Taiwan kecewakan China

Rare Honus Wagner 1909 baseball card sold for record $2.8 million

September 6, 2007

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (AP) -- A rare Honus Wagner baseball card has been sold for a record $2.8 million, just over six months after it was bought for a then-record $2.35 million.

Referred to as the "Mona Lisa" of baseball cards, the almost mint-condition collectible -- released in 1909 by the American Tobacco Company -- was sold by Brian Seigel of Las Vegas to an unidentified Southern California collector in February. SCP Auctions was a minority owner, but David Kohler, the company's president and CEO, said that's no longer the case.

Kohler said the new owner wishes to remain a private collector for now, but might identify himself at a later date. The sale was completed last week and announced Thursday.

The T206 baseball card features a youthful Wagner in his Pittsburgh Pirates uniform. At the time of the February sale, it was displayed at a Dodger Stadium news conference.

The legendary T206 Honus Wagner baseball trading card is displayed June 6, 2000 in New York. This finest known example of the famed T206 Honus Wagner baseball card has been sold, a little more than six months after selling for a then-record price of $2.35 million to a California private collector. The auction company, California-based SCP Auctions Inc., has brokered the latest sale to a private collector for a record price of $2.8 million, according to a report, Thursday Sept. 6, 2007.

(AP Photo/Kathy Willens, File)

"This has always been the holy grail, the Mona Lisa of baseball cards," Kohler said.

Adding to its value is that only 50 to 60 Wagner cards are believed to exist, and none of the others in circulation are close to the quality of this one, which has been encased in protective sheeting for decades.

"This is the finest by far per condition," Kohler said.

There are no immediate plans to put the card on display, Kohler said.

"There's a possibility that might happen in the future, we don't know for sure," Kohler said. "It was displayed last month at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland. Next year, it's in Chicago. I'm sure we'll have it on display again. I'm sure the new owner won't have a problem with that."

Seigel, the CEO of an asset management company, paid a record $1.265 million when he bought the card in 2000. Among the previous owners were hockey great Wayne Gretzky and Bruce McNall, former owner of the Los Angeles Kings, who paid $451,000 for it in 1991.

Wagner's card was among the first of hundreds of cards of major league players produced by the American Tobacco Co. and included in packages of cigarettes.

Unlike other players, however, Wagner quickly demanded that his card be withdrawn. Theories vary as to why, with one being that he didn't believe American Tobacco paid him enough.

A non-smoker, the Pittsburgh shortstop was arguably the second-greatest baseball player of his era, behind Ty Cobb. Wagner hit .344 during his rookie year of 1897, and batted over .300 for 17 consecutive seasons, winning eight National League batting titles.

One of the first five players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Wagner retired in 1917 with more hits, runs, RBIs, doubles, triples and steals than any NL player.

Kohler said over 1,200 items are currently up for auction on his company's web site including the balls Barry Bonds hit for his record-tying 755th homer and record-breaking 756th homer last month. Those are up for sale through Sept. 15.

betul. right now, the most expensive player in MLB (major league baseball) is alex rodriguez of the yankees - average annual salary is US$25 mil. rumors said that he'll option out of his current contract at the end of this season, and will probably earn at least US$32 mil a year for next contract. the scary thing about MLB contract is, it's all guaranteed. so, if you have $250 mil, 10 year contract, all of them guaranteed. even though you don't play another AB (at-bat) after the first year, or you get cut by your original team that awards you the contract. basically, your contract will follow you until it expires.

Pirates knock Cubs out of 1st in Central

By ALAN ROBINSON
AP Sports Writer
September 9, 2007

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Perhaps the Chicago Cubs should stop worrying about the Brewers and Cardinals, the teams they're competing with in the NL Central, and become more concerned with the clubs well below them in the standings.

Freddy Sanchez's bases-loaded triple highlighted Pittsburgh's six-run second inning and rookie Nyjer Morgan made an exceptional catch and drove in two runs, allowing the Pirates to knock the Cubs out of the division lead with a 10-5 victory Sunday.

Sanchez, one of the majors' hottest hitters the last six weeks, had four RBIs as the Cubs' fifth loss in seven games and Milwaukee's 10-5 victory in Cincinnati put the Brewers back into the NL Central lead. Chicago had owned or shared first place since Aug. 17.

"Look, this loss here isn't life or death," manager Lou Piniella said. "We're behind, I understand. One game in the standings? If we play well enough, we'll have a chance to get back on top. If we don't, it's not going to matter."

Still, there was a sense of disappointment among the Cubs that they won only once in three games against Pittsburgh, which is two losses away from a 15th consecutive losing season.

"Our goal is to win series. We didn't win this series, so you turn the page," Derrek Lee said. "Every game is urgent right now, it's that time of the year. Every game is huge. ... We need to do a better job of winning series."

Chicago got off to a promising start, taking a 2-0 lead in the second on Jason Kendall's two-run single up the middle against Matt Morris (9-9), who had won only once in 15 starts since June 17.

But Chicago starter Steve Trachsel (0-2) lasted only two innings -- he is 1-6 since June 13 with the Cubs and Orioles -- as the Pirates came back with the pivotal six-run inning keyed by doubles from Adam LaRoche and Jack Wilson and Sanchez's three-run triple. Morgan and Steve Pearce, both of whom made their major league debuts this month, also had run-scoring singles.

"Let's not get too down about this loss. You've still got 20 games to do something," Piniella said.

Chicago has won 10 of its last 15 against the other contenders for the division title, the Brewers and Cardinals. But the Cubs have dropped seven of 12 to both the Pirates and Reds, whom they face a combined nine times in those last 20 game.

Sanchez tried to stretch his triple into an inside-the-park homer in the second, but was thrown out at the plate on shortstop Ryan Theriot's relay throw. Sanchez added a run-scoring grounder during a three-run ninth keyed by pinch-hitter Jose Castillo's two-run double against Kerry Wood.

"I gave it my best shot, but I could feel the wheels starting to come off before I got to third base," Sanchez said. "I've never had an inside-the-park homer and I doubt I ever will. Those are for fast guys."

Morgan, a 27-year-old prospect sidelined for much of this season at Triple-A Indianapolis by a broken thumb, added another RBI single in the fourth against reliever Carmen Pignatiello for his second RBI of the game and third of his career.

Morgan's biggest contribution might have been his excellent catch against Aramis Ramirez to end the Cubs' fourth.

Morgan, playing Ramirez to pull, was shaded toward left field but raced all the way to the gap in right-center to stretch out and make the catch. Ramirez was left shaking his head in frustration, a common sight lately for the Cubs in Pittsburgh.

"It's a play I'm used to doing," Morgan said, though agreed later it wasn't a normal grab. "It was a shot that was in the gap and I expected him to hit it the other way. I just got a good read on it and I had to make a nice play."

The Cubs tried to get back into it on Alfonso Soriano's 24th homer and fourth in four games, a two-run shot off Morris, and Geovany Soto's pinch-hit homer in the seventh. But Piniella was forced to use eight pitchers during a tiring stretch in which the Cubs don't have a day off from Aug. 27 through Sept. 20.

The Cubs were supposed to be off Monday, but will return to Chicago to play a makeup game against St. Louis before going back on the road Tuesday at Houston.

"We've been playing .500 roughly for a month, or a little below," Piniella said. "Sooner or later we've got to do a little better than that."

Morris managed to last six innings despite his poor first, giving up seven hits and four runs.

Notes:
The Pirates remained one loss away from a 15th consecutive non-winning season. ... Cubs RHP Sean Marshall, who has started 18 times this season, pitched in relief for the first time in his career, majors or minors. ... Trachsel is 1-6 since June 13. He may have pitched his way out of the rotation only 10 days after being traded by Baltimore, with Marshall likely to resume starting. ... Wilson had two more hits and is 16-for-26 (.615) in his last seven games. ... Steady rain began falling at midgame but play was never stopped. ... Pirates OF Jason Bay (right knee) will have an MRI exam on Monday. ... Sanchez has 39 RBIs since Aug. 1, the most in the NL.

Report: Orioles OF Gibbons received steroids, HGH

Associated Press
Updated: September 9, 2007, 11:01 PM ET

Link to original article

NEW YORK -- Baltimore Orioles outfielder Jay Gibbons received performance-enhancing steroids and human growth hormone after both substances were banned by baseball, SI.com reported Sunday.
Jay Gibbons

Gibbons is the latest athlete to be linked to the Florida pharmacy under investigation for illegally distributing prescription medications.

Major League Baseball asked Friday to meet with St. Louis' Rick Ankiel and Toronto's Troy Glaus after two reports said they received performance-enhancing drugs from Signature Pharmacy several years ago.
Between October 2003 and July 2005, Gibbons got six shipments of Genotropin (a brand name for synthetic human growth hormone), two shipments of testosterone and two shipments of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), SI.com said, citing a source in Florida with knowledge of a Signature Pharmacy client list.

SI.com said its information dealt only with receipt of the drugs, not use.

Gibbons didn't immediately return a message left on his cell phone by The Associated Press. Messages left with his agent, Sam Levinson, also weren't immediately returned. Orioles spokesman Bill Stetka declined to comment.

Major League Baseball banned testosterone in 2003, the same year the sport began testing for steroids. HGH was barred in January 2005, but Gibbons allegedly received a shipment that July. HCG is not on the list of banned substances, SI.com reported.

Prescriptions that were written in Gibbons' name were sent to a Gilbert, Ariz., address that traces to the Baltimore outfielder, SI.com said.

The substances were obtained through South Beach Rejuvenation Center/Modern Therapy, a Miami Beach clinic, and sent through Signature, SI.com said.

The 30-year-old Gibbons underwent season-ending shoulder surgery last month to repair a torn labrum. The procedure ended his worst year in the majors -- he batted .230 with only six homers and 28 RBIs in 84 games.

He broke into the majors in 2001 with the Orioles after being selected from the Toronto Blue Jays in the winter meeting draft. His best season was in 2003, when he batted .277 with 23 homers and 100 RBIs in 160 games.

But Gibbons has been plagued by injuries ever since. He played in 97 games in 2004, 139 in 2005 and last year he had two stints on the disabled list and played in only 90 games.

The Los Angeles Times reported last October that Gibbons was one of the players a federal agent said was implicated in drug use by former major league pitcher Jason Grimsley.

unless the padres are willing to cough up at least US$32 mil a year, they can forget about A-Rod. some giants fans also want to see A-Rod in SF uniform, but that will take more than 1/3 of annual budget. only the yankees and bosox will be able to afford A-Rod, in my opinion (may be the mets, if they are willing to stretch their payroll a bit).

for me, i don't want the giants to spend that much money on one player, no matter how great he is. we've got one already and that's enough (and we've got nothing to show for it, except for individual achievements). i rather see the giants spend those $30 mil to three good players with big upside - hopefully they can get andrew jones of the braves (i really want miguel cabrera of the marlin and/or carl crawford of the devil rays - not sure if they are available or not). the marlins had less than $40 mil spent on players and they won two world series titles already.

Brewers drop into tie atop NL Central

By ALAN ROBINSON
AP Sports Writer
September 10, 2007

Link to original article

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates are in the middle of the NL Central race despite being two losses from a 15th consecutive losing season. They're not close to first place, but they keep beating the teams fighting for it.

Tony Armas pitched six sharp innings a day after Milwaukee hit six home runs, and Nate McLouth's two-run homer carried Pittsburgh to another home-field victory over the Brewers, 9-0 on Monday night.
Milwaukee's loss, its fourth in five games in Pittsburgh this season, dropped the Brewers back into a first-place tie in the NL Central with the Chicago Cubs, who beat St. Louis 12-3 earlier Monday. The Cubs had fallen a game back by losing two of three in Pittsburgh over the weekend.

Armas and relievers Franquelis Osoria and Romulo Sanchez combined on the four-hitter, blanking a team that broke loose at Cincinnati on Sunday with eight extra-base hits in a 10-5 victory.

"That's how it goes like that," Brewers manager Ned Yost said when asked how his team couldn't advance a runner past second after scoring 10 runs the day before. "He located his pitches very well, changed speeds, kept the ball down and was on the attack early in the count."

Armas (4-5), winless until Aug. 1, allowed three singles in shutting down the Brewers for his fourth victory in five career decisions against them. He has won four of his last six overall after going 0-3 during the first half of the season.

"You're seeing a very confident pitcher right now and a pitcher who's very comfortable with his pitches," Pirates manager Jim Tracy said. "He kept them off stride. They didn't get too many good swings against him."

The Brewers had won eight of 11 but, again, couldn't find a way to win in Pittsburgh -- they have lost 41 of 60 there since PNC Park opened in 2001, even though the Pirates have yet to have a winning season during that time.

Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks, left, looks to first after completing a double play as Pittsburgh Pirates' Jose Bautista slides into second in the second inning of the baseball game in Pittsburgh, Monday, Sept. 10, 2007.

(AP Photo/Keith Srakocic)

There really is a home-field advantage when these teams play. The Brewers are 8-1 at home against the Pirates this season but have lost 13 of their last 17 and four straight in Pittsburgh.

Prince Fielder said the Brewers must learn to win close games, especially on the road, and not count on scoring a lot of runs every day. Milwaukee scored seven or more runs in five of its first eight games this month.

"We've got to bear down and go after guys because sometimes it's going to be like that," Fielder said. "If we're not going to score, sometimes we've at least got to battle to keep it close."

Asked if the Pirates deserve some credit for playing the contenders tough, Fielder said, "Right now, I don't care about credit. We've got to win."

The top three hitters in Milwaukee's lineup went 0-for-12 after getting seven hits and seven RBIs Sunday. Rickie Weeks, J.J. Hardy and Ryan Braun were the top three Sunday, while it was Weeks, Gabe Gross and Braun on Monday.

Carlos Villanueva (7-4), making only his third start this season, shut out Pittsburgh until rookie Nyjer Morgan singled in the fifth and scored on McLouth's 12th homer. McLouth, playing left field because Jason Bay remains out with a sore right knee, had three hits and scored three runs.

Morgan also made his second excellent catch in as many days in center field, leaping high against the wall to grab Fielder's drive to start the seventh. The ball would not have left the park if Morgan hadn't caught it, but Fielder likely would have had a double.

In the sixth, reliever Matt Wise looked to be out of the trouble after loading the bases with one out by getting pinch-hitter Josh Phelps to hit a potential double-play grounder to third. But second baseman Weeks' throw to first eluded Fielder and skipped into the stands on one bounce, with two runs scoring. Phelps was credited with one RBI.

"That's huge right there, we've got to turn that," Yost said. "This time of the year, you've got to turn that."

Pittsburgh added four runs against relievers Brian Shouse and Seth McClung in the seventh on RBI singles by Adam LaRoche and rookie Steve Pearce, Ronny Paulino's run-scoring double and Jack Wilson's sacrifice fly.

Pearce began the season at Class A Lynchburg, but has driven in a combined 116 runs with four teams while advancing through every level of the Pirates' farm system since April. He is hitting .313 with Pittsburgh. Morgan, who missed half the season with a thumb injury, is hitting .257 in 10 games but has been exceptional in the field.

"They're making the statement, `I could have been here sooner,' and from the way they're playing you'd have to say, `You're right,"' Tracy said. "He (Pearce) plays like he belongs in the big leagues. The kid can hit, he knows he can hit and nobody is going to tell him any differently."

Notes:
On Sunday, Morgan ranged from left-center far into the gap in right-center to take a potential extra-base hit away from the Cubs' Aramis Ramirez. That catch came during a 10-5 Pittsburgh victory that helped put the Brewers back into first place. ... Armas struck out three and walked none. ... LaRoche also had three of Pittsburgh's 15 hits. ... Milwaukee is 28-44 on the road.

Froemming Draws Pappas' Ire, 35 Years Later

By Willie Weinbaum
ESPN
Updated: September 14, 2007, 4:43 PM ET

Link to original article

For spans of 34, 24 and 14 years, it never happened.

No one achieved it in the 1970s, 1940s, 1930s, 1910s, 1890s or 1870s.

A perfect game has occurred only 17 times in major league history. Thirty-five Septembers ago, Cubs right-hander Milt Pappas entered the ninth inning against the San Diego Padres needing three straight outs to become just the 10th pitcher to set down all 27 batters in a game.

Pappas, in his 16th and penultimate season, had appeared in three All-Star Games and would retire with 209 wins. But he was best known as the man Baltimore gave up for Cincinnati's Frank Robinson in 1965 to pull off one of the best and most significant trades ever.

On this afternoon, the baseball gods seemed to be with Pappas. Especially in the ninth. Billy Williams' lunging catch in left saved center fielder Bill North, who'd fallen down pursuing what would have been his ball. And when Fred Kendall's wicked shot went foul and the Padres' catcher then grounded to short, Pappas was one out away.

Bruce Froemming, shown in 1973, was a minor league umpire for 13 years before he umpired his first major league game in 1971.

Courtesy of the Baseball Hall of Fame

How good did things look for Pappas to complete the perfect game? Only three times had a pitcher failed to seal the deal when he needed but one more out.

Larry Stahl, a .232 career hitter, stepped to the plate as the only Padre between Pappas and perfection.

The left-handed batter swung and missed at the first pitch.

Legendary Chicago broadcaster Jack Brickhouse set the tense scene for his WGN-TV audience:

"Wrigley Field, Chicago, Sept. 2, 1972. Milt Pappas, two outs in the bottom of the ninth, heading for a perfect game. Cubs ahead eight-to-nothing; Larry Stahl pinch-hitting for the pitcher; strike one the count."

Stahl didn't swing at the next pitch, and umpire Bruce Froemming called it a ball, outside, to even the count.

There was no stalling by Pappas between deliveries.

Milt Pappas was 17-7 with a 2.77 ERA in 1972, the year he came one strike from a perfect game.

Courtesy of the Baseball Hall of Fame

" Pappas fires away. Swing and a miss! Ball one, strike two."

Pappas was just one strike away from immortality.

"Here it comes. Outside! Ball two, strike two."

Pappas and Froemming were both born in 1939; both midwesterners with roots in Europe. The home-plate ump was a Milwaukee native of German origin. The pitcher had entered the world in Detroit, with the unmistakenly Greek surname of " Pappastediodis."

After 13 years of toiling in the minors and nearly two seasons in the majors, Froemming was now one of 14 men on the diamond -- four umpires, nine players, one batter -- who could determine whether Pappas and "perfect" would become synonymous that day, before 12,979 fans at Wrigley Field.

"Here it comes. It's a ball! Ball three, strike two. Low and away that time."

In the most famous of perfect games, Don Larsen's 1956 World Series gem for the Yankees, veteran umpire Babe Pinelli called the 2-2 pitch to the 27th batter in Larsen's favor. Pinelli raised his right hand to ring up Brooklyn's Dale Mitchell, though many saw the climactic pitch as high and outside. Catcher Yogi Berra leaped into the arms of the newly lionized Larsen.

In this case, Froemming's call on 2-2 was a ball.

Catcher Randy Hundley recalls that 2-2 pitch as "a strike, not 'right down Broadway,' but on the outside corner ... a pitcher's pitch." But Hundley didn't dare argue, he says. Earlier in the game, he'd raised Froemming's ire by inadvertently brushing dirt on him when Hundley was really upset at himself for having popped out on an at-bat.

With the count full -- just the second time all game that Pappas got to three balls on a hitter -- Hundley gave the sign for a third straight slider.

"Now here comes one of the most fateful pitches of the year. Ball three, strike two, two outs, perfect game on the line, no-hitter on the line. Watch it. It's a ball. And Pappas is enraged. Ball four. There goes the perfect game. The no-hitter is still intact. Milt Pappas doing a burn."

Focused on what he'd lost, not what he could still achieve -- namely, a no-hitter -- Pappas unleashed a tirade toward Froemming.

After all, Pappas went from the verge of being the only Cub to throw a perfect game to the only pitcher in history to walk a game's 27th batter after retiring the first 26.

Far from subsiding, Pappas' bitterness has been brewing for 35 years.

"I still to this day don't understand what Bruce Froemming was going through in his mind at that time," Pappas says. "Why didn't he throw up that right hand like the umpire did in the perfect game with Don Larsen?"

Pappas says his last three pitches to Stahl, judged by Froemming to be off the outside corner, were all much better than Larsen's historic pitch.

"They were strikes or 'that close' to being strikes that he should've raised his right hand." "I had the opportunity to have a perfect game and unfortunately, Bruce Froemming did not help me at all."

Froemming says his lone concern on the last three pitches was, as always, location, location, location.

"They were off the plate and I don't care if he gets a perfect game or not. I'm an umpire and I have to call a pitch where it is."

But Pappas says the circumstances should have come into play for Froemming, and would have for any other ump.

"It's a home game in Wrigley Field. I'm pitching for the Chicago Cubs. The score is 8-0 in favor of the Cubs. What does he have to lose by not calling the last pitch a strike to call a perfect game?"

"If it's a blatant pitch that anybody can see it's a ball, then he should've called it a ball. But it wasn't."

Froemming says he knew that Pappas had a no-hitter, but didn't realize at the time that a perfect game was on the line. "I didn't know if anyone was on base or not. You don't pay any attention to that."

"How can you not realize," Pappas asks rhetorically, "when no one's gone to your right to touch first base? So I don't buy that." More here.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Barry Bonds' record-breaking 756th home run ball was auctioned Saturday for $752,467, well more than the estimates by memorabilia experts.

Home run No. 755, the ball that tied the record, went for $186,750, according to Sotheby's/SCP Auctions. Both final prices included the winning bid plus a 20 percent buyer's fee, according to the auction houses handling the sale.

Bonds broke Aaron's record of 755 with a shot into the right-center field seats on Aug. 7 off of Washington Nationals pitcher Mike Bacsik in San Francisco.

Electronic bidding on Barry Bonds' 755th and 756th home-run balls is set to enter the final round Saturday Sept. 14, 2007. Experts predict the ball that tied Hank Aaron's home-run record will fetch about $200,000 and the record-breaker will be sold for least $500,000.

Matt Murphy, a 21-year-old student and construction supervisor from New York, emerged from a scuffle with the record-breaking ball after paying $100 for a $12 ticket during a layover on his way to Australia from his hometown.

"I had hoped to keep the ball, but when I determined that was not the best strategy at this stage of my life, this definitely was the right decision," Murphy said in a statement released after the sale. "It is an honor to be a part of baseball history and I wish the new owner well with whatever they elect to do with the ball."

Experts had predicted the ball that tied Hank Aaron's home run record would fetch about $200,000, and that the record-breaker would be sold for least $500,000.

"I feel like I did the right thing with it," said Adam Hughes, 34, a plumber from La Jolla who came up with No. 755 in the left-center field seats in San Diego on Aug. 4.

Hughes said that after taxes and auction house fees, he expects to take home about $90,000 from the sale. He said he would probably invest some of the money and use some of it to help out a cousin who just started college. He might also go on a cruise, he said.

Both buyers did not want to be identified, said a spokesman for SCP Auctions.

While the price for No. 756 exceeded expectations, the ball did not come close to the $3 million that was paid for St. Louis Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire's single-season home run record ball in 1998.

Most memorabilia experts believe Bonds' last career home run, which will set the new record, will garner more than $1 million.
