Bar鏰朚adrid: Summer Signings And The Pendulum Swing

Phil Smith looks at how what has happened over the summer at the Camp Nou and the Bernabeu impacts what we will see over the coming season.

On 17th June as Real Madrid were celebrating their 30th La Liga title at the Plaza de Cibeles, after yet another second half comeback against Mallorca, the mood amongst madridistas was of triumph and optimism.

At the same time, cules were left wondering how a team which dominated Europe the previous season could hand the title over to their eternal rivals so tamely.

Fast forward just six weeks and the momentum has shifted without a ball being kicked. The mood at the Camp Nou has been lifted by quick and impressive forays into the transfer market.

Meanwhile, in the capital, the long running saga of Schuster replacing Capello coupled with the uninspiring signings have left fans frustrated. Despite the strong outward show of optimism, every madridista is just a wee bit worried.

Barcelona On The Money

The arrival of Thierry Henry just over a week after the seasons conclusion brought the feel good factor back to Catalonia as fans were looking ahead to the next season rather than dwelling on the failures of the previous one.

Cules began to look forward to seeing arguably the four greatest attacking talents on earth all in the blaugrana jersey. Yaya Toure soon followed to fill the problem position of the holding midfielder, which Motta and Edmilson had filled the previous season without distinction.

Next on the list of Txiki Beguirist醝n, Barcelona's sporting director, was the defence. Eric Abidal and Gabi Milito have been brought in to give the defence a much more robust look. Abidal's speed and strength should shore up the left hand side of the defence whilst Milito will form one of the toughest centre back pairings in Europe alongside club captain Carles Puyol.

With the defence strengthened, the troublesome defensive midfield area filled and one of the most exciting forward lines ever assembled, Bar鏰 have no need to venture into the transfer market again this summer. however, there could be further signings to cover for any departures.

After Milan's failure to lure either Ronaldinho or Eto'o to the San Siro, they have apparently turned their attention to Bar鏰's midfield, with moves for Deco and Motta being rumoured. Barcelona may also be tempted back into the transfer market if they sense an opportunity that is too good to miss, as in the case of Royston Drenthe.

The  Holland U-21 star is also interesting Chelsea and Real Madrid but has voiced his preference to line up alongside Ronaldinho and co.

Real Madrid Not Completely Reassuring

Real Madrid's activity in the transfer market has been somewhat less successful with Milan, seemingly unwilling to let Kaka leave for any price, and Cesc snubbing a move to the arch rivals of his boyhood club. The signing of Arjen Robben had seemed a done deal but continues to drag, with Mourinho appearing unkeen on letting the Dutchman leave.

Marca, the Madrid based paper, claimed Real were prepared to pay the release clause of Barcelona's Andres Iniesta. However, this seems to be little more than wishful thinking with Ramon Calderon refuting the claims and Iniesta stating his desire to see out his career at Bar鏰.

Real's first signing of the summer was the giant German defender Christoph Metzelder. Whilst being a reliable centre back he wasn't the spectacular signing madridistas had been hoping for, especially after casting an enviable eye over their major rivals buys.

The highly rated centre back Pepe was presented the following day. Whilst the 24 year old was acknowledged as being a promising player, and was rumoured to be interesting Bar鏰, the price paid to Porto, a staggering

Raul And Soldado Strike In Madrid Win

Real Madrid began their pre-season campaign with a solid 2-0 win over a resolute Stoke City side, who refused to be overawed by their rivals, and did ruffle a few feathers in between
.

First Half XI: Dudek - Ramos, Pepe, Metzelder, Torres - Balboa, Diarra, Bueno, Guti, Granero - Ra鷏.

Sergio Ramos had the ball in the back of the net early, with a typical header from a free-kick, but it was ruled out for a foul in the area.

However, Madrid were duly in front in the 19th minute when Raul made the most of a poor clearance following a cross from Granero.

Once in the lead, Guti ran into form, and was running Balboa into space time and again. However, the home defenders were alert, and kept the deficit to a minimum before the break. Stoke City had their own chances, but Madrid were alert at the back, and kept their opponents to speculative efforts.

Schuster changed the entire team at the break (but for the outstanding Pepe), handing Saviola his debut, and bringing on the likes of Soldado, De la Red and Higuain. Adrian got a chance alongside Emerson in midfield, while young goalkeeper Codina also got a run-out.

Second Half XI: Codina - Salgado, Cannavaro, Pepe, Cicinho - Emerson, Adri醤, De la Red, Higua韓 - Saviola, Soldado

It was a solid start to the half from Real Madrid again, though they were put under pressure by their opponents, who had clearly been instructed to get a little physical.

Saviola showed flashes of brilliance, but De la Red, who had been handed Guti's role, was the one who caught the eye. Pepe was solid apart from the one lapse when he was turned inside out, and Soldado always looking dangerous.

Indeed, it was the young striker who scored the all important second goal in the 73rd minute, from the spot after De la Red was brought down in the area.

Madrid controlled the game thereafter, with Stoke City more keen on avoiding a humiliation, and happy to stick to their own gameplan. Though Soldado came close again a few minutes later, it ended 2-0. All in all, a positive start for Los Merengues, even though against very modest opponents.

There were also a few hints as to what formation Schuster might use, though nothing concrete as he tried different things in each half. In the first, Raul was often found on his own up front, with Guti, Balboa and Granero supporting him, while in the second, he had Saviola playing behind Soldado, with Higuain and De la Red for support, the latter running the show from midfield.

hehehehe nampaknyer berbaloi gak real beli pepe and the geng..

Schuster After Friendly Victory: "I Need A Player Like Ballack"

Bernd Schuster presided over his first Real Madrid match today, watching his charges win 2-0 over a dogged Stoke City side. After offering his thoughts on the game, he moved on to discuss possible signing targets...

After seeing his side overcome Stoke City 2-0, Bernd Schuster seemed reasonably happy with his inaugural match in charge of Real Madrid.

The German coach said, "It was a good test. We tried to create chances, we built well from the back, we played good touch football and controlled the game.

"The opposition defended deeply but still tried to create the odd chance. But we didn't concede, and we won. For just six days of training, things went well."

In addition, Schuster discussed possible additions to his team. It's well-known that he is looking for a left sided player - such as Jose Antonio Reyes or Arjen Robben - but he's now added another target to the mix: a midfielder in the Michael Ballack mould.

Following on from earlier speculation regarding a central midfielder like Cesc Fabregas, Schuster turned his attention towards Chelsea's player, Ballack.

Schuster said, "I look for Ballack's type of player. It's necessary to sign players of quality, otherwise it's not worth the trouble."

However, he was cautious in his approach, adding, "We know that players often have big contracts with teams that will compete in the Champions League.and the problem there is that they are not likely to leave.

"I like Ballack, but it doesn't mean we're going to get him."

But it seems inevitable that more signings are to come in the aftermath of this display. Schuster said, "Until the season begins, there is always the possibility of bringing in new players."

Schuster's side will now rest up before the next training session. Their next friendly match is scheduled for 31st July, against Hannover.

Madrid And Arsenal Strike Reyes Deal - Report

Reports coming out of Spain suggest that Real Madrid have agreed a 9.2 million euro deal with Arsenal over the transfer of Jose Antonio Reyes.

The money exchanging hands does come as a surprise, though, given earlier reports that Arsenal have been demanding at least 15 million euros for the player, but the Marca insist this morning that the deal has been struck.

Schuster had indicated immediately after taking charge that he would like Reyes to stay, but Madrid have been struggling to agree a price with the Gunners despite having dished out 30 million for Pepe.

It appears, though, that Arsenal have been the ones to succumb, and have lowered their demands after Lyon withdrew from the race to sign the winger.

The deal is supposed to be completed on Monday or Tuesday, once the last remaining creases are ironed out. The player will sign a four year contract.

The news has not been confirmed yet, but it was reported yesterday that Arsenal had given Reyes a final 48 hours to sort his future out, or prepare to return to London against his wishes.

If true, it is a piece of news that will be welcomed by many Real Madrid fans, and by the player, who played a title winning role in the final La Liga clash last season, heralding a 3-1 comeback win.

"Left-back" Cicinho Revolts Against Schuster, Threatens To Leave

Cicinho has not taken kindly to being palyed out of position, and threatened to leave the club if that continues to be the case.

After only the first match of the season, Bernd Schuster has dissent in his ranks to deal with.

The coach dropped his first hints regarding his plans for the season in yesterday's friendly against Stoke City, and Cicinho feels he is on the wrong end, literally.

While the first half of the 2-0 win saw Sergio Ramos on the right and Miguel Torres on the left, the second was conspicuous for Cicinho finding himself on the left, with Salgado playing in "his" position.

The player has previously dismissed speculation linking him with a move away, particularly to Roma, insisting he wants to stay and prove his worth, but seemed very irked after the game, irked enough to threaten to leave.

"I am not confortable on the left and would like to play in my position," he said on Spanish radio.

"I want to play at right back, and if that is not the case, I will find myself another club, because I do not see myself playing there [on the left] all year."

He insisted that he still wanted to stay at Madrid, but only if he was wanted for what he has to offer. The Brazilian warned that offers from other clubs were most certainly not a problem.

"My desire is to continue here, but only if it makes me happy," he quipped. "I have several offers on the table, and we will see what happens.

"It is certain that there are problems playing on the left, and that Schuster has asked me to paly there. My will is to play in my position."

Whether Dchuster handles this with kid gloves or an iron hand will tell us plenty about what will happen at Madrid over the coming 12 months. What is certain is that the gauntlet has been thrown to his man managing skills.

Real Madrid boss Bernd Schuster has revealed he is interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack.

Schuster is a big admirer of his fellow German and would like to bring him to El Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid have held a long-term interest in Ballack, but lost out to Chelsea last summer for the midfielder's signature.

Ballack endured a difficult first season at Chelsea last term failingto live up to expectations and Jose Mourinho raised doubts over theGerman's future earlier in July by claiming Ballack could notguaranteed a place in his side.

Schuster, who is also chasing Chelsea's Arjen Robben, believes Ballack would be a suitable addition to the Real side.

"With his class, he fits perfectly to Real Madrid," Schuster told German public television station ARD.

"I can very well imagine him playing for my team.

"I thought about Michael before he went to Chelsea.

"He was linked with Real back then, when it was clear [Zinedine] Zidane was leaving.

"He would be the link between midfield and attack and would really be perfect."

Schuster also claimed Chelsea's asking price and Ballack's salary would not be a problem for Real.

It remains to be seen however, whether Chelsea would be willing to letBallack move as they look to assemble a squad capable of wrestling thePremier League crown back from Manchester United next season.
