Gymnastics: Durratun set to explode
10 Jan 2007

RHYTHMIC gymnast Durratun Nashihin Rosli is ready to spring back into action in 2007 after being sidelined by a recurring shoulder injury for most of 2006.

The 18-year-old抯 quest for glory was derailed after her impressive four-silver medal win at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games last March.

She injured her shoulder in April during training and she had to skip the Doha Asian Games and other competitions throughout the year, including the Asian Championships in Surat, India, in October.

However, the Sea Games gold medallistis now ready to make a comeback in her glory quest.

"I have recovered from my injury and have increased my training hours lately. Once the new year begins, I will resume my intensive training sessions and I should be back on track very soon.

"Apart from the Sea Games in Korat, I will prepare for the World Championships,"said Durratun.

MGF biar Shu Wai pilih

揝emua tempat latihan mempunyai kelebihan tersendiri.

Kami hanya menanti keputusannya,

Gymnastics: Shu Wai wants personal coach
24 Jan 2007
Ranjini Thangaraju

TOP male artistic gymnast Ng Shu Wai has handed in his request for a personal coach of his choice to the National Sports Council (NSC).

The decision to submit the request was made after Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said抯 announcement last week that the national sport associations are responsible for informing the athletes on the status of their contracts.

The NSC, however, will only offer athletes and coaches new contracts once the restructuring of the council takes place in March.

Shu Wai has identified Chinese Guo Qing, who is currently based in Vancouver, Canada, as the one to boost his preparation for the World Championships in Germany this September.

The world meet also acts as the qualifiers for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

However, the 20 year-old said that he would like Guo to come to Kuala Lumpur, as he (Shu Wai) does not mind being based at home.

"Yes, I submitted a proposal for a personal coach, and I have recommended Guo as I抦 comfortable working with him based on my experience when I was in (Guongzou) China," said Shu Wai.

"We have a good working relationship and he knows me very well. But I have asked to bring Guo to Kuala Lumpur. It is not true that I want to be based in Vancouver. I don抰 mind being at home as long as I have a good coach," said Shu Wai.

Guo is credited for Shu Wai抯 success at the 2005 Manila Sea Games.

According to the Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF), Shu Wai was offered three training options

Shu Wai selesa berlatih bersama rakan sepasukan

揝aya senang dan selesa berlatih bersama Guo menjelang Sukan Sea Manila lalu dan dia amat memahami rentak saya.

Ferrari gives polished display for gold

AMSTERDAM: Italy抯 Vanessa Ferrari gave a thrilling display on the floor on Sunday to clinch a second gold at the European Championships, fighting back from a poor showing on the beam and asymmetric bars.

After securing the all-round title on Saturday, 16-year-old Ferrari struggled early on, falling from the asymmetric bars at the start of her routine, then slipping from the balance beam and dismounting with a tumble to finish last of the 8 finalists.

But she returned to form for the last women's final of the day, knocking Britain抯 Beth Tweddle from first place. Her fellow Italian Carlotta Giovannini took the vault gold.

Gymnasts from Russia and Ukraine also dominated at the European Championships. Russian Anton Golotsutskov produced two perfectly executed vaults to snatch the title and Russia抯 Yulia Lozhecko saw off competition from Romania抯 Sandra Izbasa, who won silver in the all-round title, to clinch gold on the beam.

Gymnastics/World Championships: China, Japan battle for lead

STUTTGART: Fabian Hambuechen powered hosts Germany into the bronze medal position behind China and Japan after the second day of team qualifying at the gymnastics World Championships on Tuesday.

Champions China held their overnight lead, 374.275, ahead of Olympic titleholders Japan, 370.725, with Germany third on 364.350, just marginally ahead of the United States, 364.000.

China抯 Yang Wei leads the all-around (93.925), qualifying 0.300 ahead of Hiroyuki Tomita, the man whose title he took last year, and Tomita抯 Japanese teammate Hisashi Mizutori, the 2005 runner-up, for tomorrow抯 final.

The 19-year-old Hambuechen, last year抯 bronze medallist, pulled out a strong overall performance, particularly on the high bar on which he scored highest, to sit fourth, with 1.550 separating him from Yang.

But US coach Ron Brant warned that his side could not be ruled out in the team event as they try to restore pride after falling to just 13th place at last year抯 Worlds.

"When you抮e replacing a medal-winning team questions are always going to be there," he said of the team which replaced the 2004 Olympic silver medallists.

"I抳e been hearing it for a year 抜s this team good enough?

Former gymnast files complaint with ACA
By SIM LEOI LEOI

PUTRAJAYA: Former national gymnast Yap Yee Yin, who continued to receive money after her coaching contract expired, lodged a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) here Friday.

Yap arrived at the headquarters at around 11am in the company of Movement for Democracy and Anti Corruption (Gerak) programme director Abdul Ghani Haroon and spent more than an hour being interviewed by the agency officers.

"I spoke to an officer from the investigation unit and I have already handed over all evidence to her, including the names of high-ranking officials at the National Sports Council who had spoken to me previously.

"The officer promised to keep me updated on the progress of the investigation," she told reporters at the ACA office here Friday.

Yap, who now helps out at her father's business, claimed to have received monthly payments of RM1,300 at the end of her contract period. The payments were banked into her account.

She had worked as a coach for the national artistic gymnastics team from 2004 to 2005 and was supposed to be paid RM1,000 a month during this time.

World title won抰 guarantee places in China抯 Olympic squad

STUTTGART: China's men's gymnastics team have been warned that their gold-winning performances here at the world championships do not guarantee places in the squad for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

China on Thursday produced a dominant display across four of the six apparatus to claim their eighth world title in the men's team event, leaving Olympic champions Japan down in second place.

Despite their success China's men's team coach Bai Yuanshao said the six-man team will be required to continue proving their worth over the next few months.

揥e will have to think about it because we have a lot of great gymnasts in China,

Yang retains title

STUTTGART: China's Yang Wei retained his all-round title at the World Gymnastics Championships on Friday and 15-year-old American Shawn Johnson charmed the judges to win the women's event.

Yang had built up such a big lead that when he flew off the horizontal bar on his final apparatus he still managed to notch a total of 93.675, 1.475 ahead of second-placed Fabian Hambuechen of Germany. Japan's Hisashi Mizutori took the bronze.

Competition was closer in the women's event where Johnson had been lying second before the final apparatus. She took to the floor with a big smile and leapt, twisted and tumbled impishly to earn the biggest cheer and the highest score.

China抯 medal collection grows with three more golds

STUTTGART: China picked up three more gold medals at the world gymnastics championships on Saturday to underline their supremacy before hosting next year's Olympic Games.

Cheng Fei won her third successive vault title, Xiao Qin out-swung his opponents to retain his pommel horse title and Chen Yibing's strength allowed him to keep hold of his rings crown. He picked up the highest score of the day, 16.700.

Russia finally had a good day at these championships when 14-year-old Ksenia Semenova upset the favourites to grab gold on the asymmetric bars with a score of 16.350.

Brazil's Diego Hypolito tumbled his way to the top of the podium with an exciting mix of somersaults and balancing acts on the floor exercise. His exhibition earned him 16.150.

All-round champion Yang Wei failed to pick up any more medals, but his team-mates' successes took China's total at these championships to five golds, one silver and one bronze.

Last year they won a record eight golds and the Asian nation could equal that feat as they feature in three of the five apparatus finals on Sunday.

Semenova was glad to make amends for Russia's awful experience in the women's team final where a vaulting nightmare cost them a bronze medal that they had comfortably in their sights. They eventually finished eighth.

揟here hasn't been a single other medal for Russia. I tried to at least get one,

Better co-ordination needed to stop the gymnasts from quitting
COMMENT
By RAJES PAUL

GYMNASTICS is all about grace and co-ordination. But you抎 be hard-pressed to believe that, given what has been happening in Malaysia.

Top men抯 artistic gymnast Ng Shu Wai and younger brother Shu Mun went missing from the training camp. Both have been dropped from the elite programme.

Then, Yap Yee Yin, a former national gymnast and coach from 2004-2005, lodged a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) over the RM18,200 salary overpaid to her. But she did not return the money to the National Sports Council (NSC). She says she does not trust anyone.

And injury-plagued Durratun Nashihin Rosli, after speculations over her status as a national gymnast, quit the sport to focus on academic excellence. She could have at least waited until the SEA Games, which will be held in Korat in December.

Is something wrong with the Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF)? Why are their gymnasts a troubled lot? And why are they dropping off, rather than seek help from the MGF.

The MGF, however, say that the NSC handle all the affairs of the elite programme except for the selection of gymnasts for major championships. The NSC take care of the coaches, programmes, local and international championships, allowances and welfare.

And as far as MGF president Datuk Dr Zakaria Ahmad is concerned, Yee Yin抯 issue is not the MGF抯 problem. It is between her and her employers, the NSC.

And Durratun? According to Zakaria, it was her personal choice to leave.

揑 will not agree that there are big problems in the MGF,
