuan dengan New Zealand nanti, keadaan pasti berbeza," katanya.

Pakistan beat South Africa

LAHORE: Pakistan overcame a scrappy effort in the fielding yesterday to beat South Africa by 25 runs in the second one-day international to level the five-match series 1-1.

Captain Graeme Smith top-scored with a dogged 65 off 96 balls as South Africa was bowled out for 240 in 49.3 overs after Pakistan made a respectable 265-9 off their 50 overs.

Smith was bowled off a no-ball before he had scored and was thrice dropped before he had completed his half century.

Pakistan survived a late onslaught by Albie Morkel (31), who was also dropped on 20, and Shaun Pollock (37) as Rao Iftikhar ended up with a disciplined career-best figures of 3-43.

Earlier, Yousuf (117) hit nine fours in registering his 13th century in one-day internationals off 143 balls but South Africa did well in the late overs to restrict their opponents.

Yousuf was dismissed in the 48th over when Morkel knocked back his leg stump as he attempted to pull the medium fast bowler.

South Africa thump title-holders Pakistan in the semis

KUALA LUMPUR: South Africa crushed defending champions Pakistan by 98 runs in a rain-hit semi-final yesterday to set up a clash with India in the Under-19 World Cup final.

Pakistan, set a revised target of 252 in 47 overs in a match spread over two days due to bad weather, were shut out for 153, dashing their hopes of a third successive title.

Off-spinner Mohammad Vallie lifted South Africa home with 4-25 as opener Ahmad Shehzad played a lone hand for Pakistan with a fluent 60 containing six boundaries and a six.

Proteas captain Wayne Parnell and Roy Adams chipped in with two wickets each as Pakistan lost their last eight wickets for 67 runs.

The day-night final will be played at the Kinrara Oval today, with a reserve day set aside in case of bad weather.

The semi-final was carried over to a second day after rain on Friday brought play to an early end with Pakistan on 86-2 from 18.5 overs in reply to South Africa抯 challenging 260-8.

Cricket: New Zealand spoil England's partyHAMILTON: A late two-wicket burst by Chris Martin rocked England's pursuit of New Zealand's first innings 470 after batsmen had dominated the second day of the first cricket Test here yesterday.

A maiden Test century by recalled Ross Taylor, who featured in a seventh-wicket stand of 148 with Daniel Vettori, lifted New Zealand from a middle-order slump to an impressive 470.

At stumps England were 87 for two in reply, after reaching 84 without loss, and still trailing New Zealand by 383 runs.

Taylor and Vettori breezed through the morning session and into the afternoon before Taylor fell for 120 and Vettori for 88 as New Zealand's final four wickets went in the space of 45 runs.

Evidence of the role the placid wicket played in New Zealand's innings was put in context as Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook cruised to 84 without loss before Martin struck twice in seven balls.
Cook was first to fall for 38 when he miscued pulling a short-pitched ball and was caught at square leg by substitute fielder Nick Horsley, then nightwatchman Mathew Hoggard edged Martin to Stephen Fleming at first slip. - AFP
