Snooker: Duo join Keen Hoo in pro dream
31 Dec 2006
Ajitpal Singh

IT looks like cue artist Moh Keen Hoo is not the only one getting a shot at becoming a professional player.

There is a high possibility that Keen Hoo抯 Doha Asian Games teammates Thor Chuan Leong and Lai Chee Wei will be boarding the same flight to Britain to compete in the Challenge Tour which starts in April.

The Challenge Tour is a qualifying tournament for the World Professional League (WPL).

Though Keen Hoo is sure of playing in the tour, Chuan Leong and Chee Wei will only get to go if the Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation (MBSF) manage to secure enough funds.

MBSF secretary Melvin Chia said he has spoken to several parties, including the National Sports Council (NSC) and several other organisations in the Britain to be their sponsors.

MBSF is confident that with the right exposure, Malaysian snooker can rise again as Pakistan, Thailand, Macau and India are still relying on veteran players.

"Keen Hoo, Chuan Leong and Chee Wei have beaten most of the players in Asia, except those from China, and to ensure they become better players, the trio need to play in tougher competition in Europe such as the Challenge Tour."

Keen Hoo has been the most impressive since Sam Chong retired and among his notable achievements was winning the Asian Junior title last year.

In Doha, he and his teammates failed to win a medal but did well to finish fourth in the doubles and team events.

Cue Sport: Ibrahim scales new heights
By : Ajitpal Singh

IBRAHIM Amir (pic) wrote a new chapter in Malaysian pool history when he finished second in the Asian Nine-Ball Tour Singapore-leg at the Orchid Country Club yesterday.

Ibrahim, who failed to advance beyond the group stage in the opening three legs in Jakarta, Kaohsiung and Genting, went down 11-8 to Taiwan抯 No 1 ranked player Yang Ching Shun in yesterday抯 final.

Prior to this, no Malaysian had ever advanced past the quarter-final stage of the Asian Tour since its inception in 2003.

Ibrahim reached the quarter-final of the 2004 and 2005 Asian Tour Taiwan legs.

Yesterday, Ibrahim, who suffers gout to his left leg and was in pian, did not start well, struggling off the break.

Trailing 3-5, the Malaysian clawed back to even the score at 5-5. However, the 29-year-old Ching Shun found his rhythm to take an 8-5 lead before Ibrahim took the next two frames.

ada...kalau opponent boleh break above 30, and then you break max 8, boleh mintak handicap...kau start dengan 20 points...lebih kurang camtu la...
tapi of course takde la handicap card macam golf tu..;)

Sometimes, when we played against good opponent, they only can use red, Pink, brown and green balls to collect points..
Macam-macam boleh...

Indefinite ban on Patrick justified: MSBF

JOHOR BARU: An indefinite suspension on Patrick Ooi is necessary under the circumstances, the Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation (MSBF) said yesterday.

According to the MSBF secretary, Melvin Chia, the action taken by Patrick to quit the Korat SEA Games squad abruptly was totally unacceptable.

揥e just cannot allow any of our athletes to hold us at ransom. Let the indefinite suspension on Patrick serve as a reminder to the rest in the squad that we will not tolerate such behaviour,

Snuker tiada pemain pelapis

CUE SPORTS: Ibrahim, Alan to carry Malaysia's challenge
AJITPAL SINGH

VETERAN Ibrahim Amir and Alan Tan will represent Malaysia in the US$320,000 (RM1.03 million) Asian Nine-Ball Tour's opening leg in Taipei, Taiwan on Feb 28-March 2.

Alan, best known for upsetting three-time world champion Earl Stickland of the United States in last year's World Championships, is replacing season campaigner Patrick Ooi who is currently suspended for pulling out of the Korat Sea Games.

Ibrahim's memorable outing last year was finishing second in the Singapore leg. He finished seventh overall on the leader board.

MSBF secretary Melvin Chia is confident Ibrahim will do better in this year's tour.

"He has been training hard for the past few months and I believe he will make an impact this year," said Melvin yesterday.
Former world champion Ronato Alcano of the Philippines, Taiwan's 2005 world champion Wu Chia Chiang and Chao Fong Pang and last year's World Championships runner-up Roberto Gomez, also of the Philippines, have confirmed their entries.

Malaysia will host the second and third legs in Penang on April 3-6 and Kuala Lumpur (May 29-June 1) respectively.

The other legs will be held in Singapore (July 24-27) and Guangzhou, China (Sept 18-21).

Each leg will involve 24 players divided into eight groups from which the champions will advance to the knockout stage.

The Grand Finals, featuring the top 10 in the standings, will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia on Oct 23-26.
