Old school: Veterans dominate All-Star game

Western Conference 12, Eastern Conference 9

By STEPHEN HAWKINS
AP Sports Writer
January 25, 2007

DALLAS (AP) -- Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin are already thinking about their next All-Star game together. There should be plenty more chances for the young sensations -- and likely soon.

Maybe next time, they won't be overshadowed on the ice.

While Crosby and Ovechkin were the main attractions in the league's first midseason showcase since 2004, the night belonged to one of the NHL's old stars.

Colorado's Joe Sakic, making his 12th All-Star appearance, had four assists to lead the Western Conference to 12-9 victory Wednesday night.

"It was a wide-open game with a lot of goals," said Sakic, who captained the West squad. "I don't know what more you want." More here.

The Stanley Cup

It all started on March 18, 1892, at a dinner of the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association. Lord Kilcoursie, a player on the Ottawa Rebels hockey club from Government House, delivered the following message on behalf of Lord Stanley, the Earl of Preston and Governor General of Canada:

"I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion (of Canada).

"There does not appear to be any such outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the general interest which matches now elicit, and the importance of having the game played fairly and under rules generally recognized, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning team."

Shortly thereafter, Lord Stanley purchased a silver cup measuring 7

Dallas 4, Anaheim 1

February 24, 2007

DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Stars have two hot goaltenders, and they'll need both rookie Mike Smith and starter Marty Turco to stay that way down the stretch if they hope to win a second straight Pacific Division title.

Smith stopped 24 shots, Jussi Jokinen and rookie Krys Barch each had a goal and an assist, and the Stars tightened the division race with a 4-1 victory over the slumping Anaheim Ducks on Friday night.

Dallas is five points behind Pacific-leading Anaheim and two back of second-place San Jose. The Stars trailed the Ducks by 15 points on Jan. 15.

"That was as good a team effort as we've had all year," Smith said. "First place seemed out of reach a couple of months ago. Now it isn't. We want to win the division and this helps."

Smith was in the nets for the fourth time in the last seven games, including three starts. Coach Dave Tippett wants Smith to get more game action down the stretch to keep Turco fresh for the playoffs. Smith, 4-1 over his last five starts with a 1.15 goals-against average, beat the Ducks 1-0 on Feb. 10.

Anaheim 3,  San Jose 1

March 3, 2007

AP - Mar 3, 12:57 am EST

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Rookie Dustin Penner is helping the Anaheim Ducks show the best move they may have made at the trade deadline was a deal they didn't make.

Penner scored his fourth goal in three games and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 30 saves to help lead the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-1 victory Friday over the San Jose Sharks.

Andy McDonald had a pair of assists for Anaheim, setting set up a first-period goal by Chris Kunitz and a third-period insurance goal by Chris Pronger as the first-place Ducks increased their lead over the third-place Sharks to nine points in the Pacific Division.

The Ducks have won five of the seven meetings between the teams thisseason. Anaheim also took a 3-2 win in San Jose on Monday with Penner scoring a pair of goals.

Leading up to Tuesday's trade deadline, Anaheim GM Brian Burke stressed the team would not make any deals that included the team's young forwards.

This time last season, the Edmonton Oilers were in the midst of a dream run that led all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Just one year later, the Oilers must be hoping for an end to their current nightmare.

Edmonton suffered its 16th loss in 17 games on Sunday, falling 2-1 to the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Centre.

Patrick Sharp scored a shorthanded game-winning goal and Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 18 of 19 shots for the Blackhawks' second consecutive victory.

Raffi Torres responded with the lone goal for the Oilers, who dropped their fourth consecutive game overall and seventh straight on the road.

With the win, Chicago improves to 16-20-4 at the United Centre and evened their season series with Edmonton at 2-2.

Since trading franchise player Ryan Smyth at the trade deadline on Feb. 27, the Oilers have been outscored 59-19.

Edmonton gives up early lead

Torres got the Oilers off to a promising start with his goal at the 7:49 mark of the first period.

As Marc-Antoine Pouliot skated into the Chicago zone, he spotted Torres skating hard to the net and quickly snapped a pass to him for the tap-in behind Khabibulin.

Tuomo Ruutu responded for the Blackhawks in the second period while stationed in front of Roloson in the Oilers crease. Ruutu took a pass from Radim Vrbata and chipped in for his 17th goal of the season at the 6:16 mark of the second frame.

The game remained deadlocked until early in the third as Chicago attempted to kill off a penalty to Jason Williams for interference.

Martin Havlat poked the puck from Ales Hemsky in the Blackhawk's zone and began to skate up ice. Havlat then found a streaking Sharp up the middle, who scored top shelf on Roloson for the eventual game-winning goal.
